Yuzuru was 19 when he won OGM and 17 at worlds w/ bronze.
Patrick was 18 at worlds w/ silver.

Hey Skating Fans, after watching the last couple of events, I've noticed that US Men's field is decidedly deeper this season. With the exception of Grant, I had heard of all the skaters but, it was nice to see Alex Johnson skate well this early. I don't like to put skater's down and I really don't like talking about Jason Brown. Most of you know that I have been a Josh fan YEARS and I've read more negative things about Jason Brown than I care to talk about.
Jason and Kori, to my knowledge, have never said a bad word about Josh and I don't think Jason's the type to get into that kind of thing. His fans OTOH, have always been very "supportive" Robustly so. Anyway, up to this point, it really has been a good season for the US in general and it's nice to see our skaters making a statement this early in the season.

No............The negative things I saw were directed toward Jason. Are you kidding......I'd have flames coming out of my head if they said something about josh. :dev2:
I do agree with you that the U.S. men has had a lot of depth this season. However, it remains to be seen if any of them can break into the Holy Trinty (or power four, I guess with Ten back in form). It would be great to see that happen in Boston with lots of U.S. fans, but I don't think that is a realistic target. I think what's good about depth that it does force everyone to work hard to improve.

That's EXATCLY how I feel. At this point, I can't see a US Man on the Podium. Even at 100% Jason and Adam are no match for the BIG 3 and when you add Patrick to the mix, I'd be very happy for a 5th place finish for the top US Man.

On the other hand, ice is slippery! Denis Ten spoiled the party back in 2013 and Javier went from 9th place to 3rd while reigning medalists Hanyu and Takahashi were off the podium.
But however, if I was a BETTING (edited for i cannot type properly) woman, I'd say the odds are against the U.S. men at this point.
In the meanwhile, I have some number crunching to do!!
They haven't put the Golden Spin results in yet, though...

What are the chances of keeping 3 spots, do you think? If Max and Jason make the world team, I feel like they fit in between 5-9th places. On the bubble!
Huge nail bitter. Part of reason U.S. was able to get three spots is that two of the three members of the Japanese team fared poorly...they missed three spots by one placement (2nd Yuzuru, 12th for Kozuka, I think). I don't think that will be the case with a Yuzuru/Shoma team.
I'm think a 6th/7th would do it or a 5th and 8th is one of the U.S. plays spoiler but not break into the Fab Four of Yuzuru/Patrick/Javi/Denis.

I am surprised, mrrice. In my experience I have found that most fans of one at least like the other, and it is generally a very supportive rivalry. What did you see, and where?
Much as I'm pleased for them that they won etc etc, wasn't the whole purpose of the Challenger Series to give prize money and ranking points opportunities to skaters from little countries and/or skaters without a GP?!

While you're crunching. Can you tell me where that cutie Misha Ge fits in? He makes me smile and seems very happy go lucky. With all of his Visa problems I would really like to see him finish strong.
I think Mrs. P's number-crunching will be for the U.S. men -- as a preview of where they stand against each other going into U.S. Nats.

Traditionally the little countries benefiting from the prize money and ranking points are European. Easy travel and nice benefits for their poor little skaters. Only in the last couple of years have there been a couple of Challenger events approved to take place in N. America so some of the loots may be shared.
N. American skaters in need of points for qualification used to have to travel to Europe to earn them. Probably an even bigger issue for Asians.

Karne, I honestly don't remember where I saw the negative words because I don't read the entire message. I learned long ago to skip messages as soon as they take a negative turn. I certainly understand people who have their favorites but, I don't think it's necessary to put people down.
Before Josh. My two favorite skaters have been Patrick Chan and Maria Butyrskaya. They have both experienced a lot of negativity from some skating fans and I've decided to ignore the bad stuff. Skating is fun.
I'm going to add one more thing to my statement. I truly wish that some of the fans who say negative things could see how they affect the skaters. I've never coached skaters but, I've had MANY Dance Team Students come into my office in tears because someone called them fat, or ugly, or made fun of one of our dances. Most of the time its easy for them to shake it off but sometimes...It can really tear them down.
I hope it's something you never experience although, I think most of us have. Including me.

Denis Ten only skated Golden Spin.
Next finisher was Adam Rippon with a total of 237.87, lower than both Jason's scores, so Jason wins.

Although I am happy for Jason and Max (and Adam just missed third) for bragging rights, I tend to agree. We all know some smaller feds that have great skaters.
And I have been ubering a Canadian ice dancing team this year that had scarcely any comps (although I think that may be partly the Canadian fed, because they are brand new), and I would have loved to have seen at a Challenger event.But with the top four men so firmly established, although I think the American men have wonderful depth (even more, than, gasp, Japan), they do not have a podium contender. So I like the reputation boost, small though it may be....
I do not believe in betting in the men's field. Very hazardous for anyone's wallet.

I had this discussion with someone I knew one day. They'd thrown $50 on Mark Webber getting pole and winning the race at the Nurburgring in 2009, but they got on him on the Thursday, when the odds were long. This guy won about $4000 I think. And he asked, have you never been tempted to bet on Mark? You always say he'll win.And I'm like: I don't understand how anyone could bet on sport. There are so many variables. It might rain. It might not rain. An animal might run over the track. An athlete might get food poisoning, might sleep on a funny angle and crick their neck, might trip on something and fall, might inexplicably hurt themselves doing some seemingly minor thing. The equipment might fail, or it might not start at all. The referee might make a bad call. The referee might make a good call. A fan might run on the field. There might be a power outage.
As we can see, I'm not very good at this gambling thing.
I like my controllables firmly controlled and try not to dabble too much in the uncontrollables.Similar threads
