TEB is Cancelled

First time poster but long time figure skating fan. I haven't had time to read all the posts here, and maybe someone has already proposed this.... What about using the TEB SP scores for placement for top 6 GPF but also giving a "bye" to the skaters/pairs/dance teams that have already medaled in their GP events but wouldn't qualify for GPF based on TEB SP scores? The number of skaters at GPF would be increased to accommodate those allowed to compete based on the bye. I leave to others to calculate fairness/unfairness in terms of affected competitors...I'm just throwing this into the mix. But it seems to me that the skaters and public alike want to see the highest level competition at the GPF.

Welcome, Heleng! Post long and often! :cheer:

I think it has been discussed, but it is not seeming like a viable solution at this point in time.

I hope you don't think I was criticizing your post or anything. You are right, I was just saying that there was an earlier article where they mentioned that a formal meeting will take place with the final decision being made in all likelihood. Just trying to give more info because as of right now even though some officials have voiced ideas of how to resolve it, nothing is set in stone yet. It seems that there are new posters in this thread who were not following from the beginning and wanted the latest news without having to go through all the posts (I don't blame them).

And I hope I did not sound sarcastic in my previous reply to you.
I did not think you were criticizing. I would be the first to admit that I have missed a lot of posts in the last 24 hours or so. I am trying to keep up (more or less ;)), but the volume and frequency of posts are not making it easy.

The discussion seems to be going around in circles to some extent, but it is nobody's fault, because the threads are so popular and people (understandably) are coming and going from the conversations.

You and I are very much on the same page, as far as I'm concerned :).

Did they give any indication of when that would be held?

I did not think you were being sarcastic at all, I genuinely was worried that I came off as criticizing your post :ghug:

From what I can remember they said Monday or Tuesday. I'm not sure if this was an already planned meeting where they will now have to deal with TEB or if they are having a special meeting just because of it.

I think #4 and #5 are the most reasonable, aside from delayed free skates in the same venue w/o the audience. But the PB idea is the most fair-they couldn't say they it was unfair if it was set up like they skated the best FS they've ever done!

Even more fair is to average out all their FS scores of the last two seasons and add that score to their SP one.

I'm sure some skaters (all the winners, plus people like J/C and Roberta who did far better than they were predicted to) would be happy with the SP result solution. But it would leave other skaters (Liza, T/M, Patrick, Max) empty-handed. There's really no solution that helps everyone involved, so the organizers just need to do whatever they see fit and that will be that.

Ho about a hybrid of #4 and #5. For official results, use short program. But also figure out theoretical placing using some other LP score. For those who medal using theoretical placings, if theoretical placing points would get them into GPF, add them to GPF. This would mean up to 9 skaters per event in GPF, but probably not 9 in every event. It would improved field at GPF by possibly adding some very good skaters like Liza and Chan. It wouldn't unduly disadvantage anyone (i.e., everyone we would qualify under using SP results alone would still qualify).

What seems viable or not is in the eye of the beholder.

My two cents are that Heleng's idea (shared by some others) seems a lot more viable  to me than some of the other suggestions being offered in this thread.

(Of course in the end, it does not matter what seems viable to me or you or Heleng. The decision is out of our hands.)

I believe the official meeting is on Tuesday, but an answer might come sooner, depending on how fast the ISU makes the decision.

Welcome to GS :)

Yes, that has already been proposed here at GS, and I think it's one of the better suggestions.

Another similar idea would be to use TEB SP scores for determining the top 6, as per your suggestion, but then to provide an additional two spots for the next two skaters in the standings who were at TEB.

Basically, both ideas propose using the SP as the basis for calculating the top 6, but then add some spots to make up for the fact that those at TEB did not have an opportunity to participate in a full competition here.

Personally, I would be fine with either approach, but I do think that any additional spots should be limited to TEB skaters because they did not have the same opportunity as other skaters to skate two programs in two competitions.

Number 1 this I a tragic time and whether the cancellation of TEB is due to safety concerns or respect it doesn't matter. AT a time like this we all need to band together regardless of differences or interests. As for the g\pf which really seems hardly important right now I am not sure they can now arbitrarily pick results from the sp as the overall results - to do this he info had to be available before hand. The skaters shuold know in advance how scores or placements will be decided ; my heart and prayers go to France at this time. may peace rule our hearts not hatred.

I have a difficult time seeing why this is hard for some to understand.

The competition was halted midway through. No one's fault. The SD/SP standings will constitute the final result. Nothing else to be done. They're not going to be able to reschedule it... elite skaters' schedules aren't made week-to-week. They're mapped out far in advance.

They're certainly not going to take the most absurd suggestion of factoring in scores that weren't even skated at the event. They're also not going to start taking more people into GPF because they skated too poorly in the SP/SD to earn enough points to qualify.

I suspect there wouldn't be so much drama on the board about it except some people's favorites are now in position to miss the GPF. I can understand. I'm a Max fan, and he's not going to make it.

My disappointment is tempered by the comfort that I'm not one of those 100+ families who will be burying someone killed by these savages.

But it's unfair to the skaters at TEB - ALL OF THEM. As was pointed out in the other thread, there have been many cases already this GP series where the final results get a radical shakeup after the FS. It's not the skaters' fault that the competition was cancelled. Why should they be robbed of an opportunity made available to every other skater? The playing field will no longer be level if the SP results are made to stand from TEB.

Actually, I disagree. I think that people aren't kicking up anywhere near as much fuss because the skaters who are going to be most hurt from this are "unpopular" skaters. Now imagine if it had been Skate Canada. The Hanyu fans would be blowing up the internet with their fury.

And for the record, since this is NOT the first time I've been accused of ONLY protesting this because I'm a Max (and Liza) fan: I would have kicked up exactly the same protest had this been Skate Canada and it was Hanyu who was looking at missing out.

chan, max and liza unpopular?

Whoa! This thread was 12 pages long the last time I got a chance to look at it! Now it's 43!!! :jaw:

That's a bit too much for me to go through. So, can anybody tell me if we have had an official announcement as to what is happening with regards results.

Judging by the last couple of pages, it looks like there is still confusion as to what is happening. Or is that just people giving their opinions on what they think should have happened?

Knowing this forum, it's hard to tell.

Comparitively speaking, yes. Chan is - well, Chan. Liza is a Russian lady. And Max is without doubt the least liked of any of the US men and for no good reason.

If it had been Hanyu...Mao...

There has not been any announcement. It has been recommended to the ISU to use the SP results, but that is not confirmed and deeply unfair. The ISU will have a meeting on Tuesday.

It's likely that the ISU will adopt the proposal to use the SP results. Mishin gave an interview last night saying so.

Thank you karne!

So, everybody is still in the dark then. :rolleye:

This can't be fair on the poor skaters that are left in limbo. I feel really sorry for them. :disapp:

I just can't imagine using only the short, I really can't.

I just keep thinking, what if this had happened back in the day, and the decision was made only on school figures. Would that have been fair? Well, that was what the short was designed to replace.

I do feel deeply sorry for Max, if that is the decision, but that is not why I think it is unfair. If FS were meant to be decided on one program, it would be decided on one program. I would rather see the results discarded altogether than based on the short.

I guess that makes me a majority of one.
