State of Russian Ladies in skating: 2014-15 Season

What's worse for the skater leading is they better not get caught smiling when the next skaters are bombing or it will look like they are happy at their misfortune.

Solution: cover your expression up with whatever teddy bears/flowers/broccoli trophies that are thrown at you. ;)

Sadly, this would not have worked here, as those were picked up, put into plastic bags, and into some room somewhere... It would have had to have been for the skater to be foresightful and have picked up the requisite plushies themselves... ;)

Liza and Lena have now not only gone 2-2 in terms of wins, but also swapped SP/LP placements to an equal degree. There is one competition where Liza won both segments (GPF) and one where Lena won both (Nationals). For SkAm and Europeans, one led after the SP, but finished second in the LP and second overall. The common thread seems to be that whoever wins the LP wins the competition.

Also of note: Seems like Lena has higher scoring potential in the SP and Liza in the LP, but they've each won two of every segment, due to consistency/execution.

They're SO CLOSE to each other!! It really comes down to who has the cleaner execution. Liza T's minimal mistakes in the SP cost her (lower level spin, 2A not in the bonus) and Elena's minor FS mistakes cost her (scratchy lutz and loop). The fact that the competition was decided by less than a point is a clear indicator that whenever they both skate cleanly, the result can go either way. I love the way they push each other! And what's better is I know after this season both of them will be upping their game again in an effort to create some space. Liza T will probably go back to doing the 3Lz-3T rather than the 3T-3T and she may even add the 3A...I'd think Elena would probably work really hard to clean up her landings and she may want to tweak her jump layout to get more points. And both of them have to be on their toes because Evgenia and Serafima are coming up fast behind both of them!

It's so exciting! I love the Russian ladies. Their competitiveness really makes skating fun to watch. :cheer2:

Elena Radionova did very well today, though. Her smile everytime the camera focused on her melt my heart.

To each his/her own it struck me as very fake, you could see her turn on the second she realized the camera was on her.

I think Lena simply likes the camera. :) Kinda like, "Oh, hey, you're looking at me, let's say hello."

Lol. Do you really expect people just to sit alone and smile on their own without any reason?
That might be the sign of some mental problem lol. Seriously I wonder why people take time to dig that much. Camera is on, she just smiles. It's not like we can walk into her mind and see that she is faking it or not. Do they want to see her sulking?

You've gotta be kidding me. Nobody goes around smiling 24/7. When she smiled at the camera, it was her way of acknowledging the audience.

Liza is a on a roll and I'm rooting for her to win Worlds. :)

Radionova, of course, could beat her but she's got the momentum now with the GPF and Euro titles.

It appears Elena and Liza are beyond reach for Ashley and Gracie, but the American girls should beat Anna.
I don't think Anna will place higher than #5 at the worlds.

Don't count Anna out, she has improved a lot since last year (and managed to get 4th place at Worlds). I think that 3rd place at Europeans will give her confidence boost she needs.

Not at all, quite the opposite, I think her reaction when she didn't realize the cameras were on her was likely a more genuine expression of how she was feeling, and the camera smiling was a bit over the top. She seems to have a genuine enthusiasm for skating which is great, this particular thing at that moment just struck me as a bit off while I was watching is all.

She slays me 'of course there is Kiira and (short pause) the French girl?'
Always such a contrast with Yulia. On the ice she plays the vulnerable young girl, and plays it so well that I want to hug her every time. But in interviews she seems very headstrong and will take no BS from anybody. Both sides are part of her, and it's why I love Yulia. :)

I fiercely disagree with this post, but I can understand it. Elena actually does have a very serious looking resting face, but when she smiles, it is the happiest looking smile I have ever seen:) (<--way happier than this) "over the top"-smile, but it's genuine. It's her automatic reaction, she doesn't "do it" at all. The serious face+happy smile combo is always there, regardless of the result.

To prove my point: this is from Skate America, a competition she easily won. (a very serious, bored/even depressed looking face in the very beginning): http://38.media.tumblr.com/10c97ebd1a756d610abcf5dc36a42b8b/tumblr_nhd8z4f1ON1rm6ftfo1_500.gif

The smile! It's like she can't wipe it off her face even if she tried to.

You can find this moment in color, at the end of this video http://youtu.be/EnGz3pxmO-A?t=6m37s

I freaking love that girl!! She's so cute and fierce...what a combination! Of course she smiled when she saw the camera was on her. It doesn't look "put on" or fake...she was waving to the fans. Why try to make something negative about that? Some people...:disapp:
