Sergei Voronov

Some GSers who were there in person thought he was undermarked, & said the audience even booed the judges. It's what it is though, and yes, great improvement, which is promising. He wasn't going to get to the final in any case. It was a pleasant surprise that he was invited to commentate on the gala for Russian tv, though. :)

That's what I thought : compared to some other skaters that had also to fight with some landings, Sergei's TES seems a little low. And he seemed to think so in the K&C.
 
He is in first place after the SP with 84.53. Who knows how Denis will do tomorrow, could go either way...but it must feel pretty good to be the first skater to start & remain unbeaten at the end of the day!

Beast on Ice

While Hanyu broke the world record, we saw a guy with tattoos, breaking hearts. I am surely not the biggest men´s skating fan in this world, but! I have my moments and today, I had them twice. What a beast of a performance did Voronov perform. Holy moly, mushroom. That was just out of this world! His performance to Muse had everything I expect of a man on the ice. Power, he looks bad *** and he skated bad ***, opening up with his quadruple - triple toe combination and later Axel and loop, both receiving the 10% bonus, while showing a clean exit and landing. There is no cheating or shaky exit, it is clean and stable, he really presents those elements and does not try to just get away with them.

I do not know what it is, but Russian man skate very good on the ice. The same it was with Plushenko or Menshov and the same it is with Voronov. They do not just pull the quads, no they perform the elements clean and safe, while having strong expression and "man" power. It was surely a big day when Hanyu broke the record, but for me - this guy here, he skated fantastic, heads up high, strong eye to eye contact and even speeding up accordingly to the music during his step sequence. WOW!

Yes, I hope someone can translate. I only can understand a few words, but I think perhaps they were a little unhappy with the judging, because the winner didn't attempt any quads...am I on the right track? Granted, Jorik did well with his easier layout & Denis & Sergei did have some errors, so...:confused2: It's weird, we have people worrying about the direction of the sport w/guys like Boyang, but then you see events like this & CoR where the quadless guys get held up and someone like Sergei doesn't have a chance (don't get me wrong, his FS here was not his best, but the SP should have been a few points more ahead of Jorik, imo).

Yeah, a nice interview. By the way, it was taken not by a journalist, but by a fan - that's why it is so funny and easy-going. :)

Sergei and Denis were asked if they had fulfilled their own tasks for this event. Sergei said "Well, Denis, I think we should work more at the free program". He said that it's necessary to do two quads in the free program and all the other necessary elements, to show the real men's skating, and that his goal is to get ready for the Russian Nationals, Denis's goal, he thinks, is to get ready to the Four Continents.

The interviewer laughed that Sergei had answered for them both, and Denis joked "he's my representative".
Denis was asked to say a few words for his Russian fans, which are rather numerous, and he thanked them for supporting him.

They said that they knew each other since childhood, and that at first Denis had watched Sergei's performances on TV, and Sergei was rooting for Denis at the Sochi Olympics. They both said many good words about each other, Sergei said that he learned a lot from Denis, and they both wished good luck and health for each other.

They weren't talking about judging in this interview, but that fan wrote that at the victory ceremony, when Sergei was greeting Denis, he said to him "yeah, we really need to do our quads (properly)"
 
Thanks, borzaya! I understood just a few words like 3A, quads, masculine/men's skating, Vancouver...and Denis wrote on his IG that he was a little confused by the judging, so I thought maybe that was a theme. LOL at Sergei talking for Denis. :laugh:
