However, like Virtue/Moir's innovative Carmen, she can surprise us with a "different" choreography.

According to Kana's interview after 4CC, during the last two years, she skated to the music she chose for herself. But she realized that what she likes don't necessarily suit her, so this year she will leave music choice completely to her coach. I think Carmen and Tosca suit her. Her coach has made a conservative but safe choice.

But safe choices don't always mean that they're good ones. She already has a lot to do to catch up to the other skaters, and not just her Japanese teammates. So, I hope she'll manage to be original with both choreo, so that she'll stand out.

Sorry for being pessimistic, but I actually don't have much hope for her now. I almost feel that she is a lost case with so many technical flaws and I don't see any of her effort during this off-season (besides eating ice creams...). Well, I understand that she is not the type of skaters who frequently post her training video or photos, but I just got the feeling that she is not making progress in any aspect during all these years.

Speaking about choreo, honestly, I just don't understand why she sticks with the same choreographer for years... The programs she has for season 12-13 by Marina Zueva are outstanding. I hope she can work with her again one day.

Well, I don't believe in a great come back for her, but the thing with Kanako is that I'm not sure what are her plans for the next years. Is 2018 even her goal? She may just want to continue just for the pleasure of skating and, thus, don't feel like doing changes. I suppose we may learn more once the season start.

Me either. I have absolutely no idea of her career plan. Unlike other girls who just speak out their ambitions and show everybody their training progress, she doesn't talk much about her plan and she seldom share training footage. Probably she doesn't even have a plan. She seems like those people with a take-it-easy attitude and that is what I am mostly upset about. Her technique doesn't improve during the last 6 years. No new jump combo, no new spin for 6 years. How is that even possible? I don't really care about the score, but at least I hope she can have some attitude and show us even the slightest of change.

Sometimes, I wish she can just retire instead of going out to competition and every time ending up with a disastrous LP. That really hurts. I even decided not to watch her compete this season to avoid disappointment. I am really sorry for saying such negative things. I wish her all the best. She is no matter what a lovely girl with the most pleasing nature and personality. But I just can't stand one disappointment after another and not seeing any of her plan or effort to strike back. A hard time for Kana fans.

This season at Nationals she finished 6th but it was like she had accepted the thought that she wouldn't be able to make the podium and I saw no traces of regret. I mean, she's never been super competitive from the beginning, choosing to stay with her old coaches who couldn't fix her jump issues in the long run and didn't raise the base value. But now it's like she gave up on having goals and aiming higher. She probably won't mind not making the Olympic team.

Sometimes I just hate to see her smile and shrug her shoulders after a bad performance. I wish in could more regretful or even angry face from her because that shows she still cares and still has fire and desire for better inside her. Maybe she chose not to retire because she likes the pleasure of skating and performing, but I see no point of staying in the competition if she lost competitive mind.

I don't think so. I'm not sure if I remember correctly so I may be wrong, but back in 2010 or 2011 Kanako got an offer to start training overseas just like Yuzuru. But unlike Yuzuru, she didn't want to leave her country. I also don't think she is short of financial support because she has several sponsors. She's been in commercials. It seems that their skaters are forever content with staying there ignoring the fact that their coaches are not helping them much. Not only Kanako and Shoma, but also Mao and Taka... If team Yamada truly cares about their students, they should persuade their students to be brave enough to leave their comfort zone and go overseas for more capable coaching team.

We'll see what happens with Shoma. I think he is SLIGHTLY (joking here) more competitive than Kanako, and he certainly wasn't satisfied with a 7th place at Worlds. I am beginning to think he will go overseas, but I'm not sure who would be a good fit for him. His team might not have a plan for him, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have his own plan...Was Kanako out for awhile with injuries? I can't remember.

He has a lot more competitive fire than Kanako, and hopefully we will soon see the results of his training with Coach Alex.

Wasn't Mao coached by Raf, and many have gone overseas for choreography.

Yeah, but they eventually settle down with coach Sato at Chukyo and then their skating became stagnating... Don't know what will happen when it comes to Shoma. Since he has already enrolled in Chukyo U, it will be difficult for him to train overseas for long term. But I do hope he managed to go after all he is much more competitive than Kanako.

Kanako has never been out. She got injured last year and only resumed regular training in September but she didn't miss any competition.

He does. But so did Kanako in her early senior years. What I pointed out was his decision to stay with the Yamada camp.

We think we know his plans, but I don't think we do at all. My guess is that they're trying to figure out at what point do they turn the entire family life upside down and go overseas. Even when U.S. skaters relocate from east to westcoast USA,it's a big decision let alone coming from another country. Seems to be necessary tho if you want to meet your goals.

Even when U.S. skaters relocate from east to westcoast USA,it's a big decision let alone coming from another country. Seems to be necessary tho if you want to meet your goals.

I'm guessing since he's a Chukyo University student, it's going to be harder to relocate in the near future. Yuzuru is taking online classes at Waseda and Tatsuki left Kansai University for more than a year to move with Anthony Liu in the US.
