Yuzuru, in SC:luv17:

Oh, boy I really love the way he says this. Although I'm angry with him for not being able to speak English better than this. The limited time of practice in Canada and the difference between Japanese and English and ... all are excuses. As a person who teaches people at his age at university, it is not acceptable for me  He's been simply lazy. He should have learnt English systematically. But, then we wouldn't see and hear this cute sentence from him. So maybe I need to forgive him. what a dilemma!

Yes, he should have. However, people learn languages at different rates and some find learning languages harder than others especially if it was a language not used in the person's main environment. I think in terms of grammar and vocabulary Yuzuru may have it all pinned down in his head. But articulating them is another matter. Sometimes confidence is also a major factor. He seems to be fine speaking with Brian but when it comes to the press, his confidence with the English language might not be there. But kudos to him for trying to speak English at the press conference. That itself is a major improvement. And according to the latest interview with Brian, he has come a long, long way. I've seen many cases of this and I don't think it is fair to just simply attribute this to laziness.
