I'm very proud of Yuzu! I'm sure it was very hard for him but he pursued each challenges head-on, continued to remain positive and gave his very best. His determination, never give-up attitude and fighting spirit is truly inspirational :cheer2:

This made me very proud of yuzu, but at the same time, it's heartaching to read.... this is such an excessively hard season! Although yuzu has great mental strength and determination, more of this kind of season and he'll drain out before the next olympics! I hope in the bottom of my heart that his next seasons will be much more smoother than this one!!! Please!!! :drama: WTT is coming soon and I'm kind of nervous already, lols~ :laugh:

(Background: when Machida suddenly announced his retirement at the victory ceremony of the National 2014, Yuzuru was already on the way to hospital, so he wasn’t there. Both Yuzuru and Machida fans were dying to see and hear what reaction Yuzuru might have made to Machida’s retirement. So, this interview was a long waited one for both fans!)

Yuzu) It’s hard to describe but he was like my “fellow soldier”. Another expression “rival” is close, too, but it’s not so tense between us. Of course, when it comes to competitions, we are both intense and hardly talk to each other. Nevertheless, we are fellow soldiers, fighting together, in the sense that we both aimed at the same place, the same stage, and the same goal. Oh well, he is much senior to me, and it might be impolite for me to call him “a fellow soldier”, but I believe Mr. Machida would probably tell something similar to what I have just said.

(Interviewer: Did you ever sense that he might retire?)

Yuzu) Yes, indeed, I had sensed that. Last season, I think it was at the Worlds [in Saitama] after the Olympics, Machida said “I would quit being an athlete”. This statement surprised me a lot. But, he also said “I would become an artist”. So, my take is that he might have had some kind of a chapter-closed already at that moment. Of course, it’s my guess and we don’t know his own thoughts, though. I guess, as a result of pursuing his own staking style, he might have thought that it was a high time for him to withdraw. But what is certain is that, probably thanks to him, our attitude and feeling towards performance and skating has clearly changed. Therefore, his retirement is extremely E X T R E M E L Y saddening and makes us miss him, for sure. At the same time, I would like to say sincerely “well done” and “thank you so much so far” to Mr. Machida. That’s my feeling.

So there was symptoms of machida's retirement afterall! But why it seems that yuzu is the only one to have heard machida's plan before the nats? Not even jsf or kozuka etc? I like yuzu's answer in general.

He never made his retirement a secret to begin with. Around Sochi he said he was going to compete for one more season and then retire. After Worlds he hinted that he was reconsidering his plans and having the Pyeongchang Olympics in mind, so that is why his retirement (his timing especially) was a bit shocking.

What Yuzuru is referring to, however, is Tatsuki saying he was done competing as an athlete (aiming for medals) and he was going to skate for the audiences - this is something Tatsuki himself said in an interview.

Apparently, Machida had said before that Sochi Olympics would be his only ones, and that he'd retire very soon.
The surprise was that he decided to retire right in the middle of the season, and not after World, I guess. But such was his decision since he wanted to have time for his studies and give his chance to Mura.

Maybe Yuzu knew a bit more because Machida had told him before? Who knows.
 
Question: is anyone else besides me having problems watch just Yuzuru Hanyu videos on dailymotion? It started having problems two days ago for me.😔is it just me?

Note the changing score in the technical score ticker with the completion of each element.
