A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

I think we're thinking of two different seasons. I'm talking about Cynthia's Cleopatra LP at Worlds following the Olympics. The year that Cynthia placed 5th
The year she placed 5th at Worlds she didn't do a skate off. She came second behind Joannie At Nationals, and went to the Olympics and then was the top-raked Canadian lady heading into Worlds because Joannie didn't do Worlds that year.

Thanks 4everchan, I'm thinking of two different seasons. I saw her the Spanish Guitar year which was in the fall of 2010 AFTER she'd placed fifth at Worlds 2010 when Joannie did not attend. She wore a very striking gold dress in her SP which she won. However, she didn't have a good long program and lost to Alissa Czsiny.

The real travesty in PCSs was Kovtun getting higher PCSs than Uno. (And to a lesser extent Ten over Uno.)

Uno won anyway, so what difference did it make? Uno just turned senior...his scores will go up if he is relatively consistent. This is nothing new in figure skating. And we're talking about less than one lousy point's difference. "Travesty" is a massive overstatement, especially considering everything else going on right now.

OK, it's not a travesty, it is a scoring inaccuracy.

To me, Uno blew the roof off the joint (and interpreted the heck out of some really difficult and unusual music.) He should have been miles ahead of everyone else. Frankly, it was the other guys who looked like juniors in comparison (except Murakami. YMMD of course. :) )

Hmm, I wonder if they can re-schedule the FP of TEB to the week of 3-5 December, at the same venue. It would be an amazing occasion to show everyone that French people are not scared, and I think that the athletes will be pleased to show their support for France by coming back and skate there.

But what inherently would not be right (IMO) -- if the proposal is accepted -- is that Shoma would be given 15 ranking points for just an SP, whereas winning the SP at Skate America was not sufficient for Max to earn his 15 points. Same for Javi at Cup of China.

There is nothing "fair" about the Grand Prix anyway. Some skaters do not get invited to compete at all. Some fields are stronger than others. A skater might get sick and have to withdraw.

For those who think Yulia Lipnitskaia should have a chance to go to the GPF: You're forgetting that she was 6th in her first event with 5 points. Even if she retains her 2nd place, 18 points would not be enough for a GPF slot.

Liza Tuk was 2nd in her first event, so a good FS could move her up to 2nd. At SC, Liza was in 7th with an even lower score than she got at TEB, and she scored 133.62 in the FS to win silver.

Who should have been placed above him? Petrov? Aaron?

haha nope
He finally has shown some personality! totally deserved:laugh:

to me Gracie was terribly overscored but again its my personal opinion

I think you're the first to bring up the issue. :)

Even more, Liza got 120, 128 and 133 for her FS this year. Yulia got 108 and 109.
Which means if Liza skated her free like she skated all season (not just best score), she would have medaled - and most likely a silver. Any of the scores in the range above would have taken her to the podium, quite likely.

According to Kogan all the Federations agreed to use SP results as official results of TEB. However, there is a proposal to give 'maximum opportunity' to skaters 'who deserve it' to qualify to GPF. No names were named, but I suspect Aaron, Chan, Tuktamysheva and probably Tarasova/Morozov and Gilles/Poirier are the most possible contenders.

I wonder what would be "maximum opportunity" in this case.
I mean, just curious, couldnt imagine anything that would give an extra opportunity to Tutk to get into GPF that didnt involve more skating.

Well, i have hope though - out of the federations they list, Russia, USA, Canada and China have athletes that may end up out of GPF because of having a not so good SP, but with potential to climb out in LP. So a bunch of people interested.

Translating to simple language.
Canadian federation agreed but Chan must qualify.
US federation agreed but Aaron must qualify
Russian federation agreed but Tuktamysheva must qualify.

Really why didn't they just let the skaters finish their lp at the next grand prix event? and judge them seperatly from the 'real' grand prix event?
Because I can't think of what it means to 'give maximum' chance for those who 'deserve' it???
Do Chan and co skate another Lp, which is scored? or are they are just all getting invited to the gpf? What about Roberta Rodegiero? It may have been her breakout performance, but who decides whether she 'deserve' it or not?
What about those like Gracie, who's known for her inconsistency and now just got her gpf spot gifted? Maybe she would have bombed in the lp so that she would have gotten second or third place?
What about Chan, who's also known for his inconsistency? Is he just gifted to participate at the gpf because everyone thinks he 'deserve' it, even though maybe he too, would have had a very bad free skate and wouldn't have made it to the finals?
Really, this decision is a mess and not fair at all because not an actual performance decides whether the skaters 'deserve' a shot at the gpf, but their reputation.

We all now how much the results can differ between the sp and the lp. I'm for giving out the gpf spots based on a judged free skate, whether skated per video chat at the home rinks with all judges participating, or in some new location. But this is really unfair, not only for those who may have pulled it in the lp, but also for all skaters who had to earn their gpf spot with two skates.

Reading between lines, yes, this seems to sum it up correctly. A selective fairness as per usual

Nononono, they need to make sure that Peng / Zhang and T/M are also in, that would be a more fair selective fairness lols
