Yulia Lipnitskaya

Sometimes when I'm talking to one of our Russian coaches I can't tell if she's kidding until she's smirking at the very end and pinching at my cheeks. I just start laughing but I swear...I thought there was a serious issue going down until the very end there

I do the same all the time. The reactions are always hilarious :) ;) the key is serious face.

Basically yes. I didn't find that funny, honestly. Doesn't mean it is not funny, it is just not funny FOR ME. I was told million times that I have a VERY weird sense of humor. For example, when I'm talking to someone and try to say something funny they don't know if I'm serious or kidding until the last moment. Besides, many people find my words and thoughts funny when I do not intend to be funny. Maybe it's because I'm Russian? We're really weird people, right?

Her answer "Потому что", what came to my mind was a saying "Потому что кошки не едят из ложки" (because cats don´t eat with a spoon). In connection with a question on cat tracks seemed a little funny to me (not saying she meant it like that, just first thing that popped in my mind).

Not exactly word-to-word translation, but it's pretty much what she means:
'I don't need internal calmness, I need internal equilibrium (or balance)'.

In that case I mis-quoted her words. It was her witty response to the question. Thank you, Snow.

:thumbsup:Internal equilibrium (balance)! I like the phrase.

Now if she would posted that, that would be funny :)

That's because we love sarcasm, and sarcasm is all about keeping a straight face :)

Ok...here's my lousy attempt at summarizing a tiny portion of her answers with the help of Google Translate. (Russian speakers please feel free to correct, add, alter if there's something wrong)

Currently lives in hotel, paid by sponsor.
Not a fan of Periscope, says it’s not for her.
Will not be changing her program music with less than a month until Nationals.
Will not revive her Schindler’s List program, because it would be weird. “Everything has its time”.
Her favorite program is Megapolis.

Regarding other skaters:

Adelina - good attitude towards each other, but they rarely meet/communicate.
Liza - Loves Liza. Really good friends (bffs?) after France.
Elena - Loves Lena. ‘Hero’ status after Rostelecom.
Hanyu - shock, awe, admiration, “To do Hanyu, you must be Hanyu” etc, etc, etc.

EDIT: I think I'll do a direct copy of some of her Q&A later....humor and sarcasm can not be summarized.

I don't think it matters much at what time of year a bungee jumping injury occurs. That's something that has to go well. I read online that the walkway that she was at the other day offers bungee jumping. :hopelessness:

I think someone should ask her if she would wear a GoPro and do her famous spins and her gorgeous Ina Bauer. She said it was a good idea once during her VK Q/A sessions.

I added a question mark. At least that's how I read it. Sounds like something Alba would say ;)

I'm from a different culture. Could somebody please explain the message behind the words?

I think it's a little like "Man proposes, but God disposes" - meaning, that people make a lot of plans, but who knows if they will come true or not. Of course, someone may have a better explanation.:)

That's a very good way of saying it. I think she just wants to take life one day at a time.

FWIW: the original quote appears to be a Woody Allen quote.

I think it's an jewish proverb "We plan, God laughs" (and therefore probably present in christian and muslim cultures as well). If you believe that god plans all our lives it's indeed funny to tell him your plans. But it's probably not a bad idea if you do, if you believe he'll probably consider your wishes. ;)
Julia's answer is wise, I'm sure she has at least some rough plans, but that's really nobody's business. What if she plans to end her career if she doesn't podium this year at Nationals? And by then she could have changed her mind and want to continue anyway.

That would be an odd plan...to quit after working with a coach for only one month. Especially since the financial aspects have been worked out for the next two years. She also has a long term deal with adidas that lasts thru the next Olympics.

Speaking of Adidas. New photo.

I agree with your assessment on the saying. Spot on:thumbsup:

Thank you, LRK, Sam, and psusanne. It's a good saying to learn. I mistakenly thought it was "men are too humble to make worthy plans." :p

I guess this is probably also a witty and polite way to say "I won't tell you" or "I do not have time to tell you."

On top of my head, I cannot think of any equivalent sayings in my first language (mandarin chinese) ...

Two year financial? I did not know that. Good for her.

An absolutely beautiful photo from Ask http://akphoto2.ask.fm/684/294/419/-219996979-1tjld2f-c7ajcm4h1sh43ia/original/file.jpg :luv17:
