2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Not happy about Mirai's choice. I don't like Beatles and Abba programs, cover versions or originals. There were a few Beatles programs that did the music justice and matched the mood and beat, like Gilles/Poirier or Rippon, but haven't seen one for Abba music yet. IMO most of it isn't suited to gliding, stroking, jumping and spinning, and I can't imgine a program that would match the beat of a song like Winner Takes It All. I didn't like Butyrskaya's version, I doubt I'll like Mirai's but we'll see.
On a positive note, still no Phantoms confirmed. That's good news as far as I am concerned.

The version of The Winner Takes All Mirai is skating to is a bit softer and more emotional than the ABBA version. She's skating to Sarah Dawn Finer's version - look it up, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

I personally think that version is over-sung and therefore overdoes the emotion, but Mirai likes it and that's all that matters. I know if the music inspires her, then it'll come through in her performance.

I know that. I'm suprised so many teams are choosing hip-hop instead of swing as the second rythm.

I think if a team doesn't choose hip hop they will be seen as taking the "easy way out" and not challenging themselves with new things. A lot of top teams like Virtue/Moir and Weaver/Poje have been working hard and performing hip hop inspired exhibitions all summer, Papadakis/Cizeron have been seen taking dance classes and Chock/Bates also have the potential to pull it off really well. If they can make it work next season and bring something fresh and new to Ice Dance then any team who didn't do hip hop could be seen at a disadvantage.

:rolleye: Punditry didn't do anyone any good in the SD last season. Choose the music that goes well with your Blues and allows you to maximize your own strengths. Or you'll wind up scrapping it, just like W&P and C&B did right at the beginning of last season. Or reworking it at the last minute like Gilles & Poirier. Or sitting home like Ilinykh & Zhiganshin.

I think it is good that there are going to be a variety of hip hop selections. If there are, we should actually have a real comparison.

But just because teams are doing exhibitions or practicing a style doesn't mean those teams are selecting the music for competition. (In fact, if you are doing it for exhibition, it could be an excuse not to use it in competition or a trial run to see if it will work for you). I believe we currently have @5 senior teams confirming hip hop (Cannuscio & McManus, Hawayek & Baker, Hubbell & Donahue, Lauriault & Le Gac--not confirmed, but it seems to fit their music, and Stepanova & Bukin) and @4 senior teams confirming swing (Coomes & Buckland, Gilles & Poirier--this was posted hearsay, Paul & Islam, and Zahorsky & Guerreiro).

(I hope a smart person will listen to the music and identify it for the thread.)

It sounds like an instrumental of "Writing on the Wall," the Sam Smith theme from James Bond's Spectre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkRyn0JNTco

But that's only a guess -- the clip is so short it could be anything.

Rika Hongo's new short I believe:

I'm reserving judgement until later by the grand prix....she has to grow into this program imo

BTW this youtuber has uploaded many videos including exhibitions/programs including Rika, Satoko, Evgenia, Wakaba, Marin, Takahiko Mura, and another girl that I don't recognize. Just a temporary cure to off-season boredom before summer comps get into full swing!

Satoko Miyahara

SP: La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini
LP: Star Wars OST & Jupiter from The Planets suite by Gustav Holst

It is obviously not for exhibition. Very unusual choice of music for competition program.

It will be a mixture of several "cosmos atmosphere" pieces. It is choreographed by Tom Dickson, who made great programs for her in the past seasons, Firedance and Miss Saigon.

I'm looking forward to seeing the work soon as I love the two programs very much.

"I Put a Spell On You" .... is that the best music you can find? it's so annoying now.

I agree. It's not that hard to find music that has been rarely been skated to, I don't see why skaters/choreographers seemingly can't do that.

We need new choreographer blood as well. The top ones today did their job but i think this sport can go even farther.
Understandable though because ice skating is not so popular.

I agree with you, but I have to point out that she MUST ditch the last Y spin of the final spin combo, that would bring negative GOE.

I completely agree about that last y spin! It should be taken out if it's still rocky by the Grand Prix
