Russia has always used Euros as an additional qualifier for worlds. In 2010/11, R/T beat I/K at Nationals, B/S, R/T & I/K went to Euros, I/K finished higher than R/T and got the 2nd spot at Worlds. Similar situation for Kovtun getting the Worlds spot in 2013 - he was 5th at Nats but the highest finisher at Euros, & the federation is currently taking a similar approach to Adelina's case for B/S, and they really aren't guaranteeing her a place if she's not ready - all the statements are if she's fit, if the other girls don't do well at Nationals, if when we see her in early January we're convinced she's got a good technical level back. In any case, it makes sense to me for a country with such depth as Russia to spread around the assignments to the major championships.
