Sharing a translation of Mr.Kimura Takuya (a famous Japanese TV star) interview during a radio programme “What’s up SMAP!” Tokyo FM on 1st May about WTT 2015.

[Questions from a listener: “How did you feel about watching the figure-skate competitions live at the venue? Did you stay only for men’s performances?]


You know, the skaters lightly and gracefully move to their starting position of their performance and their skate-shoes stop, making the sound “shhhgghh”. That sound of the skate-shoes scraping the ice, THAT is my favourite.　



With regards to Mr. Hanyu, how could his personality be SO perfect! What on earth was that? What kind of upbringing could possibly nurture such an impeccable human? It was unbelievable.
I would guess he must be quite strict with himself. Because he is probably strict with himself; his deeds and behaviour when he meets other people are so wonderful. Really, he was a complete person, to the point of amazement.

Yes, so, I would love to go and watch the competitions live again, if there is a chance. It’s definitely better to watch them at the venue. Watching them on TV is OK and easier, but live is very exciting. I highly recommend it.

What he exactly described is one of my favourite thing about figure skating too: the sound of the blades screeching when the skaters move to their starting position. Grace, power and control all at once. And because at this point the rink has usually become quiet. It's like the calm before the storm. How exciting! And of course seeing them live and hearing the blades screech all along as they glide so fast and so gracefully. You never have that strong impression of speed on TV. You really have to see it live!

What he says about Yuzu confirms how this guy impresses you as much on ice than off ice. He truly is one of a kind.

Yup, those prices are for all-event tickets. Tickets for individual events will go on sale this fall

It's one of my favourite things too...and I've only heard it on TV so far - never had the opportunity to attend a live event until now - but I hope I manage to sometime! I'm sure the sound and speed are much more impressive in person.

And yes, it's wonderful to hear/read Yuzu described as having such a great personality by people who meet him and other public figures .

Sounds very PChiddy IMO, he's said things like that about Yuzuru and Plushenko when Sochi was near. He seems to compliment his competition but just to kind of avoid sounding like he's just throwing shade (doesn't work). Remember what he said about Yuzuru not being used to having a target on his back and that could affect him? Or how he said he let him win GPF2013? It seems kind of clear he didn't watch their SP because that is a very different style for both Yuzu and Javi. Yuzuru's skating has grown a lot, he has matured, added the 3A combo and two types of quads, something Patrick has yet to do, but well, the comments don't matter as much as what you leave on the ice, I think. Not to take away any credit to Patrick's skating but this type of comments just...

I simply found his attitude pretty...... hard to love or even like! He shouldn't go around saying those things, especially about skipping everything in yuzu's and javi's besides their big jump elements!! That absolutely is disrespectful of them! and him saying that yuzu and javi were skating the same style, at least for yuzu, it is totally untrue lols (Unless he genuinely think that pw and Chopin is TOTALLY THE SAME STYLE Lols! ). Worse than simply saying that he had not watched their skates at all!!

I think this is just his weird sense of humour. He got along very well with Javier, judging from Javier's Instagram. I think Patrick was just teasing Javier. As a Yuzu fan I don't feel provoked or uncomfortable after reading his remarks. Actually I agree with him 90%

It seems, Patrick considers Yuzu and Javier as his only worthy opponents, which I have to disagree. His true threats are Yuzu and Ten, IMAO. Javier is just not on the same level as Yuzu and Ten, no offence to Javier and his fans.

I always struggle when Patrick says things like this because I find his honesty quite refreshing but then I also find it sort of.....rude. I think I understand that he was trying to say that skating skills and artistry are underappreciated. However he made it sound like he was suggesting that the only parts worth watching of Yuzu and Javi's programs are the jumps, which is obviously disrespectful.

It's just silly comments though. I'm sure they don't effect Javi and even less so Yuzu because I doubt he'd ever hear of those comments lol so it's no big deal.

Well…I don’t know what to say. I like Patrick’s skating and I am a fan. But whenever he opens his mouth I kind of start sweating. He is very honest and straightforward, but …it sounds condescending…and somewhat offensive to the other skaters and their fans (just as you feel - I think you wanted to say the former but were too polite to say that directly). He could have put it in a more subtle/polite way, but I think he does not even try to be sophisticated/diplomatic, not even a bit. He just says what is in his mind. He is very bold.

I feel bad that some fans, including a significant number of Yuzu fans, dislike him because of that. He is not a mean person; he just…does not have the manners most of the people approve of (and I may get rotten eggs and tomatoes for this). I am surprised that as a Chinese descendant he does not seem to inherit the culture to be humble, especially compared to Yuzu.

Patrick being Patrick...Like nothing too exciting happened in the men's field while I was away so thank god I'm coming bad to change all that.
And while I agree that Yuzu's FS didn't change much from RJ 2.0, he clearly tried to challenge himself and explore a new style of skating in his SP.
Funny also how he keeps saying that the most important thing to him now is a performance that brings emotions when he botches both Javier's and Yuzu's programmes to just check on their jumps. I'm not sure it's the best way to tell if the guys he's talking about have changed style or not. Not the best way to appreciate the beauty of their performances either. But apparently their performances are not worth watching in their integrality.

I'm sorry but I have a hard time liking this guy: it's like he can never make a genuine compliment to the other competitors. He prefers talking about ice dance because at least it has nothing to do with him and so he feels safe.

The problem is that Chan has been arrogant (sorry but that's the truth) more than once before, and he's seen as childish by many people because of it. I know that's the way he is, and while I always appreciate a person saying what's on his/her mind, I have to say that I don't see it as honesty. It's arrogance, judging without even knowing the truth. It's like he still hasn't learned how to express himself. I wish he could learn, for once.
I know he's not a bad person. I like him as a skater, but definitely not as a person because of it.

But back to Yuzuru, I'm sure he won't care about his comments, and neither will Javi. They have better things to do than caring about empty words. :yes:

Patrick and javier have taken lots of happy pictures together, and patrick visits and will visit cricket club very often, so I assume they must be close enough that patrick feels it's okay to talk in that honest way. Patrick and Yuzu on the other hand look a little awkward whenever they were together, which is totally understandable. So he didnt talk much about Yuzu. But all of these are just my guess. BTW, I found it funny that Patrick said Yuzu's triple axels were good.

Besides, I'm a little bit bored of the courteous atmosphere in the current men's field. Patrick's honesty can add more spice:hopelessness:

May I suggest we stay away from the negatives and keep a positive perspective?

One thing I love about Yuzu (and learn from him) is that he always looks at the strength of his fellow skaters (even those who rank far behind him) and turns it into a positive way to improve himself. He won't be bothered by unfavorable comments. Neither should we. Of course we discuss everything related to Yuzu...I mean, we can just shrug it off if we don't like it...
