Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

But this would be 3 seasons from now ... I understand if his wish is 3 quad LP, it's a wish from technnicaly ambitious skaters. If we are thinking that he couldn't skate clean his 1 quad sp and 2 quad LP this season because of his injuries (I honestly don't think so, it affected to some extent, but already at COC SP he was repeating his pattern in having a slow start of the season, anyway) let's think of this strategy: He takes a good rest during the off season and some good old fashioned training, comes into the next season with the same layout, maybe with more transitions like the original SP and FS choreo this season was supposed to be while being healthy. See how it goes. If he skates his LP clean or almost clean while standing upright, at least 2 times great, he's ready for upping the difficulty but if he doesn't ... Let's think about it again. I don't even remember the last we saw a clean LP from him, and by his interviews he doesn't like it either but his decision goes against it. I don't care for scores, he obviously "care" if we think about the winning aspect of it but he once said that it isn't about the score it's about the performance, he needs to be happy with the performance. Will he be happy with his peformance once he adds one more quad if he doesn't have any stable quad sal ...? Maybe i'm overthinking it, sorry ...

Also I don't think practice clips of him doing wonky 4Los, and 1 clean 4 Lo is any indication of him adding it to his program right now ... It's just patice, skater do it all the time.

I think if he was going to COC with planned content with 3 quads, then it clearly means he was able to do it in practice cleanly. He always somewhat bombed on first two gp events, but this season was unfortunate and I clearly think injuires and lack of training affected a lot his performances. He lost strength, stamina that he was prepared for this season with. But I think most difficult was lack of training.

Orser talked in interview that he was landing 4Lo in practice consistently in off season, but for now I think lost too much strength, that was clearly visible on his 4T, that had lower height than normal, and wasn't so dynamic

I don't think that he's the type of athlete who will try to avoid the 3F.
A balanced jump layout (for LP) should have all types of jumps in it.
Totally agreed.

Why is he adding 1 more quad at this moment...? I thought the smartest way for skaters to raise difficulty is to add new elements once their current elements are more or less stable (see Liza and her 3A, see Denis and his thought of adding one more quad to his free now that he skated it pratically clean ...) I understand if quads are the skater's only weapon (Kovtun; Javier to a lesser extent) but in the case of Yuzuru ... It doesn't make sense as hard as I try to understand... And at the same time he says that he wants to skake clean all the time. I don't understand, his two wishes are almost opposites if we are being realistic. Maybe it will do more harm than good for him ... Even if he lands all 3 there's a high chance of him doing it at the expense of the choreography, spins, and other areas of his skating just like he did during two seasons because of quad sal ... Is it just his ambition speaking too loud? But there are other and smartest ways in being a technically ambitious skater ...
At least he should plan on it. You see what happened this season. His plan does not come true because of accidents and injury. And at the beginning of this season everybody thinks he will be the only top male skater when Patrick Chan rests. However at the end of the season, he is among the three tops. And everybody else is working to add more quad or difficulty into their programs, if he doesn't or at least has a plan on it, he will not have so much advantage any more since we all see he does not have advantage of pcs over others.

I know there's a lot of talk going on but I don't think he's considering adding a 4Lo soon. Certainly not next season. Brian said himself, he doesn't encourage Yuzu to try new quads it's just something Yuzu likes to try, so it's not like Brian is in the same mindset of adding a 4Lo. I'm not saying he'll never do it, of course it's natural progression that eventually we'll see 3 quads from him. But I do think Yuzuru's mindset has changed lately. He stubbornly kept his 4S last season despite falling near enough every time, because he was so determined to succeed. And eventually he did, he's landed many beautiful 4S now. But I think now as well, he has a strong desire to win with a clean skate. Higher tech value is great, but even so the audience want a clean skate. He can win with points from rotated quad falls but I think he knows now it's better to skate clean.

Better to have a challenging, quality skate than a skate of higher difficulty with more errors.

I don't think we'll see a 4lo soon either. I'm quite sure he'll try 3 quads next season though since it was the original plan for this season anyway.

Sorry for interrupting the topic that's going on now, but this is a clip of yuzu having an interview with cctv in English (i believe it's shared before), but it's a longer version, with some clips of him refusing interview initially (probably because he's practicing) and more questions being asked:

LOLS that he initially said he'll answer two questions only, but in the end, he had to answer a lot more questions! (and of course, some giving him headaches~ XD)

I agree. No skater wants to be remembered as "the skater who fell all the time, just rotated and won anyway". People still exagerate and are so mean with Patrick Chan even with all the clean performaces he actually managed to do. Skaters want to be be appreciated by the audience because of their performances and build their legacy with it, that's figure skating.

I hope next season we will see a more stable 4S because he only landed 1 perfectly clean 4S in competition during 3 whole years. He said that working on 4Lo helped him with his 4S so if mentally he can address as well he will be fine.

Oh my God, how cuter can he get?!

And this reporter was so very persistent about Beijing, she clearly didn't want to let him go and kept asking the same questions haha

I believe he just practices 4lo to stabilise 4s. I don't want to see him practice 4lo too often because 4lo is really bad for the back and waist.

However on the other hand I understand and respect his obsession with difficult jumps. Yuzu's mindset is very unique. I don't think he will go with simple layout just to make sure he skates clean. I also think fans are in no position to say he shouldn't do this, he shouldn't do that, blablabla:)

Well I would like to see 4Lo from him im competition. I am not sure if it will be part of program in future, but I guess he will try it at least once just for sake of being first to land it  I wouldn't be surprised I he is going to try do that in WTT

Obviously 4S and 4T are the main quads, you can hardly count on 4Lo and 4lz in competition to be consistent. And I am not sure if practicing quad lutz is doing anything good for him. He said his 3Lz problems was because of practicing quad lutz in off season.

Do you know an address where fans can send gifts to Yuzuru? I'm starting to knit a hat for him with a Winnie the Pooh design...though if I find out he's skating at a GP event I can go to, I'll throw it on the ice instead.

He says he wants to perform clean performances, but I think it's pretty obvious that what is essential to him and his pride as an athlete, is that he considers technical difficulty as part of the performance. He probably could have had many clean LPs last season if he took out the 4S and just did a 4T+2T, even though he can land the 4S cleanly in practice all the time. This is the same criticism of why Asada kept going for her 3A when she would two-foot, step out, or fall so many times and mar an otherwise great program. They're athletes and they challenge themselves until they get it right, and get it right consistently in competition, because they consider it a crucial part of their unique performance. Some may call it stubborn, frustrating, foolish, whatever, but personally that never-give-up personality is what draws me to these athletes.

Not that Hanyu is above constructive criticism, but I feel like this is such a huge part of his personality/drive as an athlete, that to not acknowledge that as a fan boggles my mind a bit.

I agree. I'm drawn to the never-give-up personality as well because I have that personality myself. It was what helped me get to where I am now: To be able to act as close as neurotypically as possible. Though different therapies and support helped as well. But the personality of me never wanting to give helped those as well.

Ah, those were really annoying questions that the interviewer asked... It was clear that she wanted a particular (type of) answer, which never makes for an interesting interview...

My thought the same, thank you

Why is that reporter asking him that question? It's inappropriate to ask an athlete to back a city's olympic bid.

IMO, in a sport, it’s never about what the fans wants to see, but what the athlete wants to achieve. I don’t think Yuzu is the type of athlete that wants to have clean performances by playing it safe. I think he gets the satisfaction from skating a difficult program well, not from skating an easier program well. I feel sometimes fans are putting too much of their own preferences/expectation on the athlete. (I know fans want to see clean performances. But athletes have their own goals. I think that’s the main cause of the complaints from the fans about the scoring. Fans want the judging to be done the way they want to see, but not from the perspective of whether the judging is fair to the athlete.) I still believe, as spectators of the sport, we should let the athletes make their own choice. People may think Yuzu is very stubborn. But he is who he is.

By the way, where did he say he will try 3 quads in WTT? I remember he was training for 3 quads before WC. Did he say he will try 3 quads in the LP in WTT?
