When did Gracie Gold become a "great champion"?

Holy Cow!! Really?? Well, I used to hear this all the time from Michelle fans when I'd talk about...You know who. Here's the thing. For the US, Gracie is probably the strongest technical skater we've had since a perfect Tonya. She's certainly a better jumper than Tara and Michelle were. What Gracie needs is mental strength. After she won her first title, I expected her to be at the top for quite a while. Well, she had her title for one season before giving it back to Ashley. Now that she's regained her title, I'd love to see her defend it for at least a season. I mean, didn't Michelle win every title from 98 until 2005?

As for Tara, Her Titles make her a legend but her competitive career was quite short and completely over before she turned 18.

That's awfully nit-picky. We could also say Mirai jumps a 2A big to compensate for the fact that she cannot 'tano the jump. The judging system does not mandate big jumps, and a skater can get strong +GOE marks without height if other features are present.

Stupid point Mirai jumps a big 2A because she has a good axel technique & athleticism for that not because she cannot do tanos, lol. Either way Evgenia's double axel is not good but not as awful as some make it to be (not Lipnitskaya or Glebova sort of terrible).

The point is that height is but one jump characteristic that makes it "good" from a GOE perspective. Evgenia does not do 'tanos because she doesn't jump big, she does it to accumulate +GOE features. At the GPF SP, Evgenia got GOE scores between +1 and +3 for her 2A, so I'm not sure how it's a "weakness".

I disagree. Tukts win deserved - well, she was clearly better than Radio and Satoko.
Satoko may have programs, but i suppose an athlete needs jumps to win in this sport.

This is a strange statement to make since Evegnia gets strong marks from almost every judge at every event. I never understood people who think entire judging panels are cheating yet still call themselves fans. Why would you even watch the sport?

Maybe because we are fans of a skater(s), not the judges. Bad judging is not going to make us stop watching or being fans of our favorite skaters.

Only if Satoko gets her triple axel. Seriously, Liza won Worlds with her short program last year. No one was going to beat her after that. I love Satoko, but she is never going to score a 78 or whatever Liza got, good program or not.

Either way this jump is her weak point, she can mess IT up like she did in Europeans in LP. Either way she also gets higher technical BV for it with tanos if I am not wrong? (highlighted execution) + bonus for that 2A in 2nd half.

I think she compensated for her lack of flexibility and pointed toe in her spirals by having speed and control. Credit also to David Wilson who always found a way to put it in the right place musically where it has the most impact. Just another example of how her team worked around her weaknesses.

You specifically said she won't get 78 points, even with a 3A. What was the point of brining that up? I said nothing about that, and my response was to general comments saying that they can't see Satoko as WC with her small jumps. People are complaining that Satoko would be world champion with her small jumps, yet aren't giving the same criticism to Tukt who had horrible programs, little transitions, and poor spins.

It is not meant to be an insult or anything but Yuna was not flexible. Yulia is an exception but even amongst a lot of figure skaters Yuna is/was not flexible. Compared to me? Yes very flexible but let's not go that far. I think Yuna's team did a stellar job to highlight her strengths.

^When I think of not flexible, I think of Anna Pogorilaya and Carolina Kostner. Kim's flexibility was fine.

Yuna was flexible but chose not to bend that far back in her layback when she returned to preserve her back. A couple of decimal point difference isn't worth a lifetime of injury.

She just wasn't as flexible as Yulia, Mao, or Satoko. The skater who I think is not that flexible is Liza Tuk.
