Who will break Yuna Kim's record and when?

You cursed Evgenia to have a meltdown, but I'm telling you she will not have a meltdown like Kim had at her first worlds. And indeed, many viewers find Kim's WR skate unacceptable, so Kim's WR is indeed an uncomfortable WR.

Huh? Now I'm really confused. When did I "curse" her? You talked about fact in your post, so I'll say this: it's a fact that ice is slippery. It's a fact that people can have off-days. Anything can happen. I was only saying that there is a possibility of a meltdown, not a meltdown being very likely. And people can say that about any athlete. Experienced or inexperienced, young or old, consistent or inconsistent. I apologize that you were offended by me pointing out possible events, as maybe my word choice was too excessive. But no way am I "cursing" her.

This also links to how you keep saying Evgenia WILL win Worlds, WILL have a WR, WILL not have a meltdown, etc. Why not at least add the word "probably" before "will"?

Overscored but still a WR performance at the time. I doubt anyone can argue that.
Maybe deserving to win the event but not deserving the WR.
People take issue with the judging and the direction of the sport. Forgive us if, in the process of explaining this, we have to point out Medvedeva's scores and flaws. That doesn't make us hateful. Everyone acknowledges her talent and potential.
Yes, people take issue with the judging and the improved direction of the sport. In the process of explaining this, people point out Kim's scores and flaws. That doesn't make anyone Kim haters. That's not "bringing down" Kim either.

It WAS deserving of a WR score, but it should've been a lower WR score. No performances before that LP deserved it more. I would agree that there are better programs since Vancouver (including Kim's own 2013 skate) but the rule changes have prevented any of them from getting 150.

You haven't explained the 'improved direction the sport'. You've only gone to lengths to diminish the legacies, impact, and abilities of other great skaters, and have done so without true facts.

If it was a lower WR then Adelina would have broken the WR.

Kim got +1.4 GOE on easy jumps e.g. 3S and 2A at 2010 Olympics. That was ridiculously high for 3S and 2A. The rule change lowered the GOE values of easy jumps so her 2A of same quality got only +0.79 GOE in 2014. That's an improved direction of the sport, and that's probably due to Kim's overscoring in 2010.

All true. And yet, this has nothing to do with the current judging problems being discussed here.

Mao breaking it in Seoul during 2018 Olympics would be beyond epic!!

Evgenia is still young, but she will achieve something Kim, Asada etc. was unable to achieve: Evgenia will win gold at her first worlds with world record score. I still remember how Kim and Asada bombed at their first worlds. :disapp:

I don't know about you, but setting WR scores for the short and long programs at their first worlds doesn't count as a bomb. The funny thing is, if she wins- so what? the gods might crap out on her and wipe her out the next season. She could be the next flash in the pan!

LOL. NicoleH's comment just makes me

If Yu-na's and Mao's first Worlds debut (Yu-na WR in the SP, Mao WR in the FS, both medalling) are counted as a bomb, Gold and Wagner are considered complete failures. Don't forget Tuktamysheva and Sotnikova as well, finishing 9th and 10th at their first Worlds.

It doesn't take a historian, only an honest fan of this sport. It behooves a poster to verify before claiming to be so certain X can't do Y, or when making any assertion for that matter. It's irresponsible and spreads misinformation to do otherwise.

But not verifying is not the same as lying. I also think it's a little strong to say a post on a skating forum about whether a skater can do a Biellmann is irresponsible.

I don't think any ladies records will be broke this year. I do think Medvedeva will skate well and score in the high 140's and I believe the other medalists will also top 140 in the long. Here's to hoping they all hold it together!

But well, i would actually have fun if a russian lady breaks that record on next olympic games.
Would be specially fun if Adelina regains her jumps and wins her second Oly gold like that, but thats not so likely.

In the case of that happening the silence greeting that performance from a good portion of the attending audience would be deafening considering where it would take place. If nothing else, it would certainly be a boon for the forums here and elsewhere in the figure skating community.

I just rewatched Yuna's legendary performance again, thanks to this post.. I was at TEB 2009 when she first revealed this program, and I cannot forget about that moment ever; She was literally FLYING across the ice! Her jumps were gigantic, spins were lovely; music cut, presentation (her smile! her arms!), choreography, even her dress, everything was wonderful.. I still remember that my friends around me whispered that 'why do we even have a competition? She is simply in the league of her own!' after first 2 minutes passed. Yuna has been always my favorite skater, but that was when I truly became her big fan. And in the Olympics, she was even better! Oh lord.. THIS truly deserves to be one of the best ever (if not the best), and truly deserves to hold WR for a long time... Even though I did not expect that this will still hold WR considering immense score inflation for last couple of years.

It seems that this performance set the bar high enough to produce this kind of thread. I pretty much felt the same way when young girls are given PCS 70 like candy nowadays, but it seems that there will be no 'going back' and I am giving up on this issue. I do not think that scores reflect true quality of the performance anyway. (think of how often scores over 140 were given this season, while Yuna was the only one who could do so (twice) from the beginning of COP era to 2013 (a decade...)! But are these performances necessarily better than top-notch performances (with less than 140) produced upto 2013 season? I really don't think so...)

Will WR be broken? Yes. When? Maybe in near future, before 2018 Olympics, considering that scores, especially PCS, are given much more generously than before. Who will break it? I don't know. Not UR-ing Mao perhaps but that person does not exist this season. Will I care? I will try to watch that performance for sure hoping that I would not get disappointed too much, but frankly, I wouldn't care too much. I just hope that the person whoever breaks WR can stay long enough to produce true masterpieces for FS and fans, that's all.
