Top 10 All Time Richest Figure Skaters in the World

No one ever "discloses" their earnings. All these lists are just conjectures based on a person's public activities (ie. endorsements, broadcast appearances, etc).

Exactly, which makes it impossible to calculate Mao's earnings, she has more than 5 endorsements, but we don't know how much her federation takes from her earnings. How does she get pay from her show.

Honestly most of these are speculation, just be happy that your favourite skater is on this list and have earned a decent living for themselves =)

I can't say that Yuna is the poorest because I really don't know any of their early history very well but she certainly came from the poorest federation

Same goes for every other skater on this list lol. Although, I don't think the federation has any legal rights to her earnings from endorsements? Her management(?) might.

True. The Korea fed only have legal rights in athlete's prize money, nothing else. That maybe one of the reason Yuna usually donate all her prize

Japan fed support their skaters since begining so they may take a bigger part though. Maybe ice show or endorsements for their skating community.

Well it has been widely reported that the JSF takes a big chunk from their skaters endorsements, Mao is their biggest earner, the one with her face everywhere, so who knows how much take from her. Lets just say Mao Asada is a cash cow for the JSF.

Hey.. that's their bank account not mine. Good for them, but I just wanted to point that this list is not reliable. At least, FORBES has a better idea because they use information from industry insiders. So, when they say Yuna is the richest figure skater, I believe it because they might have an idea of how much she gets from her many endorsements.

This also comes back to that notion that Korea is very fond of entertainment, pop culture, celebrities make money a lot from entertainment and figure skating superstar in their country like Yuna is no exception to that.

Mao on the other hand had always kept her profile low and her personal life private which is humbling considering her stature.

If you adjust for inflation etc. I would bet the real prizewinner would be Sonja Henie, who was also, I believe, notoriously cheap. C'est la vie. :(

Sonja would win hands down. Sonja was cheap in some ways (she wasn't a tipper for example), but she was very generous with those who worked with her in her shows and movies down to bit players, chorus boys , etc.

Re list, Orman recently said that to be considered rich today, you need to be worth 4 or 5 million.

Recently, Johnny asked the judge in his divorce case to allow him to sell certain personal items, among them an expensive replica of a Faberge egg, to meet his legal expenses, so I am somewhat surprised he is worth as much as the article says.

You said it as if Japan is any different. Japan entertainment market is more bigger than Korea after all.

And what does their profile or private life had anything to do with their income? It's not like Yuna rich because she sell her private life to media gossip or always attend as many event as she can to keep her name up.

Mao is not as rich as Yuna not because she is humble or anything, just because she is one of many Japan sport superstars, she has to share her spotlight with many. Yuna is the only one in Korea so she takes all the glory. Simple as that.

Umm...I'm pretty sure Yuna did that as well. Come on, Yuna was being followed by k-paparazzi in the 2013-2014 season. They didn't just publish her sightings right away b/c they know that they would get hate from the public for negatively affecting Yuna's training period. Hence, they all announced that bf thing after the Olympics.

but I digress, why do need to add in and compare their humbleness and whatevs? I think everyone wants to keep their personal life private.

edit: got carried away... sorry. but anyway, highly agreeing with wanpe's post

That is true and we should all leave it here.

I hope every skater gets enough attention and support from public. I don't want to see them suffering from financial problems.

I so agree with you....

Mao does not have to share her spotlight with NO ONE. She is the face of figure skating in Japan. According to the annual list of athletes Mao is the top athlete of Japan, not just figure skating.

Daisuke, Hanyu, Arakawa, Miki, they are NO ONE for you? She is the top but not the only one.

And yes, both Mao and Yuna fame are not within skating category, Mao is the top athlete, Yuna is the top figure (above most of politician, businessman, entertainment star in Korea). Thanks for clarify.

I remember reading that Michelle Kwan was getting at least $10 million dollars per year in endorsements (especially in the '90s). That doesn't seem to jibe with this list.

Don't go there with me because I never compared Mao's earning with anyone in this thread. It is not my business how much an athlete makes. Just pointing out this list is not reliable. For me not everything is Mao against someone:biggrin:

He was already under a top coach Alexei Mishin at the age of 11, so I doubt he suffered from any poor training stuffs in his competitive career.

Among all the top skater, Yuna obviously came from the poorest supporting FS country, it's so easy to see she struggled the most as well as had all the disadvantage than her competitors. As rich as now, she still have to practice at the old, damaged ice rink, share with all kind of athletes. What's your argument here?

No. Sorry, but Karne is absolute right, you have less informations. Plushenko has been living all alone in a social apartment in St. Petersburg when he was 11 years old. He moved to that city, because the ice rink closed in Volgograd and he wanted to train with Mishin. The neighbor was an alcoholic man. He often went hungry to train. When his mother moved to him from Volgograd she had no job. They collected bottles thus they could buy foods..

So if you don't know what is the poverty look at these videos. :)
