State of Russian Ladies in skating: 2014-15 Season

I'm more worried about skaters as ordinary citzens. With exception of a few top athletes, I suppose the marjority of skaters are middle-class and have an important role on supporting their families financially.

And a lot of the skaters get stipends and housing from the government.

It's no longer the Olympic season so thinking you're going to see those magic numbers we all saw in Sochi is deluding yourself. Radionova and Tuktamysheva, this season, have both beaten Adelinas overall scores outside of the boosted Olympic event and with much higher consistency.

She will be scored relative to her competitors, which is always how it goes. Her jumps are bigger and her entrances are difficult enough that she will get the most jump GOE if she's clean. Her spins are difficult and executed relatively well enough to get high GOE as well. She could lose to the others on TES if she makes errors but, even with no inflation, she could surpass a score of 210 (70 SP, 140 LP) if she delivers her elements clean. I don't think any of the other skaters can.

I think she popped only one jump, right?

From memory in the lp she popped the 1st axel so no 2a/3t (but she did a 3t/3t so it would have been invalid anyway), no 3f/2t/2l (only 3f/2t). That's hardly skipping 1/2 the jumps. I would have to go back to watch cause I think she still did 6 triples :confused2:

Yeah she did 6 triples, put the 2t in combo with the 3s (intended to be put on the 2a) so 3 combos, however no 3 jump combo. Just that 1 pop on the 2a and the stepout on the 3f/2t. That's hardly skipping 1/2 the jumps :rolleye:. Now her spins (layback) and steps could have been higher levels but whatever :p.

Short program no 3/3 (probably b/c she stepped out of the toe) and some of the non jump elements could have been at a higher level but still good for somebody who was injured.

With Adelina's inconsistency and the fact that she was in New York for a Nike photoshoot a few days prior (no practice for a week) I was expecting worse.

Machiavellian rationale? What has Wagner won? Two bronze medals in Grand Prix finals? What has Linitskaya won? Silver Grad Prix final medal, gold Europen champuon's medal, gold Olympic medal, silver World's medal. She beat Wagner ll the time except one unfortunate time.

I am pretty sure that everbody should get his/her spot on the team theough competition rather than politics and connections.
I'm a fan of Yulia, but she hasn't skated a good FS all season. If she does badly at Nationals, I think it's reasonable to give Adelina the chance to compete at Europeans.

You're right, spots should be earned... and fortunately for Adelina (unfortunately for Yulia/Anna), only two Russian girls have thus far earned their spots.

Not really - Adelina's lights-out skates at the Olympics isn't something she has done consistently; coming off an injury, things like jumps, her strong point over her Russian counterparts, are likely to be unsteady. It would make more sense to send Anna or at least Alena.

If any one of Julia/Anna/Alena skate really well at Nationals, I'd be annoyed if Adelina stole their spot to Euros. They have all been competing this season and have skated some good programs.

I *think* if Yulia is 3rd highest finisher at Nationals of the age-eligible skaters, that the Fed wouldn't send Adelina over her - Yulia is very popular and it would be bad PR.... especially considering that Yulia is the defending European Champ.

Let me rephrase that: If Yulia and Anna both do badly at Nationals, I think it's reasonable to give Adelina the Europeans spot, assuming she gets in shape in time. I only mentioned Yulia because the poster I was addressing seemed to be mainly concerned about her.

In fact, at this point in the season, I'd say Anna has a stronger case than Yulia: She won one of her GPs, with two near-clean performances, and she beat Yulia at GPF. Yulia hasn't delivered a good LP so far, so she'll need a decent Nationals.

I'm not sure how Alena fits into this. She hasn't delivered a good LP either, and didn't make GPF (and her NHK skates were likely to send her off the podium at another GP). On the other hand, if both Yulia and Anna bomb and Adelina isn't ready... Maybe she'll get Europeans after all.

Adelina won't have many chances to prove herself. The Russian women are so strong that the Fed is ready to dump anyone, even the beloved Julia who was the favorite of the Russian Fed in Sochi. If Adelina is bad at Euros I guarantee she won't be at Worlds.

Agreed with what was said above: If Yulia and Anna bomb, give Adelina a chance (and post the videos later!) to prove herself in Euros. I would be more annoyed if they sent her to Worlds straight away. I don't like the favoritism because she is the Olympic champion, but that is to be expected.

Now, if one of the girls do well, it will definitely not be fair, unless Adelina is sent to Euros knowing she won't go to Worlds. Yulia and Anna have competed for those spots and if they earn them, it shouldn't be taken away not even for the Olympic champion.

Russia has always used Euros as an additional qualifier for worlds. In 2010/11, R/T beat I/K at Nationals, B/S, R/T & I/K went to Euros, I/K finished higher than R/T and got the 2nd spot at Worlds. Similar situation for Kovtun getting the Worlds spot in 2013 - he was 5th at Nats but the highest finisher at Euros, & the federation is currently taking a similar approach to Adelina's case for B/S, and they really aren't guaranteeing her a place if she's not ready - all the statements are if she's fit, if the other girls don't do well at Nationals, if when we see her in early January we're convinced she's got a good technical level back. In any case, it makes sense to me for a country with such depth as Russia to spread around the assignments to the major championships.

"[..] she won't be compared to anyone", "she and her coach will be asked if she's ready", "if Lipnitskaya places third at Nats it means she's not that ready".

Alrighty, Adelina, welcome to the world of Plushenko, with rules of its own.

Didn't agree with it when they did it with Plushenko, don't agree with it now for Adelina.

It also basically says that the olympic team event was not important therefore Yulia can't be treated the same way as the champ in the individual event. Lovely.
What a cynical thing to say for a fed representative, hah. Given that they made a teenager compete in both SP and LP and the great pressure she received resulted in her bombing later in the individual event. Pfff.

Well, he's right about that. Of course, she could also go at Worlds and have a great skate and win the title. But if she finish in 3rd place, and not skate a clean program for the 4rth time in a row, we can say in december that she is not ready.
However, the timing of his comments just before the nationals it's really bad.

I'm fine with the Big 3 ending up being Liza, Elena, and Alena (for now). Sorry Julia and Anna... it's been a rough season, but I'm sure you'll both bounce back next year.

I don't expect Adelina to return this season in competitive form. Evgenia needs a bit more time to elevate beyond the juniors.

Wish I could see more than 3 of them beyond nationals...

Alba, um, this is the Russian Nationals. If you finish at the third place it means you survived a meat grinder, left a beehive safe and sound. It's doesn't mean you bombed or "didn't skate a clean program for the 4rth time in a row".
The point is: no matter who gets the bronze(and no matter the circumstances), the person should be prepared(get cable, for example) to watch the European championship at home on TV if Adel feels good enough. I highly doubt she will, though, but still such comments from the federation are ridiculous.

:laugh2: Agreed. Also, considering the dept of Russian ladies, it is bound to happen that the bronze medalist have a great skate, just not as great as the top finishers. The difference can be quite small...
