Something to keep in mind regarding switching to a 2 lutz program. I agree that this should be her strategy in the future and maybe RN but I don't see how she could have done this at GPF. The way she approaches each jump is well thought out and with purpose. Each transition is designed's so that she enters the jump on a correct turn and edge. If she would have switched one of the 3f's to a 3z she would have had to rearrange her choreo to adjust to it and not change the timing up for the rest of the program. For an example of this examine her SP where she did a 3t-3t vs this one where she did 3z-3t. After her opening sequence she veers left at GPF when in every other SP this year she veered to the right to approach her 3t-3t. This makes sense to me why she couldn't change it up. I bet if she goes for two 3z's we will notice the choreo alter and I wouldn't be surprised if it is the final jump just in case she needs to add a 2t or 3t it won't be something she needs to worry about in the event of a failed combo earlier.

Even when she is defeated she radiates more than I ever could. I think when she salutes the audience it is so warm and heartfelt. Even when she dominated she always bowed her head genuinely to the crowd. She isn't a look at how beautiful I am type of skater but instead...look at how beautiful this monent is type of skater. I am still so jealous of this girl

The audience applauded everything in the program, success and failure. She genuinely appreciates this constancy of suppport. That explains the warmth of her bow even though inside she was feeling quite different. She really appreciates people like you who stand by her and admire her no matter what happens on the ice.

By the way, I would like to add one thing that I already wrote on ladies topic.

Flip jumps not working apart, obviously she faced the flip with fear, kudos to her for trying again the flip after the one she popped, just as she did with the second axel in combination and nailed it.
I'd rather see her fall than not try.
I actually like this performance. I know she doesn't but this was no way a China.
She didn't let go, she fought as much as she could.

Yes, totally agree. It's the daring mood that should be encouraged. Go for it, don't hesitate, risk it and you will become much better. This performance is much better than CọC.

Absolutely. What about that second axel in combo. That was a great recovery and quick thinking on her feet. That is why I do not agree, at all, with those who are saying she let it go and had a meltdown. The flip was the fear, I'm 100% convinced.
As Simon from Eurosport mentioned, she's overthinking herself.
She should just learn to let the judging out of her mind when she decides to do certain jumps and start skating. Just go for it. If it comes out good fine, if not next time.

What an eventful day! I was so bummed that I could not watch her performance live because of doing community service all day. Immediately after finishing, I checked Instagram and see the picture she posted. Right away I thought, "She must have been in a good mood if she posted! She probably won (not knowing what the caption was saying)!" Then I looked up the results and realized what her post was saying. When i got home, I was nervous to watch what had occurred. I finally mustered up the courage to watch. I was actually glad I was unable to watch it live because I would have been (figuratively) crying along with her. I always get sad when any skater feels disappointed, especially with Anna today. But after this weekend, there are takeaways I would like to note:
1) She's happy. Her fist-pump after her short program proves that she still has that drive. That was an awesome sight to see!
2) She's determined. I might be wrong, but I think she added elements to both programs that were a little more difficult. She knew that's what it took to beat her compatriots.
3) Her R&J program has the potential. IMO, if she executed everything cleanly, it would have been her best program of the year (obviously, since she has not skated it cleanly yet) and arguably, of the night. Unfortunately there's nothing that could happen now.
I know this post sounds kind of redundant. But I want to emphasize that her season is not over. So what if she has not had a clean free skate yet? There's a first time for everything. It could come in a couple of weeks at Nationals, and could put her on the team for Worlds. It wasn't the GPF she was hoping for, but if there's one thing for sure, she will show up at Nationals determined and passionate.

I find the ignore button refreshing. I never used before because I don't like it, but it's a must in some cases.

Wow I was expecting a disaster of some impossibly great magnitude, reading all the comments on the GPF thread...but after watching the performance I actually liked it better than her cleaner one in France...

First of all, the costume looks more finished this time...more complete. I don't agree with the color scheme but it's somewhat less drab than the prior version. Opening combo was also good. She seemed to take defeat better this time, and I hope that mentality carries through for the rest of the year (I hope it's not just because this competition isn't that important to her). But most importantly, she just seemed so connected with the program. I just couldn't see the potential in this program before today....she just never seemed to be engaged with the whole thing. That was the only thing that for me was missing, other than the obvious technical perfection we've come to expect from her. Today I really believed in the whole program and I know it will just be flawless when she gets it exactly right. Her movements today were just really beautiful and her musicality was much improved. And while I never understood the whole "emotionless robot" criticisms Yulia gets (seriously, emotion has a greater range beyond just the look-im-in-pain-on-my-deathbed, and the Victoria-secret-smile-n-wave faces ), I do often wish she would demonstrate more expression in her face...and today she really made a commendable effort to do so. Of course, she's not Sasha Cohen just yet but I'm glad to see her really emote to the beautiful music she skates to.

Yulia is a smart girl and I'm sure she's still overthinking a lot of things in this difficult adjustment period. Perhaps trying to improve her expressiveness...in addition to dealing with the boot issues, last minute program planning, pressure from her rivals, the China disaster, and all that Sochi fame simply affected her focus here. It's actually great for these problems to be coming up for her now, because she is young and she needs all of these "failures" so she can understand how best to cope with such obstacles. In any case, I don't think she's one to count out though. The competition within Russia is downright scary but Yulia has a warrior's spirit inside her...and in some ways, loosing a few battles here and there might be the best thing that can happen to her right now. The pressure to be No. 1 all the time can leave her alone for a bit so she can really look at her flaws (yes, of course she has flaws too!) and work on them. And for sure, you know that killer competitive spirt will just build and build with each "disappointment" until she will inevitably want to go out there and kick some serious butt again.

I have a friend who is a really good spinner and she is attempting to learn this flying entry. It is very difficult to master. It's similar to Kung-fu or so says her coach.

Real quick, I mentioned this elsewhere, but the butterfly spin flying entrance is similar to the butterfly kick from martial arts:

Compare her air position with the guy's position at 1:29 in the video. If you take a picture at the right moment, the body should be horizontal with the hands and feet splayed out, resembling a butterfly.

My pipe dream is to one day do the variant shown later in the video, the butterfly twist, on the ice. At one point I could do it on the ground. Of course, if I want to do it on the ice, I have to 1) be able to do it on the ground again 2) be able to do flying spins 3) be not scared of injuring myself, so it ain't happening any time soon. I'm sure quite a few skaters have the height and could do it if they want, but I imagine there's probably something against the rules about it (such as because the back is facing the ice, i.e. illegal in the same way that a back flip is illegal). It would be more interesting than the regular butterfly spin.

The twist reminds me of a rodeo flip on rollerblades or snowboarding both of which have given me some nice hip bruises in my failed attempts

My friend is able to do it off of the ice but she is a bit timid on the ice with it and doesn't trust it yet enough to do it right. It's amazing the various forms of off ice training that skaters borrow from.
