Many fans think Kobayashi's statement is to "force" Yuzuru to compete at Asian games in order to sell tickets. But if JSF's intention is to sell tickets, why don't they "force" Mao to compete at Asian games? Yuzuru is not going to sell tickets of the ladies' event. Mao is not likely to win national given her recent performances.

Every rule maker knows rewarding the loser more than the winner distorts the incentives and will bring undesirable outcomes. JSF is not going to make a rule that national champs MUST compete at Asian games. JSF can't tell the public that they will send their B or C team to Asian games when Japan is the host. Honestly, I think Kobayashi's statement is just a way for JSF to justify sending their B team to Asian games because they already told the public that they will try their best to send their A team but their A team has the option to choose 4CC and skip Asian games because 2017 4CC is the Olympic test game.

Beside, I don't think Yuzuru will win national next season. The Japanese national will be in Osaka next season. When 4CC was in Osaka in 2013, Yuzuru only got silver in a weak field. When NHK was in Osaka in 2014, Yuzuru was off podium. He has a history of under-performing in competitions held in Osaka.

I don't think its fair to predict that. At 4CC he wasnt as good. He only got 4th at worlds that year. (I think its just the programs but well). Then in NHK he was still injured after the collision. We can't blame that. He was still in recovery. Had he been healthier who knows how much better he wouldve done. Then you think Shoma is going to be National champion? He wasn't exactly at his best at this years nationals either what with the emergency quad and all (tho his short was fantastic) who else could be national champion? Maybe Mura if he gets himself together and yuzuru really bombs. Even if yuzuru performs "badly" he might still win depending on the cost of the mistake and how well other people do. Japan's men's field is certainly arguebly the strongest but honestly, without Yuzuru there these days (plus no machida and dai and kozuka too)..its not that strong. So the point is that you never know and its unfair to yuzuru that your writing him off as national champion this early when he's been national champion 4 times, as many times as javis been european champion. And arguably, japan nationals is as hard as europeans if not harder.

There are many times he wasn't physically in good condition but delivered good performances. I don't think his past sub-par performances were due to poor physical conditions, but were due to sub-par mental conditions. (I definitely don't think his sub-par performances were due to his programs. Programs are not correlated with execution of the programs.) I think his mental condition is easily affected by his surroundings and the location of the competitions (maybe he is too sensitive). Given his past record, if he doesn't perform well in certain countries/cities, he just never does well in those countries or cities regardless of his physical conditions. (If he does well in certain countries/cities, he always does well in the same countries/cities, regardless of his physical conditions.)

It's better to lose national than to lose GPF, 4CC or WC. National is the least important competition of all.

Shoma almost won national last year if he didn't change his plan in the last minute. He only lost because his BV wasn't high enough due to the pop. He will try 4F in both SP and LP next season. So his BV will be a lot higher. I think it's better for fans to be prepared that it's very likely that someone will beat Yuzu at national one day and not be surprised or outraged if that does happen.

Tbh I think this is a little bit too superstitious. 2010 Nats in Nagano Yuzuru came 4th, but then in 2014 (also in Nagano) he placed 1st. Similarly, he placed 2nd in the GPF held in Sochi, but then as we all know went on to the win Gold at the Sochi Olympics. Of course he can't be National Champion forever, but should he lose I'm not about to blame it on location. He expressed multiple times that he felt uncomfortable competing in Spain as he was so used to the style of a Japanese crowd, yet he won two years in a row...

Eh i dont think its unlikepy for someone to beat yuzuru one day. Of course he will be beaten he's already been veaten by Javi twice at would championships and yes, one day shoma may beat him. But we can be sure to write him off at nationals. Shomas triple axel and quad flip jump landings are not very clean and yuzuru also has a new quad for this season so why should we assume shoma will beat him at this nationals when yuzuru is still first in the world.
We'll have to agree to disagree but I think that mental sensitivity and nerves aren't all to do with place. Yuzuru looked so ready to win worlds at boston this year but in the free skate he crumbled, don't think it was because of the place since he did superb in the short program but well everybody's entitled to their opinion (still...i believe in yuzuru ahhaa of course one day he won't be as good anymore like plushenko, but as fans, we'll always wish him the best, yes?) Although i think winning Japanese nationals in singles is a very great honour but yeah id rather have him win worlds :) we'll just end it here

I didn't mean good result is getting gold all the time. Whether his result is good depends on his skills and depth of field at the time of competitions. In 2010, he just turned senior and he was a newbie. 4th was the best result he could achieve at national at that time because there were veteran skaters who had better skill than him. In 2012-2013 season, 2nd at GPF was the best result he could achieve given his skills and the depth of field at GPF. But in a weaker field like 4CC (top skaters often skip 4CC), 1st is the best result he could get. When he improves his skill further, 1st should be the best result he can achieve even in a deep field.

Not everyone is affected by the location of competitions. But Yuzuru is affected by location a lot more than other skaters.

Most of the fans at 2014 GPF and 2015 GPF are Yuzuru's fans from Europe and Japan.

Sorry, I wasn't talking about you. When Yuzuru won national in 2012, many of Takahashi's fans were very angry/outraged. They didn't act very friendly to Yuzuru at that time. This coming season's national is exactly 4 years after 2012. The timing is the same as the 2012 national, one season before the Olympics. If JSF wants to boost Shoma and market him as a medal contender at the next Olympics, they would want Shoma to win national next season. (Yuzu plans to retire after the Olympics, I assume JSF wants to promote Shoma as the next star.) The judging at the most recent national is certainly paving the path for that. (The current judging at international competitions is a joke. The judging at nationals is a bigger joke.)

I don't think Japanese national champion is a big title. It doesn't carry much weight internationally. The judging at Japanese nationals don't get carried over to international judging either. (I personally don't care if Yuzuru wins or loses national.) If Yuzu loses national deservingly or undeservingly, I hope Yuzuru's fans act more rationally.

I agree with all your statements but I have the impression that for the Japanese skaters, Japan Nationals is a big thing. I think I watched a documentary and one of the skaters said that or a commentator or something.

I believe Yuzu will aim for a National Title again and again before he retires given his attitude and in case 2012 event repeats, I hope everyone, the fans and Yuzu himself will be able to accept it without doubts and regrets. :)

I think Japanese skaters see Japanese national as a big thing. I was saying as a fan, I don't see Japanese national as a big deal. I won't be upset if he loses national. If Yuzu loses national, I think he would be more motivated to win the next competition. :)

Right, aha, being a National Champion does not mean anything either to the winner, nor to his country, nor to the Team assignments, nothing...:popcorn: I'm not sure if you try and think about it from his own point of view because he is Japanese. And as much as we all would like him to become more of an international or western kind of thinking person he will never be like that. He was raised with a different mentality and different values. And his all life in sport proves that. He is Japanese. You can't ask him to be any different, act different, think different. His values is what his all well-being is based on. He will never lose intentionally to anyone. He will try and bring best performance and best BV whenever he can. And yes, I remember about Shoma's new quad. You can't base your predictions simply on BV because what matters is an actual performance and not an astimated plan. That was proved in figure skating throughout the years.
You want to see him fading- well, that is your desire. I want to see him fighting at the top of his lungs, I want to see him flourish even more because I believe that there is a potential for growth still there in him.

We are rejoicing that he finally able to be one ice after battling injury, my immediate concern is for him to take it slow and steady. We don't even know what is going to happen tomorrow let alone thinking of a competition 6 months down the road :rolleye:
