Shoma left for the US today, as firal predicted. He's ready to compete!
Will a good Shoma show up or a bad Shoma show up at Skate America?:hopelessness:
Ganbatte Shoma-kun!

Aww, bless him! He is so cute and doing so well dealing with all the media attention, shy as he is.

Seeing the footage of him on ice reminds me of the TSL Instagram from JO time lauding his knees. 'What is it with Japanese skaters and great knees?' someone posted on it.

頑張って [Hope that is right!]

finally, his prospects and potential is getting closer
he can be World Champion this year, his only competition will be the Hanyu

It would be nice if Shoma won Skate America and kept the tradition of Japanese men winning this event, and he probably will. However, too much pressure (like saying he'll be the next World Champion and win everything) isn't good either. Media and fans need to remember this is only his senior debut.

Well, Fernandez, Ten and even Chan (if he adds difficulty and improves during the season) can potentially score around the same or more than Shoma scored at Japan Open. The question is - will they (or at least one of them) skate clean enough for that to happen? But we have to also take into consideration that Japan Open took place in Japan and there they tend to score Japanese skaters quite generously (as it is in all larger figure skating countries). But Worlds will be in USA. He really has to prove himself during the GPs to be scored that generously also there (if he skates clean).

 If Shoma can medal at his GPs and get to the GPF, it will have me spiralling with delight. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. ;)

As far as the pressure question goes, he said himself in that video of him leaving for SA, that this is his first year and he has "nothing on his back" and the only goal in mind is to attack attack attack. I thought that sounds quite promising as far as how his mindset is. He also mentioned that he is able to achieve a lot during practices. I don't think he is feeling any pressure, really. Good luck and I can't wait! :cheer:

Chan's past his prime, he isnt going to get his past rewards even with mistakes, Hanyu might even Fernandez who has not yet maxed their potentials
Shoma is like a more complete version of Daisuke, a huge combination, Hanyu will have to skate clean as Shoma will be his biggest challenge from now

I'm not the biggest fan of Chan but surely it is a bit too early to call Chan to be past his prime? We haven't seen him competing much since Sochi.

he can't compete technically with skaters like Hanyu, Shoma or Fernandez
his skating skills alone wont be enough this time, and more skaters will be knocking in soon, Zhou, Chen etc.

Sure the competition is going to be stiff, but I just think there's a question yet to be answered over what his current level is right now or what level it can be. If he manages to get back to his TEB 2013 level somehow, for the time being I don't see anyone aside from Fernandez and Hanyu (or some other guys like Ten) to compete with him in his totals. Sure Uno and Chen are spectacular, especially the former, but they have yet to prove that they can perform at the high level in both the short and the long in the same competition surely?

Shoma is scoring 163 a minumum for a FS
the question will be what score Chan can score in a FS with many falls this time around, Hanyu is the reigning OGM and not him

Hanyu can score over 200 in FS if he will be clean, but I still think Chan will be at reasonable level, but I think Shoma will make trip to GPF

But if the pre grand prix competition is anything to go by, it was clear that Shoma isn't immune to collapse in a competition. Where everyone had him predicted for Gold, he basically didn't even medal. Hence, I still think Shoma has yet to prove he can hold it together, even though he managed the monster score at Japan Open.

I agree. I think it's a little too early to put Shoma on the podium for gold in the GP circuit. He's talented and shows a lot of promise but I have yet to see him consistently on the senior level. He has a long way to go before he can complete with the likes of Hanyu, Ten, Fernandez, and Chan.
Let's not forget that scores Shoma received at the JO were a little inflated. We don't want another Yulia to happen where everyone predicts that Shoma will win and then he has a nervous breakdown due to the pressure.

So, a question to distract us all from anticipation of SA: which choreographers would you like to see Shoma work with in the next few years (either you think they fit his style or would encourage a broadening of range maybe) and why?

Camerlengo!
Shoma has huge potential and artistic expressions, but I would like to see him push or reveal something inside himself more (Honda-san also said something like this). Further, some of Camemengo’s choreographs tell a story and are perfect with piece of music, like La Strada. If they work together, it will be exciting! (BTW, does anyone know Camemengo is based in Canada or US?)
