Jason Brown

Judging from his track record it seems he can only win in his home buffer zone as he is their crowd favorite. But not in the international scene. With Joshua Farris' 2 beautifully choreographed programs the latter is the only one at this point who could give the US mens a podium finish.

Um, you do realize this is a fan thread right? :)

But you're right at this point, Josh probably has the BV to get on the podium sooner. However, it's not like Jason is faring THAT poorly internationally.

Jason has two GP medals to Josh's, well, zero. You can argue that injuries kept Josh from the podium during both seasons, but it doesn't change the fact above.

Also he did win Nebelhorn Trophy, beating the likes of Voronov, who is now considered a podium contender and Brezina. At the Olympics SP, he beat several top skaters to get in the final group.

**
As noted elsewhere, Jason's PCS at 4CC was quite high. He was basically 4th in the SP despite two big mistakes and he was practically tied for 3rd (Han Yan was just .02 higher) in the FS. 167.35 with a no-quad FS is not something to sneeze at.

For perspective, here are the other skaters who will be at Worlds who have received such a higher score this season:
Yuzuru Hanyu - 194.08
Denis Ten - 191.85
Joshua Farris - 175.72
Javier Fernandez - 174.72
Takahito Mura- 173.24
Han Yan - 172.13

(Shoma Uno and Daisuke Murakami is also above him, but alas, neither of them will be at Worlds).

Maxim Kovtun is right behind him at 166.24 and Sergei Voronov is at 161.67.

It's also worth noting that Jason got that score with a 3Z< (with minus GOE on the combo) and a silly mistake on the spin. He would actually had broken 170 had it not been for that error.

Jason has already beaten Mura at 4CC. Jason has a good shot at being top 6, I think, which is not a bad placement for your first Worlds. And quite honestly, I don't think it's delusion to think he could finish higher (i.e. 4th or 5th) -- the men are SO unpredictable and Jason's score are relatively steady (in fact had been going on a upward incline over the season 153, 154, 159 and now 167). The SP has been more costly (83, 79, 76, 75), but he is capable of scoring up to 86 points in that regard. (his PB at the Olympics).

The podium for Jason would take some major meltdowns by the contenders and absolutely perfect skates from Jason. I really don't want that.

He won silver in SA 2014 by an almost 36 point margin below of Machida. Although yeah, that's still silver. But its Skate America.

Now I hate to agree with you about Jason needing major meltdowns from his contenders or perfect skate from Jason to win a medal, because that's the sad part about how this sport has become. PCS marks just mirror tech scores given mainly on jumps and often if someone jumps well they are also given good marks on spins and steps. Sad how a program should be judged is the over-all execution and the beauty and natural artistry. And Joshua as Johnny said, is more like a natural artist as supposed to Jason who's a choreographed artist. Well I wish both guys the best!

He also won bronze at Trophee Eric Bompard last season. Unless you want to say France is now part of the United States. :) Yes, he was way behind Hanyu and Chan, but he still had to beat Yan Han, Michael Brezina and Florent Amodio to get there.

And FWIW, the crowds loved him there. Unless, again you want to suppose all those fans were actually American: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2013/11/15/63958486/parisian-ratatouille-day-two-at-troph233e-bompard

What a masterpiece is
You may think: "Oh, well, this is yet another skate: triple Axel, triple flip-triple toe, triple Lutz. I have seen this story a million times…" Yes, but… When that same "old story" came back Friday morning, as Jason Brown took the ice for his practice session, the audience stopped yelling and shouting all at once. Brown is not only a crowd pleaser and an artist -- he uses his unique gift to lead you on his own artistic journey. The arena exploded in applause after what was after all only a practice session! One of those jewels only figure skating can offer, and a magical moment for free.

Also let's not get started on the whole choreographed artist thing again.

I wish Josh the best also. As I said, I like his skating as well and like the domestic rivalry.

Yes both are artists in their own ways. :)

LRK and Mrs P: I am going to shut up about TSL from now on, unless it's in a TSL thread. I promise. After writing my post it occurred to me that things were getting way off topic, but it was early so I guess I didn't exercise my best judgment. LRK, I wasn't aware of the sarcasm, although I know they were kind of joking. I guess that goes to show how fallible my powers of observation are. Mrs P : love that analysis you did! I can't see NBC or Ice Network giving us that much detail on screen, but I do think it would be nice if the commentators had access to this kind of a report for each skater for each broadcast, looked at them in advance, and kept them handy so they could better inform us during the comp. Data could easily be put into a database. But I'm pretty sure it will never happen.

I'm sorry to bud in, but as someone who was at TEB 2013: the crowd didn't just love him, they absolutely adored him! He got standing ovations, probably a bigger cheer before the LP and during the medal ceremony than both Hanyu and Chan (and most of the fans there were either french or japanese, and Chan had his squeaky clean LP here!), and I heard a lot of people talking about him during the breaks, saying before the LP how they were so excited about the young American and so on.
Saying he's a crowd pleaser is completely belittling the extraordinaire atmosphere that he can create! I swear the moment he stepped on the ice and was introduced, before he had even skated, you could feel all the people in the arena taking note and being drawn to him. He just has that charisma that makes you like him instantly. And that's not just my view, but something I heard quite a few people say there :)
Sorry I went into uber mode again and said a lot of things you guys already know - happens every time I think of TEB :love::love:

^ Great post. :agree:

Glad you had such a good time there and have been gifted such vivid memories. This sport and the characters it attracts or maybe even creates is something unique to behold. People like Jason have been pulling me out of my hockey roots more and more with each passing day. :)

Yes, I was so surprised the USFSA didn't send him back to TEB. It seemed like such a no-brainer to me. It was obvious the French adore him.

One thing about the whole "choreographed" versus "natural" artiste nonsense. Fred Astaire was one of the most choreographed and rehearsed performers in Hollywood's Golden Age. As was Gene Kelly. Does that make them any less of an artist? Or unnatural?

Sometimes commentators say stupid things.

You have forgotten that FFSG chooses which skaters it wants to invite to TEB.

It is not a matter of USFS "sending" the Americans who compete there.

Yes, this! (The sentence in bold)

I was already long a fan before I saw him in person for the first time last year in Boston, but I was absolutely floored at his ability to grab the audience's attention. This was not a case of people just cheering for their hometown boy --- people could not help but cheer.

The experience of watching Riverdance and that crazy ovation the whole time was amazing. I mean the audience ROARED each time he completely a jumping pass, even a Russian split! I was just like in awe the whole time that I wasn't really cheering.

My husband was completely won over after seeing Jason at nationals. All season long, he would watch Jason's Riverdance FS on television and was like 'EEHHHHH." Namely cause he hated Riverdance as a musical piece. I kept trying to explain why he was awesome, but he wouldn't have any of it. But he was completely sold after watching it in person.

I think people underestimate the ability to stay that engaged with the audience while, well, competing. That's not an easy task. That's what impressed my husband the most. He was struck at his ability to do relatively clean skate (yes, yes, UR on the second 3A, blah blah blah) but yet give a performance while doing it.

That's a special talent to have. If he got there by choreographing it out, then fine. That's called discipline.

Also this is a fan thread, so Li'Kitsu, you're welcome to gush as much as you want.

1. Fan thread.

2. Incorrect.

Ahhh, you were there? Lucky you! I remember seeing the video of the podium, and while Chan and Hanyu got applause, when Jason came out the crowd went ballistic! And both Hanyu and Chan looked really shocked.

Clearly there needs to be a European Jason Brown fans meetup. And somehow I have to get the money and time to fly myself for it.

Haha Mrs.P, yes I know, but I felt like there hasn't been a whole lot of gushing lately, so it was like I was 'breaking the silence' or something

Great to hear you and your husband shared my experience. I have been a Jason fan since I first saw him (in late 2011) and I wasn't sure what to expect from seeing him live for the first time (TEB was my first live experience at all too). As stupid as it sounds, I was a little anxious before... like - what if he really is slow, like some people are complaining? What if his jumps don't look impressive? I was worried like that about a lot of my favorite skaters. But nonsense, he completely blew me away! He wasn't slow, his jumps weren't small. And even if they were, I would still love him. I wanted to take a picture of EVERY movement that he did, because there wasn't one in there that was not stunning. TBH, there were some skaters that disappointed me in person for different reasons. But if that's possible at all, I love Jason even more than I did before.

Also, YES to people not giving him enough credit for the ability to hold the attention of the audience for the whole program. He did it better than any other skater at TEB (besides P/T, who I think were equally good :) ). That's a born talent that you can't teach, but I think it's also linked to his positive and genuine nature, and the fact that he cares for the audience and wants to perform for every single person in the room. The fact that he's a great person definitely comes through in that regard

Also, on a similar topic: before his LP, there was something left on the ice that had been thrown down for the previous skater. Quite a few people saw it, and some women in front of me and I tried to call Jason to tell him. I was pretty worried it might startle him, because you know, it interrupted his warm-up. But naaaahhhh... he turned around already with a smile on his face, picked up immediately what everybody tried to show, and gave us a cute little 'thank you' wave. After he got it off the ice he came by at out corner another time, and even gave us another warm smile and a nod. I don't think I have to tell you how bad of a fangirly moment that was for me

And thanks Sam, I definitely won't forget so many things from TEB! This sport really is something special. I'd like to drag some of my non-fan friends into an arena with me and show them skaters like Jason. I'm sure they'd understand why I'm so in love with this sport :)

You got the perfectly right impression of the applause levels! And even Jason looked a little surprised to me with the huge adoration he got. It's really endearing he's still so appreciative about it, while it actually seems he's getting standing O's after nearly every skate :)

And Mrs. P, yes for the European fans meetup! That would be :party2:!

LOL, yeah, you would think this was the "Jason Brown nitpicking thread," LOL. I think honestly, all the vitriol he got from U.S. nationals made me a bit gun shy about gushing at all. Honestly, I didn't even watch his FS for like several days cause I was afraid that it was as awful as some folks were insisting. But then luckily people who were at Nationals keep gushing to me about how special his performance was, especially considering he had to follow Adam's performance earlier in the group. So when I finally watched it, I realized that it was really really good, 3A< and all.

It's what was needed. 4CC was a lot more enjoyable to watch even with Jason missing the quad in the SP. And watching the FS was definitely pretty great.

Regarding Jason live: Yes, I was so relieved that Jason lived up to expectations. I had some of the same questions/concerns you did and I was pleasantly surprised to see that while he was not as fast as some, he wasn't like a slug out there either. The jumps were good and of course the performance ability is second to none.

Jason has a way of making everyone feel special and warm, that's probably the best thing about him. I love genuine people like that.

L'Kitsu, how lucky you are to have been at TEB. I think that performance of the Prince SP is my favorite of all. And in the FS (I think), I love watching the group of definitely French, definitely women of a certain age, who are clearly appreciating Jason and his talent! Thank you!

I am thrilled this fan thread is back to gush mode. I love everything about his presence on and off the ice. It starts with him high fiving the flower collecting kids, his amazing ability to capture the audience even with mistakes, his reactions in the kiss and cry, his relationship with Kori and so on and so on.
He is so great to his fans, signing autographs with a permanent sincere smile and he has a special, respectful, appreciative relationship with his parents and siblings.
He is an athlete that others children can look up to as he stayed home to go to school, was an excellent student and managed to go to the Olympics and be a national champion among winning numerous other medals.
Most of my friends who are just sport enthusiasts and not skating "experts" like us on this thread, think he is great and pay no attention to the UR, lack of quad, etc. The general public just loves him as was evident on his viral Riverdance video.
I wish for Jason, Josh and Adam to skate their best at worlds and the we see where the chips fall.

Ooh, I would love to go, especially if it were in Paris! Although.... just thinking about how I could embarrass myself trying to gush about Jason in French makes me laugh.

Putting in a vote for Helsinki Worlds 2017. (Just for TMC, since that's her home turf!).
