2015-16 Grand Prix Final Ladies SP

It's mostly in the genes what your skin will look like when you grow older. Don't trust what L'Oréal is trying to sell you. ;)

It's not about having wrinkles or not in her case. Her face has become a bit puffy. Looks like a mask.
I hope she doesn't bow to the pressure #foreveryoung. I stay far away from L'O'real or any of those crappy product on my face/skin. I just use 100%natural oils like castor/coconut/Shea Butter.

US skating in a nutshell:
Ladies are headcases when the stakes are high
Men can't do quads
Pairs can't do SBS jumps
Dance thank God we are good at something

I think if the ladies don't get it together by Worlds they might do their reputation (official and otherwise) irreparable harm. This season will be right-off for them and next season the judging might get harsher if they continue to show a pattern of falling short of the kind of skating expected by the elite skaters. As it is, it's getting old right now. :disapp:

This is Gold's BEST CHANCE to podium at Worlds. The judges are salivating to hand it to her on a platter.

I was on the tread the whole time, and missed both of those. There is a difference in those two things though, it's ridiculous to suggest she be dinged on jumps for doing tanos, but someone is entitled to find her "the most boring" (for the record I disagree with that, but that's neither here nor there). And both of those are quite different from calling people "ugly trolls".

To set the record straight on my side I'm a fan of Evgenia's, but I don't like her short program, I think her scores (at least the TES) are well deserved. I just took offense to people being bashed for their opinions.

You can find them around pages 30-35 (I believe I noticed them around there). There was another one which was more rude & that I will not repeat. And yes, of course people have the right to state their opinions, but I don’t believe this should give them the right to insult someone. And I’m saying this while not even being a fan of hers. However, I agree to disagree, since I would rather go and post nice things on fan threads.

Generally both Americans and russian commentators are always so rude about russians and americans. Also on TV I remember Scott Hamilton & co always talking bad about Irina Slutskaya, or Tarasova so rude with some skaters. British commentators are the fairest.

:agree:

That is very harsh. The pairs part is sadly true, but I just can't buy the men's part. Americans can't do quads? Have you seen Max Aaron? And our best junior just won the JGPF with a 3-quad (all clean!) free skate! Just because a few of them can't quad doesn't mean ALL of them can't quad.

And our top ladies may be inconsistent, but they CAN skate well and I, for one, am not going to give up on the very talented skaters we have (Gracie, Karen Chen, etc.-and aVivian Le in juniors has more talent and potential than most of the seniors right now) just because they need to work on consistency. And all of them are IMPROVING, which is all they can do. It might be a consistent problem with the US ladies, but almost every country's skaters have a specific area that everyone struggles with.

I love our skaters, inconsistent or not, and I just wish more people would appreciate that they're TRYING. Not every skater does well under pressure but at least they're (mostly) trying to get better.

This sentiment has been used repeatedly with the U.S. ladies every. single. season in recent memory. "They're trying! They're improving!" How many years of "trying" is it going to take? Where is all this "trying" and "improving" leading them? Competitions are about delivering, not trying.

I understand, and I wish there were something we could do about it but there isn't. It's up to the skaters to fix it, and no amount of complaining is going to change anything. I sometimes just wish I could say something positive or like a skater with serious flaws (I.e. Anyone...) without being refuted or told to "be realistic." I follow skating because I love it, and I want to be able to come here to talk about it positively. It should be fun to watch/discuss skating-That's why it bugs me when people say things like this. It's not as if it's going to do anything for the skater, so why is it necessary? Can't we just enjoy the skaters we enjoy?

I think it's great that someone is a fan of a skater even if they don't have overwhelming success, a lot or even any championship titles. Many times someone's favorite performance is not the one that wins anyway.

I think part of the burden should be placed on the U.S. Fed, who needs to re-vamp how its skaters are training.

Not that this makes this better, but there are sports teams with FAR worse droughts than the U.S. Ladies. Cleveland hasn't won a sports championship in six decades (and LeBron James could arguably be the Gracie Gold of Cleveland athletes). The Chicago Cubs came thisclose to the World Series, but alas their century-old curse continues.

I have a very different -- but clearly unpopular -- assessment of Gracie's skate today. I don't think it was nerves that cause the double flip. I think it's a frequent mistake that has to be fixed. We all have them in our respective professions and passions. I'm glad to see fans like Layback11 have grace for the skaters they like.

The audience booed at the score, which tells me that Gracie connected to the audience, which is a good thing.

I have to admit that the random unrelated conversations here are pretty funny.
Anyways, I was finally able to catch up with the videos and the protocols, and I think every single skater was marked at least a bit oddly for their performances (whether good or bad).

1. Evgenia: Okay, I'm getting straight to the point. Wonderful performance, disgusting scoring. She was out there selling every bit of that program and I loved the joy that both she and the audience were expressing. But the judging was terrible. And I also heard the Eurosport guy saying that she may be the best ladies figure skater ever. No way. She is far from being on the same level as Michelle Kwan, Katarina Witt, Yuna Kim, Mao Asada, etc. Something tells me that the judges really want to give that title to her NOW. Both her TES and PCS were ridiculously inflated, although I don't have too much of a problem with her TES (since her program is really difficult). Her PCS is a different story. Judges #2 and #9 are clearly insane fans of her. The idea of Evgenia getting 34 for PCS right now is terrifying. Since that performance was better than her previous two GPs, I'd give her a 32 at most. But 34? First-year senior? With Mao Asada, one of the best figure skaters of all time in the same field? At this rate, they may score her 146+ for a clean FS.:hslap:
2. Elena: Considering the mistakes, the score seems a bit too high. But what's important is that she gave it her all. Very impressive, putting that 3T with the 3Lo! I'd give her about 67-68 for this performance. At least her score isn't absolutely outrageous. The performance was very good, and I really enjoyed the program. Now, if she can just sell that FS too...
3. Mao: The 3A was gorgeous. After NHK, I was worried about her condition, but it seems like she's back on track now. But seriously, trash that 3Lz out of the SP. It's causing too much of a problem right now. As for the combo, I do think that one of the jumps deserved a UR mark, but not both. At this rate, the only skater that can beat a clean (and not overscored...) Evgenia in the FS is Mao. I hope Mao has a good skate tomorrow!
4. Satoko: As expected, Satoko never fails to amaze me. After her beautiful performances at NHK, I did not know what to expect. Most of the current ladies skaters that I'm a fan of have consistency problems, but as a new fan of Satoko, I don't really have to worry about that. Anyways, I was a bit surprised that she still managed to get 68.76 even with the 3F being deducted. I do think she should've been much more close to Elena and Mao, though.
5. Gracie: So this may be the first time ever that someone not named Carolina Kostner or Akiko Suzuki beats Mao on the GOE of a level 4 step sequence, in the same competition. That honestly is an impressive achievement. I wasn't too surprised by how she did here, because I was expecting this kind of performance. Very costly to miss the 3F again, so I hope Gracie and Frank Caroll reconsider this and just switch it back to the loop. Also, the PCS was overscored again...
6. Ashley: Even with all the big mistakes, it was good to see Ashley still not dropping the performance aspect. But nowadays, no matter how much you sell a program, a bad technical performance will not help your PCS at all. Ashley really needs to start landing her jumps now, or else she'll be in trouble at Nationals and Worlds.
BONUS - Audience: Yes, I'd like to point out that this audience is probably one of the best audiences I have ever seen. Last year's GPF was also at Barcelona and their audience was also spectacular. Almost all competitions in Japan have awesome audiences and 2013 Worlds in Canada also did as well. This audience is now with them on my best audiences list. I love the loud cheers, especially during Satoko's performance!

The scoring was getting off-hand at COR, and by now I want to take some of the competitions this season as big jokes. Whenever these things happen I can't help but think of Akiko Suzuki, who was never credited for her beautiful performances. If Akiko was still skating and had lots of good showings in this season, she'd finally be getting the scores that she deserved. But that will never happen now. In fact, the chances of there ever being a competition without overly unfair results just got smaller. I can't watch the FS too, so when I see the results I really hope that I don't scream.

Ladies quick review

In general, I feel that the result is OK, but that the judges were not consistent enough, again! The boo´s by the crowd are understandable, as you do not have replays or protocols and honestly, I doubt that many saw the edge call of Satoko right when it happened.

FS is just not as understandable as soccer or handball and many were just disappointed that this young Japanese was unable to score as high, as they wanted her to. :drama:

Overall, the best skater has the lead and she does so rightfully by a big margin. Gracie seems to be a bit far behind, but I do not think that she should be too disappointed. Her skate was great, the double is just a little dark spot in an otherwise, brilliant performance.

Evgenia:

She did skate amazingly well and I am so happy she did it, as she was the best lady today - miles in front of all the others. Not even a single error, it was almost perfect and it rightfully received a high score and we do have a well deserved and undoubted champion of the SP.

Many words have been said about her SP, the jumps are in the second half, making it harder than having them all at the start, but it´s not just her jumps and the tano - elements which put FS to a higher level in artistry, but also the aspect of the sport.

No, it is her expression and interpretation, she is very musical and has a good look for the minor details on the ice. Just look how her feet move to the piano sounds, how she comes out of the turns, perfectly aligned to the music, this is really something special and I am happy that we have a few skaters this season, who really skate with the music, creating a unity of skater, choreography, elements and music.

Figure skating, at least for me is about these minor things, about being special and standing out from the masses and this she does in her own way and not after some type of manual. Besides that, I really hate it if people speak bad about a skater, especially her, just because she might not fit those peoples idea of “looks, weight or costuming”. Is it so hard to accept that she is a good skater?

Elena:

Her program was not clean, as she wanted to do a Lutz - toe at the start, but couldn't add the toe, so she had to rework her program and added the element after the loop, again with some problems, but she got away with it and we need to give the young lady credit here, it is quite remarkable to keep your head together, especially if you consider what she went through lately.

As always, she puts a lot into her performances and as I said earlier, she knows how to get these extra points from the judges, as the Lutz was not a -2 by all judges. Compared to Satoko she lost in Execution, as she had two errors and Satoko just one, but I felt that both Satoko and Elena were lucky in the end, compared to Medvedeva who did not have said mistakes, yet only gained about 0,40 on both skaters in Execution.

Not her best skate, but it showed what a young lady she is, a strong mind and very natural – you just have to like this girl. I so look forward to the day when she is fully matured, hopefully she will get the time by her fans and the coaches to really become a woman in her own pace.

Tomorrow she will sail once again, with Jack on the Titanic, and while she will again, not reach New York and Jack finds himself on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, - her expression and passionate skating, will surely reach, everyones heart. :luv17:

Mao:

Axel top, standing ovations from me, also the sexy moves and swing in her hips, great stuff and she absolutely showed how a woman can skate on the ice. Just like Satoko, she is able to slow down for a few seconds, making a hot & sexy move, before she continues - I like that! Ashley and Gracie are able to do this as well, this is again, one of those details that can make the difference.

Said difference to Elena is still there, without wanting to sound disrespectful to the Russian, but Mao and Gracie are just a level higher there, regarding the SS, Footwork and how elements are linked – it looks very fluent and effortless, just look how Mao is at times “hopping” around, it looks like it´s nothing, she let´s the blade go free, it is a joy to see.

But, we also need to be fair and say that besides the Axel, the other jump elements were just not where they need to be to be a champion these days. I felt, coming third, second or fourth would have all been possible results for her – I think she was scored OK, by most judges – but execution, was a bit too high maybe.

Satoko:

I felt, she lost out a bit today. Her program was gorgeous and she really skated with her heads up high, using the music for her elements and expression – good interpretation there, fantastic layback and she looked so cute in her outfit! Wonderful, how she holds eye to eye contact at times and she is really presenting her program and herself as a skater, I like this a lot.

Not sure if this is something people notice, but when you watch her final spin, she actually does rotate in different directions there. While I am not 100%, I believe no other lady has this right now, at least not those who compete for medals and again, just like with Evgenia, we are talking about the small details, that need to be rewarded in PC´s and GOE and here I felt, the judges did hold back, just like with Evgenia. Give skaters what they deserve if they stand out and do not just follow the pattern like everyone else, at least this is my opinion.

A tad closer to Elena´s score, but overall acceptable. The edge call, did cost her the second spot, sadly.

Gracie:

One error and again, people start hating on her, I am so sick of this. She is a phenomenal skater, has so much to give and she is the only skater for me, who really has that special Lady touch for the full duration of her skates, so that she just grabs you with her presence.

Gracie is the only non Russian skater, who understands the importance of using everything she got, while on the ice. Her plus however is, the American way of doing things. Look at her eyes, she is focusing people in the crowd - as she wants to tell them, hey I skate for you now (when she gave me that look ... faint), but ya, you just feel she is really there for you and that is so special and one of several trademarks by the American.

At the same time, she stays in character at all times, does skate into all directions, has a soft blade, good edges and great speed. She can go down on her knees and up again, like it is nothing. Try this at home, try to get up I bet it will either look funny or hard - but she made it look graceful and this on the ice, while in full motion! Big show, young lady!

For me, she should be where Mao is at PC´s, – maybe I am too much a fan of her to see the obvious, but this is how I feel. Again, the kids are amazingly talented – but I just think we need to draw the line there and quite often, Gracie is not being rewarded enough, I just do not understand why the judges and fans not love her as I do. Do they not see what I see? That said, she did beat everyone except Mao (a tie with Evgenia), so it was not too bad, but for me Mao and Gracie should still be up front at PCs.

Tomorrow she strikes back, the firebird will light the fire, in peoples hearts. I believe in Gracie! :yes2:

Ashley:

I just hope she will come back strong tomorrow, today was just not her day I am afraid. Good was, that she did not let go and sold her program until the end. That´s the way to do it!

So to sum up,

the best skater is up front, with a tremendous effort. In general acceptable scores, but not consistent enough and all the girls seemed to enjoy their skates, which is the most important thing for me. Satoko should not be sad, as just as Evgenia, she brings something new to the table and maybe tomorrow, she will climb the podium.
As for Gracie, Ashley and Mao – It is great to see the ladies back on the ice, as much I love the kids, there is just something about woman on the ice, that I like a lot and we need variety, grace and joy on the ice. Well fought Elena, big heart and spirit there is to be found in that talented, Russian skater!

Good luck everyone for tomorrow, heads up Ashley! :ghug:

Why does everyone who doesn't like the US ladies need to be so negative about their consistency? Aren't they happier US ladies aren't beating their faves? It's not like US ladies fans don't know that they're inconsistent! We love their skating anyway! I'm so happy to watch Gracie's programs this season even when there is a pop. The choreography is fantastic and she is really learning to emote. That combined with her skating skills is fantastic to watch.

I have no problem with constructive criticism about performances or how to avoid mistakes, and I frequently dish it out to skaters I love and skaters I don't love. But there's really nothing to be done beating the dead horse of "Americans can't compete." Zijun Li, Alaine Chartrand, Alena Leonova (just a few examples) almost never "deliver" either, but no one is asking "How many years of trying is it going to take??" Should they stop competing because they can't deliver? Or should they just skate their best, whatever their best happens to be that day, and maybe if they keep improving they'll be able to win something?

Mao is so awesome (some may say stubborn, willful, frustrating...) She doesn't strategize on how she can secure a surefire win. She doesn't listen advice from her coach, her team, us anxious fans on how to secure a surefire win. She just knows she wants to go for the most challenging layout. If she falls on 3A, URs the combo, pops the lutz, so be it. She will work harder. She will work on it until she gets it right.

When she's on, even when some of these elements fail, her program is still gorgeous to watch. She gave great eyes, face and energy in this performance not to mention a stellar 3A. I really can't complain.

Not a fan of Medvedeva's score here. Really unbalanced choreography and she doesn't hold the back sit spin position long enough in her combination spin (by the time she gets down into sit position). She should not be getting the level credit there.

Although, I am not there, but I can imagine how those performances will feels watching live and in person. Have watched them all (the 6 ladies in GPF) in person before. And I can understand the "boo" from the audience.
