Sergei Voronov

I think it's a good choice. It's too bad that he invested the time & money w/Jeff, but it's better to recognize when something isn't working before the whole season is lost. He seemed to have fun & engage the audience much more with the old program. I respect him for wanting to try new things...but Jeff is so busy that I don't think he could really take the time to make sure the programs were a good fit, make adjustments, etc. Anyway, the FS has held him down all season, so I hope this will be a positive change.

Well, I don't think it will have been a total waste - if nothing else I'm sure he's learnt something from trying something new; seeing things from another perspective; even if the new thing in itself didn't turn out to work for him. Anyway, I'm glad the old, fun LP will be back.:)

I think it is a good choice too. Something did not fit him in his new FS.
Let's see how it will work with the "old, fun" one.

I was shocked that he messed up the SP after his pattern this season was to mess up in the FS.:curse: He did fight through the FS after popping his combo, though, so things were not as dire as they could have been. I'm sure he's disappointed...he is in the reserve team for Euros, although it's definitely unlikely he will get to go. He is qualified for the Team Challenge in April, however. Hopefully that will give him a chance for some redemption.

At least it ought to be low-pressure, so we should be able to hope that he can perform the LP with the requisite oomph - give that crazy LP a proper sendoff.:)

Just for fun : Sergei is notorious enough to appear in a small ISU movie promoting the last European championship. And like the others official commercials, this movie was repeatedly broadcasted during the competition.
How to be somewhere even if you are not physically there...

I think he would have had a very high chance of medaling had he been there...sigh. But he will compete this week at the Russian Cup Final.

Starting Order - he skates next to last.

Russian Cup Final - short program results :

Sergei is 3rd (total : 82.51 - TES = 40.76 - PC = 41.75). 1.2 point from the 2nd (Alexander Samarin), and 3.5 points from the 1st (Artur Dmitriev).
Pretty good ! Go on, Sergei ! :cheer2:

So...he finished in 3rd, which isn't too exciting given the level of competition, but the good news is he was 2nd in the FS, only .38 from silver, and 243.97 is still a fairly respectable score. It is a little worrying to see the same errors over & over again, but he said he intends to keep going next season, and I have faith that he can still make improvements. And he is going to be at the Team Challenge Cup, so hopefully that will be a fun low-pressure way to finish this season.

Could someone please translate this interview from yesterday?

Well, he said that he is not happy with his third place, but that it was the right decision to come and compete there, and he is not the one to back off when something doesn't go right, that he was determined to compete and to fight there, and to prove to those who write him off that it's too early for that; though the season was hard and not successful, and there were a lot of obstacles, but in his opinion this would make him more motivated and fierce to fight; he also said that there was an actress (don't know whom he means) who used to raise a toast to her enemies, so he wants to thank his ill-wishers, too, because this only makes him stronger...

So, in general, he sounds unusually pissed off - who has made him so annoyed and who writes him off, I don't know... :confused2:

Thanks, borzaya. I hope he doesn't look at skating forums...certainly, plenty of people try to write him off here (and presumably Russian forums too). Someone new(ish) and promising comes along, and all of a sudden certain people think that the older skaters should just be pushed aside, although that isn't how competition works at all. I'm sure this season was disappointing for him, but it wasn't as if he completely bombed anywhere, either. No Brezina-type meltdowns (sorry Michal). Anyway, I respect him very much for his tenacity and for never giving up.

Thanks borzaya.

You are right, it is very unusual to hear Sergei annoyed up to this point.
But his reaction is easily understandable : hearing people say that he has to stop his career just because he is too old and his season was not really good, and because some younger skaters seem to be more bankable can be really annoying.
Especially as Sergei has still a technical level largely high enough to go on competing with the best skaters, and he can make the public feel something when he is skating which is not the case of most skaters, in particular most of the youngest ones that are not mature enough to try to communicate emotions with the public or to interpret the music they are skating on. (sorry to say that, but emotionaly speaking nearly 90% of the skaters currently competing make me feel the same thing as if they were brooms... I know, that's not kind of me, but that's realistic ! )

Talking about Sergei's age, well, hearing is "too old" is really irritating : of course, he is older than the average age of the skaters currently competing. So WHAT ? If he is still in a mood for competing and if his body allows him to go on competing, what is the problem ?

I just realize that I could just say the same for Konstantin Menshov, but it is not the good page...

And if skaters had to stop skating just because they don't please someone, there would'nt be many skaters currently competing ! Just look at this forum : can you just find one skater that can please everybody ??

Thanks, borzaya. I hope he doesn't look at skating forums...
Except this page ? ...

Anyway, I respect him very much for his tenacity and for never giving up.
so do I.
