Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

R&J1.0 (2014 world EX, not sure if this counts), Story (2013GPF), Hanawasaku (NHK), I think that no.9 is well choreographed, and he performed pretty well, but the singer kinda ruined it. If it's sung well, I think I would rank it ahead of Hanawasaku. I find most of his Ex programs have decent choreography, better than some of his competition programs.

I am wondering how many of the users of this forum would still watch figure skating if their favorite skaters retire, and they cannot find another skater to like. Would most stop watching or watch a lot less? (Personally, I don’t think I will watch figure skating any more if Yuzuru retires.)

If people do become fans of figure skating as a whole because of one skater in particular (as opposed to becoming just fans of said skater), I think they wouldn't just slink off even if their favorite skater retired. If it's the sport itself they got into as well as the skater, they will find others to like. Even if they won't remain fervent fans, they'll stay as casual fans. For example, I came back to watching FS with interest once I saw Yuzuru and because of him I searched for more info, looked at more detail, learned about the scoring etc. And then suddenly I became interested in other skaters' skating too, and somehow I now I like watching Anna Pogorilaya almost as much as Yuzuru.

Just my optimistic 2 cents.

My favorite EX of Yuzuru's is his White Legend redux. The reason is probably because the Swan Lake main theme is one of my favorite pieces of classical music ever, I absoltely loved the feathery costume and Yuzu skated in that unusual androgynous way of his.

But anyway, I have another topic we can discuss as we are waiting for news on our very favorite skater.
Time to Rate The EX programs! Let's take from his Junior to Senior Years.

I love them all, except for a couple of them primarily because of "not-really-well-performed " live singing. They are beautiful and fun to watch!

I personally like hana ni nare and Hana wa saku the most (can't really decide.between the two ).

I think I pretty much fit this description  one year ago I knew less than nothing about figure skating and from one day to the next I went full-on bonkers. I won't deny that I'm the worst fangirl and it's still very different with this little dork. He has a special place in my heart. But I think that, after he's retired, I might still want to watch other skaters. He makes me more insane than others do, but he's already not the only skater who makes me do fairly stupid things. (like, yesterday I spontaneously decided to go to AOI in Switzerland next week. That's a five-hour drive to watch some skating and then it'll be a five-hour drive back in the middle of the night. I'll probably spend more money on gas and tolls than I did on the ticket, but I have high hopes that it'll be worth it. That counts as crazy, right?)

I'm so bad at rating stuff.
I probably love Change the most because it makes him look happy and hyper and I still think he's a little rock star. It doesn't take much to get me into groupie-mode  Theoretically I could even get into Vertigo but, OMG, those pants, that shirt, I just can't stop laughing. "Hello I love you" would also do it for me, but again with those pahahahahants.
Other than that I'm 100% PRO rock star programs
I really love R&J1 and Etude, and since he's also done those in galas, I guess that counts?!
Hana Ni Nare and White Legend are also great.
Justin Bieber didn't happen.
I wasn't such a big fan of Final Time Traveler. Sarah's voice/singing doesn't really do it for me TBH. It was ok, but nothing I'd seek out on purpose. But seeing it live, it was breathtakingly beautiful, so I just can't be objective with this one :o:

I love his change and Hello, I love you. I think he was expressing himself in those programs. My favorite one now is Hana Wa Saku, which really touched my heart when I saw it and later knew the translation of lyrics. The last program I felt the same way about was Yulia's The Schindler's List.

This confirms my impression that figure skating is not popular in any country. For whatever reason, the number of fans that would watch figure skating for the skating itself is low. Most watch to see a particular skater perform. The difference between the popularity of figure skating in various countries is due to the difference between the skaters’ star powers.

For other sports like soccer, baseball and football, I feel majority of their fans are fans of the sports. They will watch a match regardless of who is playing in the team. But that does not seem to the case for figure skating.

Back to topic: I hope Yuzuru delivers a great SP and LP at the world championship.

In my case. As some have mentioned, I became a fan of the sport thanks to Yuzuru, but I do enjoy watching many skaters even if I don't consider myself a fan of any of them.
I think in all sports it's the same, you may like it but if you find an athlete that grabs your attention I think that you will become more interested on it. That's the impression I get, specially in individual sports.

I like this topic! Hmmm... if its alright i also included his past/current(?) programs for competitions that he performed as an ex or in ice shows and also enumerated them by how much i adore the performance

I almost missed this post XD
for me it would be:
1. Hana wa saku (Even though I already liked it a lot, it wasn't until NHK 2014 that I completely fell in love with it. That performance was just mind blowing, I still cry when I watch it)
2. White Legend
3. Hana ni nare
4. Change
5. R&J 1
awesome topic :points:

Like some people above, I used to only watch figure skating during winter Olympics and when grand prix competition came to my city I would buy tickets and watch sometimes. Before last year, my love were Yuna and Mao. But since last year after I saw Yuzuru's short program, I began to watch all kinds of competitions, worlds afterwards, then ice shows, grand prix this season and nationals. The interesting thing is that even though I begin to watch it because of Yuzuru, I found other skaters lovable and really enjoyed watching them skating too. They are all very different and many of them have impressed me in one way or another. And I heard that most of them are really nice so there is a long list of skaters who I wanna have a photo shot with in the next worlds (Of course I know I wouldn't have a chance with Yuzuru though). Wish me luck!

Exactly the same with you! Except about loving Mao and Yuna. And about the GP competitions.

I'm exactly the same! Got tickets for Kings on Ice, and it's gonna be 7 hours on a train there and 7 hour back. And I think I'm looking forward to seeing Misha Ge, whom I saw this year for the first time, more than Plushenko. I hope one day I'll be able so see Yuzuru live, though.

Thank you for these links, annca! I'm still on the hunt of quality Yuzuru performances, especially the non-competition ones!

I don't know about FS popularity in all of Japan, but it appears someone on the Persona 5 team is a fan; at 2.08 there is a cameo by Yuzuru's ina bauer and Akiko's hydroblade (the girl also does a bielmann earlier in the vid):http://youtu.be/wPqSkzNNPIg

For those of you who are fans of Sugar Autumn from youtube who does the most wonderful job in creating MAD video(including "run through Sochi"), she(I'm assuming) has a new video out. As always, amazing choice of footage! And in the comment section it was mentioned that the background song is by backnumber, of whom Hanyu-san is a fan.

Thank you all for the links and input on ex-program.

Could I know what MAD stands for :o:. The video is awesome, I love the clips that Sugar Autumn chosen which showed a very determined and focused Yuzu

I googled. It seems MAD=musical anime douga, douga is japanese for 'video'. I think Asians use this word a lot....

Thank you very much! I am a fan of sugar autumn. I watched every video of hers, they are all great! I replayed 'still further ahead' several times, and I feel that yuzuru indeed looked very exhausted all the time this season...and this video amplifies this kind of feeling. poor boy he shouldn't have suffered these pains:cry:

This Japanese Wiki says that the original of MAD movies are the MAD Tapes, also called Kichigai (meaning mad in Japanese) Tapes created in Dojin circles of Universities etc. from the end of 1970s.

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/MADムービー

But, I'm not sure how credible this information is.
