2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

? None of the above skated to Queen's Under Pressure, so I am not seeing how that applies.

Nor has anyone else, to my knowledge. So I am curious to see how it goes, exactly because I have not seen it used before. That was my only point.

No music choice will please everyone.

Oh I was just replying to why a team may consider using a warhorse with examples of teams that didn't and were very successful with choosing music that's off the beaten path. In Chock and Bates case they are simply doing what they always do. Chock and Bates didn't pick a "wow" piece, that's non-warhorse like you see with Papadakis, they simply picked a bad piece of music... Again.

Can you clarify what you mean by "a bad piece of music"? Bad to you, or by some other criteria?

Skaters don't arbitrarily pick music, and I doubt that Chock and Bates picked an obviously risky choice without the blessing of the brilliant *Olympic Champion* Christopher Dean. I think he has a better idea of what is appropriate for them, and what the judges will like, than we posters on Golden Skate. Furthermore, two world medals in the past two years, as well as medals at GPF and 4CC over the past two seasons speaks VERY highly of their ability to put together competitive programs.

And what I'm saying is in spite of their bad music choices, in the past they still did ok (although probably would have done better with better music) But this is no longer the time for that. They are digging a deficit for themselves before even stepping on the ice. V/M is coming back, teams are improving and they have lost ground. And let's be honest with ourselves here. They got bronze because worlds was in the U.S. They do not have the luxury of playing Frankenstein with their music choices this year. If I'm reading correctly, Dean choreographed and picked the Music for Giles and Porier too, no? Gimmicky, gadgety Giles and Porier?

Again, we've yet to define what a "bad music choice" is. Also, I would say two world medals, regardless of where the competition was held, is much better than "okay" (And I would also say that the judges certainly didn't hand them the bronze medal this year, seeing that they gave Cappellini and Lanotte a 112 in the group that went before them). So I think I'm done here, because there's not an actual argument going on based on facts, or anything debatable. I love me some Chock and Bates. Cheers.

There's no argument period. I'm simply stating what I'm seeing (and hearing) right in front of me. And regarding your asking what's a bad music choice". I think I answered that in a post some time ago. In my opinion a bad music choice is a piece of music that contributes nothing to the program. No emotion, no buildup, no excitement... It's just kinda there playing in the background. I have disagreed with most of their music choices in the past, but this one I absolutely loathe.

I can hardly wait to see the new FD from Chock and Bates. At first I was a bit apprehensive because rock music and skating don't always mix well. Then I listened to "Under Pressure" and realized there is a lot to work with there. There's the irresistible hook in the bass line--dum dum dum da da da dum....dum dum dum da da da dum.... And the recurring chime like notes. What instrument is that? A piano? Thinking in terms of their last two exhibition programs, I can see this music working very well for Maddie and Evan.

Me too!

If you want to know why teams might choose warhorses, look to this severe criticism of Chock and Bates for using Queen's Under Pressure.

I have never seen a program done to that music, so of course I am looking forward to it!

THANK YOU!!! Like the thing is we're being hypocritical with music choices. For me, since a few years ago, I've been inspired to look for more unorthodox skating music that would work, so Under Pressure is one that I'm excited about. Like REALLY excited. Like if some people become a little more open-minded and listen to the beat and tune of the song, that's what determines it.

I was delighted to hear somebody finally pick the music by Queen. That was one of my wish list because the song can be very challenging but also refreshing at the same time. Depending on how well they interpret the song, I can finally get to like the team. I can't wait to see the program to be disclosed. :)

Your definition of "bad music choice" is an opinion, an opinion that many of us disagree with. You might not be happy with the choice but please don't use it as a means to define their next competitive season and some sort of figure skating high ground by telling us you'll come back to say "I told you so". Frankly, that is a very immature perspective on figure skating.

Let us be open minded and support non-traditional music choices. Now I think you've done enough polluting of this topic. Let us get back to hearing about what other (possibly unconventional) music choices other teams are skating to!

Plus there is the added bonus of David Bowie!!! Unless they use some other version of the song :scowl:

Exactly! Like if someone chose Justin Bieber music (And I absolutely DESPISE Justin Bieber. Poor attitude.), I'll let them choose what they want. Or any unconventional song for that matter. Well except for music programs cut like Jorik Hendrickx's FP. Yeah.......

The key thing is how the skater(s) skate to it. There was one skater on the JGP this season who skated to "Grease Lightning" but it was so blah because the speed and didn't match the atmosphere the song gives off. Like if someone with more pep and speed skated to it, then mwahhhh *kiss noise* it would have been better.

I just think it's odd someone thinks Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" has no highs and lows or emotional impact. I felt it when I first heard it when I was just a kid, and I certainly feel it now that I'm an adult juggling everything and trying to live up to expectations I set for myself and what society and family has put on me. I really look forward to seeing what Chock/Bates with Christopher Dean has to offer us, and I'm saying this as a huge Shibs fan (though loving one team isn't mutually exclusive from liking/loving the other).

There's a reason why that song has resonated with so many throughout the decades and is used in many films as a mood setting piece.

De gustibus non est disputandum. :)

And all that jazz.

And rap.

And emo.

And r&b.

And folk.

And hip hop.

And

And

And

I love under pressure...and I love Queen, but I have yet to be totally satisfied with any of the Queen programs I've seen so far. The more I like a song or piece of music, the more demanding I am that the skater lives up to it.

So true, but I'm bored with the current trend of skaters' selecting repetitively overused conventional warhorse music, so any trial to make something new is welcomed by me. :)

I think I trust Dean and am just excited Chock/Bates are moving away from unconvincing lust/romance territory and opening themselves up to another theme. I think Evan hasn't had the opportunity to explore his musical chops and Chock, with better direction and teaching her to dial it back a bit, has the potential to really give us something great.

Agree 117%. Both of them can act so that's a bonus. Stretch those boundaries you crarayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyzyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy kids!

I would love The ShibSibs to skate to Talking Heads' Once in a Lifetime, but I'm not going to throw an online hissy fit if they don't.

We American ice dance fans are really lucky. With our top three teams, it's almost like the Soviets circa 1989-1992.
