Who will break Yuna Kim's record and when?

Let me answer to the big question first: Mao will break the WR. Sooner or later. Now I would like to respond to some of the points brought up in this thread.

3Lz+3T vs 3A+2T: Yes a lutz is a very difficult jump because of its tricky take-off pattern, thus a 3Lz+3T is a very challenging combo and skaters should be rewarded a high BV. But that doesn't mean the combo should receive the same, or even more BV than a 3A combo. 3A itself is already an extremely difficult element that not many elite male skaters can execute it properly, don't even mention putting it in a combo. And the Theory of number of Rotation proposed by the OGM Scott Hamilton is unfortunately utter bs. If it is really what he said, then should all 3+3 have the same value as a 4+2? He should be ashamed of it.

The score itself: I am thankful to the poster who converted the score by using today's formula, because I haven't been completely convinced by that score. I would agree with a score NO MORE than 145 for that skate (and also for Les Mis). Her jumps were better than perfection and I agree on that, but the choreography and interpretation of her Gershwin and Les Mis are really not as good as they turned out to be. It makes me feel like the program is Opening-back crossover-jumps-crossovers-jumps-steps-crossovers-jumps-choreo movt-crossover-transition-jumps etc.. There were not much musical movement and commitment in the programs (unlike her Homage to Korea and Adios Noninos where she relates to the music SOOO well). Anyway that is just my personal feeling, please don't take it too seriously.

I've been at this a long time and I still don't know what a "Hammer Toe" is. Does anyone have a clip that show's a good example of what it is? Thanks in advance.

I think "hammer toe" is a mistranslation or misapplication of a synonymous term. In English, a hammer toe is a podiatric condition of the toe. It has nothing to do with skating. The term that has been used for the flexed foot in skating is mallet foot. For mallet, think croquet mallet. It is a stick with a right-angled piece of wood at the bottom used to hit croquet balls. The right angle reminds some of the flexed foot.

Flexing your knee isn't the same thing as "hammer toe." Generally skaters do hammer toe to begin rotation sooner and sacrifice air time. But it isn't like Yuna had small jumps. Harding, and Tuk for instance don't flex the knee and have famously huge jumps, but then they have other issues with their jumping such as air position, controlled landings, and flow. So you can nitpick technique, but at some point it becomes of a question of "this could be even better" not "this is flawed." You have to measure criticisms against what the skater is achieving.

Well they have to nitpick on any and every flaw they can find to justify not liking her skating, her scores, or wins because really, what can you say? The girl never had a competition where she had a complete meltdown (she always came in 1st in either the SP or FS if not both), she made mistakes but never let it derail the rest of her program or competition, she placed top 3 at EVERY competition at senior level (while competing with the likes of 2-time World Champion Miki Ando, 3-time World Champion and silver Olympic medalist Mao Asada, World Champion and silver Olympic medalist Carolina Kostner, and World and Olympic medalist Joannie Rochette). She did not seem to have had as much issues with the puberty monster that most female skaters faced, she was able to make comebacks despite long breaks and injuries and jut show up to major international competitions without looking too rusty. So yeah all this hair pulling about her lack of flexibility and to really just throw the kitchen sink...her jumps are not all that great like people say.

> silver Olympic medalist Carolina Kostner

You mean bronze? Or do you mean the 'actual' results :rofl2:

I think soon it will be replaced by other skater, since scores are so much inflated last couple years. However, yuna kim's skating skills and performances are just in another level

I have a question for anyone who has seen Yuna perform live. As great as she was, I never thought she had good spirals. Her back leg never seemed to be fully extended and she didn't have very good turnout. I thought this was weird because there were other elements, like her final combination spin that showed she had good flexibility and all of her programs had great style and choreography.

wondering, the live performance effect of Yuna's spirals
these 2 live cam is for you. notice Audience's AWW while she is doing spiral sequence. Enjoy :)!

One of the most impressive skater to watch live! Not only speed, but also whole body movement amplitude. That's Yuna's thing!:o:

I think she compensated for her lack of flexibility and pointed toe in her spirals by having speed and control. Credit also to David Wilson who always found a way to put it in the right place musically where it has the most impact. Just another example of how her team worked around her weaknesses.

It will be an insult if one of these Russian girls with all their bad habits and weaknesses beat Yuna's record. Putin must had made some generous "donations" to the judges to give these girls some of the scores that they have gotten over the last 3 years.

Mrrice's figure skating "wife" is Maria Butyrskaia -- meaning that he was captivated by her mature artistry on the ice.

I can't believe I just saw this but....................You're totally right!!!!!!!!:points:

Evgenia has only one weakness, her flutz. There is no other aspect of skating in which she is below average, or even average.

Zhenia, and the Koreans explode.

I do wonder though how Koreans will react if Russian girls get 1-2-3 in the podium of Pyeongchang?
