Joshua Farris

I like this idea, should it be the anniversary of his 4CCs medal? I need to check the date from 2015, but I don't want to do it if it's during the 4CCs this year. If we want to do it I want it to purely be about supporting Josh and not a distraction to the 4CCs that are going on.

How about waiting until Josh has announced on Twitter/Instagram some update about how he is doing - whether he has returned to the ice or what his plans are for next season? The way many people on here are about giving updates about their favorite skaters from social media, I think it would get posted on here pretty soon. :)

For the record I checked the dates: last year's men's free skate was on Feb 13, and this year 4CC doesn't start til Feb 16. But either way works: the anniversary or waiting til the next announcement. I like the idea of Thunderclap, so long as tweets can be scattered over an hour or a half hour, which should help trigger the Twitter trending algorithms, IIRC. We could even get Tumble involved- Josh is ridiculously popular there and those with Twitters could tweet screenshots for those who don't.

Ooo I love the Feb 13th idea. Plus it's close to Valentine's Day but not on the day. Plus I worry if we wait till he posts an update we could be waiting awhile. (deleted part of previous comment)

Just my two cents:

I love Josh, and am happy to see whatever he posts on social media. And I support anyone who wants to send good wishes to him.

But I do not support any ulterior motive of encouraging him to post more frequently on social media.
It is his prerogative to post as infrequently or frequently as he likes.
If he likes to keep a low profile, fine by me.

Apologies if it sounded like there was an ulterior motive as there is not one. I too fully support that it is his prerogative to post as much as he likes. I truly just wanted folks to continue to show our support during his recovery.

Thx for your reply. Glad to know that you and I are on the same page.

(Long before today, I believe I have seen other GS posts [not from you] from people who do love Josh, but who perhaps are not quite ;) on the same page.)

Agreed, which is why I made the suggestion that if we wanted to do encouragement tweets to Josh, we wait until he gives us an update. That way: 1) Because it would be a response to him, he would be more likely to see it, and 2) (More importantly), it still maintains healthy boundaries.

I am a private person. I completely understand why Josh keeps as low of a profile as he does on social media, even though I have wondered if it has hurt him with potentially getting some promotional opportunities. For example, look at how successful the Shibs have been with what they do. But I have also gone on Twitter/Instagram and searched Josh's, Max's, and Jason's accounts and been quite creeped out by some of what I saw. I also think that some skaters (using U.S. Nationals as an example), were a little too focused on posting on social media and maybe should have concentrated more on, well, the competition. But skaters and the usefulness of their social media activity could be it's own thread.

That is a very lovely idea, and I'd like to support it and participate too :) I'm sure it will reach Josh somehow and make him at least a bit happy, and that's what counts.

If you want to get tumblr into this, I have a blog there and yes, Josh is very popular and maybe we could get some people from over there to participate. But it's not a must.

Precisely :) So, what's the consensus, do we think? 4CC anniversary tweets or organize it when an update comes? Anniversary might be easier to organize because it's a known date, but I can see the advantage in context to waiting to get an update.

I like the anniversary date idea the best, but will participate with and support whatever the group decides.

I just keep thinking back to the article last fall where his coach said (paraphrasing) that he really needs the fans support right now, and like the idea of us supporting him (sorta) spontaneously and not necessarily relying on him to tweet first. But I also would not want to cross any boundaries so as said previously I'll support the group decision.

How about this: on the anniversary of his 4CC medal, we try to trend the hashtag #GiveJoshLove or something like that? We set a specific time frame to coordinate tweets to maximize the chances of trending and try to get some of the more widely followed outlets to pick it up- I bet something like TSL would report on its happening.

I approve of this concept!

I don't think it would be crossing the boundaries to do something like this. I also don't think it could be construed as trying to "force" him back onto Twitter, but he might see his phone lighting up with notifications and it might give him a smile.

Like some others here I shudder at what gets directed at my trio regularly. In the last two days alone Max has had at least ten declarations of love, one prom date request, and three marriage proposals - and that's excluding his creepy stalker...but I think as long as we keep it cheerful, upbeat, and on the subject of his skating, it will be something nice.

I'd prefer the 4CC medal anniversary date :) it's easier to coordinate and also has less 'forcing him back on twitter' danger about it, IMO (and I really don't want to give Josh the feeling he has to be more on Twitter, because he obviously doesn't if it's not what he wants).

Alright, seems to be a general consensus. Feb. 13 it is! I'll look into the Thunderclap thing (I'm not quite sure how it works, so if someone else would like to look into that too, go for it!) and I'll reach out on Tumblr as well. Just out of curiosity- and for time coordination's sake- are most of you in North America?

I think as long as it's done within the day, it should be fine that it isn't all at the same time. Unless you are looking for him to have his phone "blow up" mainly once during the day (Who knows if he has mobile notifications to know about chatter about him right away).

It may get better traction if the tweets are spread out rather than mostly at once - I'm not sure that technicals behind how things trend on Twitter or Instagram.

This could work a lot better if Josh had sponsors and they were included on the tweets. Sigh - hopefully those doors can open for him in the future. Assuming (I am choosing to stay positive about this right now) he recovers fully and has a successful monitoring session, I hope USFS then gives him good assignments next season. This would send the message that you can end up out for a season with an injury without it hurting your career if you are able to fully recover.

Today's update: I'm slowly but surely building the word on Tumblr- put together a post and I'm asking some friends who run some of the more widely-followed blogs to pass it along. I also may be able to get in touch with TSL via social media PMs, not necessarily to ask them to show "favoritism" by participating but to alert them that it's happening and maybe they'll report on it.

Anyone who's more savvy than me want to try to put together the Thunderclap thing? Idk if it's necessary but it couldn't hurt, right?

After the news about Nathan Chen's injury, I wonder if Jenny and Dave will have a segment on TSL called #TeamUSMenInfirmary where they give updates that they know on ALL these guys. Ugh, Chen is my favorite U.S. skater, but he does have potential and I hated to see another U.S. man who is down with with an injury.

Has this season really had that many more injuries than others? Or is it that it's happened to so many U.S skaters - especially ones I am a fan of?

Back to Joshua - we still have two weeks to plan this. Does anyone have any ideas on gifs to make to use? I'm trying to think of something original that isn't too hard to make.

More 2014-15 stuff:

- Nathan was injured for quite a bit of the season, IIRC. Was injured going into 2015 Nats. And he had competed at only one JGP that season b/c of injuries.

- Pretty sure that Alex Johnson missed all of the 2014-15 season b/c of injury.

- Lukas Kaugars was out for most or all of the 2014-15 season b/c of injury.
(Can't remember whether he did any early summer 2014 comps, but otherwise he was out for the whole season. And BTW, he did not really start representing Latvia until the 2015-16 season. I think he indicated that he would have competed at autumn 2014 U.S. sectionals if he had not been injured.)

- I believe Keegan Messing was injured too? Went under the radar b/c he was transitioning to representing Canada.

- Not sure, but I seem to recall that Sho Omori was injured for most of the season too.

I think you should try Patrick Commentates Skating. He's a HUGE Josh fan and has quite a lot of followers.

I will start tweeting about it in the next few days.

I don't know how to work the Thunderclap thing though.

EDIT: Oh, and to answer your question - no, I'm in Australia, so mine will likely be one of the first Tweets, when it is the 13th here but probably still the 12th there.

Alas! I just released I can't tweet about it because he follows me, and on the off chance he's reading his Twitter, I don't want to spoil the surprise.

I saw Patrick reblogged your post though, and loves the idea.

Now, about time. IIRC, the men's FS was early evening my time here - which means it would be at a terrible hour for you guys (if my rough maths is approximate). So, it may well be that we will have to come up with another time.

Another thing to consider: We have no idea how well he is doing - although from his last update on his birthday he said he is continuing to get better. I know last summer/fall USFS or maybe Christy Krall said that a full recovery was expected, although that was months ago. Even Papadakis, who won Europeans in ice dance with Cizeron this weekend, was mentioned in an article to still be dealing with headaches. I'm assuming the decision was made to make sure Josh is 100.000000000% healed before even returning to the ice. Hopefully, he is somewhere in the later stages, but we don't know.

I bring this up because Josh may still be limited in how much TV, computer, & phone screen time he can handle in a day. It may because either cause his brain still can't handle it () or it's bad for his progress in whatever therapy or rest he is doing. He may not see all of this campaign or any of it at all.
