Skating stories that would make good films

I don't think anything could be more dramatic than Kerrigan/Harding, no?

Plushenko vs Yagudin + Tarasova/Mishin/Morozov would be a good series, not movie. I can't imagine their story being told in under 2-3 hr.

Kwan's journey to olympic gold she never gets, this could be oscar-worthy.
Also, duh, John Curry? How does noone mention him :drama: His story is also oscar-worthy

Others are too young and still have a long skating career (or at least performing) ahead of them. They could be future successful coach/public figure at the later part of their life too so maybe not a good idea to make movies about them now just yet

I second suggestions for Javier Fernandez, Yuzuru Hanyu, Tatsuki Machida and Gordeeva/Grinkov/Kulik films (sometime after the first two finish their sport careers). Ioanna, thank you so much for sharing Machida's story! He sure deserves a film of his own.

Other skaters whose biopics I'd have enjoyed seeing are Kurt Browning, Midori Ito, Miki Ando, Irina Rodnina, Lu Chen, Grishuk and Platov, Evgeni Plushenko (in which the rivalry with Alexei Yagudin would only be a part of), Torvill and Dean.

There are also skaters who are equally or more well-known as coaches whose biopics I would have found very interesting: Brian Orser, Moskvina and Mishin, Igor Shpilband, Eteri Tutberidze.

Of the current skaters I'd have loved to see biopics of Yulia Lipnitskaya, Ilinykh and Zhiganshin, Alyona Savchenko, Maksim Trankov, Kavaguchi and Smirnov, Sui and Han some day.

It would have certainly been very interesting to see biopics of Elena Berezhnaya, Irina Slutskaya, Johnny Weir, but I doubt that films that could deal honestly with the way they'd been hurt by politicking at the crucial junctures of their sport careers could be produced. However, it's noteworthy to observe that they've all sprung up wonderfully from these setbacks. Figure skating may be a subjective sport, but time is a fair judge.

I'd have also loved to see a film about Davis and White, but also doubt that a truthful account could be produced, in this case regarding not the judging, but various parallel stories that entertwined theirs.

In general, I'd have enjoyed a fs biopic that has both great skating and an interesting story, not focused mainly on getting OGM, rivalry with another skater, a sports scandal or somebody's love life. I'd prefer a story that shows life in all its richness.

However, the main obstacle for creating such a film would be that it would be extremely hard to find actors to play any of these skaters. It's not just about the elements. It's also about the way they move on the ice in general, the way they express music, their charisma. After all, we've seen the real thing, at least on you tube, and I think it would be impossible not to compare. I think it's like when Hollywood decided to do a biopic of Enrico Caruso: they hired Mario Lanza to play him. I know that film wasn't particularly accurate, but what I'm trying to say is that Mario Lanza could walk onto the stage, and one could believe it was Enrico Caruzo. Who could go out onto the ice and make us believe that we're seeing Kurt Browning or Midori Ito or Yuko Kavaguchi and Aleksandr Smirnov, or Yuzuru Hanyu, or Johnny Weir, and so on?

I would love to see a something like a docu-drama called "The Feds" Each week we'd get a different 2 hour drama that follows the skaters and coaches through their training and personal lives. They could interview coaches from the major feds about their past and current students and show dramatic "Flashbacks" of their former stars. The Drama between pairs skaters who are not getting along and how they work through their differences and make it to the top of the podium. The drama between the top singles skaters from each fed and which ones actually get along together as well as those who don't.

I'd love to see a session with a Sports Psychologist and the effect it has on the skater. There are a ton of possibilities.

I feel ya on this. While I was reading about Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze in The Second Mark I kept thinking that if the story were fiction one would say it was in incredibly poor taste. And there were a ton of fluff pieces during the time they were competing that just came off as creepy and exploitative. Berezhnaya herself must be made of absolute steel, which comes through so beautifully in the book but certainly not in the NBC TV commentary.

It all comes down to how it's represented, though. It is possible to do real-life stories that are moving without being cheese-fests. The Woman in Gold springs to mind for me.

Poor taste if it was fiction, yes... But it was her reality. *shrug* I think her story is interesting.

Is this one of the fluff pieces you were talking about? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yYlo06K7yPM

I'm shocked Oleg Shliakhov actually agreed to be in this piece, however, I suppose the English speaking media would be able to take advantage of the fact that he didn't speak English.

The part about the train was extremely kitschy and eyeroll inducing.

That was my first thought, too.

I've seen a couple of Fluff pieces on Rudy but, nothing very in-depth. I would certainly be interested in seeing it. Wasn't there a movie about Oksana's life??

I'd rather prefer watching more documentaries and fluff pieces about figure skating world. There's not enough of them these days, ISU should try to market it this way too using social media more on top of it.

Movie about figure skaters or some drama would more likely than not turn out to be cheesy or utter embarrassment. Your suggestions are quite interesting but difficult to realise.

Very interesting reading the posts in this thread. And about who is being suggested, and for what reasons.

My suggestion is not a big name. Well, not internationally at least. But, her story has so many twists and turns and so much drama that it would make a great film:

Zoe Jones (ISU Bio; Wikipedia; Fan Fest)

In fact, back in January, I said the following when talking about her in the "New discoveries for the 2015-16 season" thread:

If it was a film, people would criticise it for not being realistic!

And that was before the latest twists in the tale:

  • Being the obvious choice to be the British Ladies representative at 2016 Worlds, but missing out because she wasn't expecting to be in the running, and so hadn't entered any international competitions to get the minimum TES's until it was too late.
  • Switching to Pairs skating at the end of the 2015-16 season, to partner a Frenchman 10 years her junior.

Come to think of it, my comment a couple of weeks ago in the 2016-17 Splits & Partner Changes thread would make a good summary of the plot:

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...tner-Changes&p=1453108&viewfull=1#post1453108

As I say, so many twists and turns! :drama:

Plushenko's life.

His birth( he was born in a train in Far-East, Siberia), but the very poor family moved to Volgograd because of Zhenya's health. He lived all alone in St. Petersburg ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixm3FTDIR_U and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgdtM2Hyk94) the little Zhenya was beaten, humiliated by the older skaters in the group! When his mother moved to St Petersburg they collected bottles and bought food from it. Practically they are starving for a few months. Their rivalry with Yagudin from the beginning!

His work ethic, how streched him his mother every day, Biellman spin, how much pain and crying!

His succes since 1998( he won his first ECH medal and WCH medal at 15), his incredibly popularity, personal life.

He was invited to America with Mishin, but they said their life is Russia. Plus he received a proposal from the US to play a role in a romantic movie with a skater girl. He almost agreed, but when he learned how much time to make a movie he rejected it. He wanted to be Olympic champion.
His first wife was a daughter of a Russian billionaire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C86ECiA7iVI They got merried too early, they were very young. Masha was very very jealous they fought with each other: shouting, slamming doors all the time! After Torino gold Masha and her businessman father wanted to Plushy finish the skating career and start to work on the business of Masha's father-who is a hotelier. Plushy started his second university( he graduated as a coach in 2005), and in 2008 he graduated from the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management at St. Petersburg State Engineering and Economic University -but when he finished they weren't together with Masha. Plushy moved from Masha before the birth of his first son. They divorced.

Plushenko met with Yana Rudkovskaya in London 2007. Rudkovskaya is one of the most famous, infamous, beautiful, talented woman in Russia. Many Russians couldn't accept that their sweetheart's relationship with an older woman, who had an ugly divorce with an another billionair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRbeNncmIxw Gossips in the media, but Plushenko and Yana Rudkovskaya got married in 2009. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7kBTzVNl_g Remember Plushy won the European Song Contest with Dima Bilan( Yana is the agent of Bilan) and Edvin Marton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-72s4WzUcKI I like that song but many votes went to the song because of Plushy. ( after party https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcSGFgbH1KY&t=2m55s listen to the audience when he appeared )

Plushenko in Vancouver. I know in N-A Evan's victory was fair, but not in many other places in the World. He received many supports from commentators, journalists, experts, coaches, old skaters and his fans. One of his intervews Plushy said he had army of defenders. Fans wrote letters to IOC, ISU directly, and they wanted to revision of the final result. They fought for him everywhere in Internet, too.
Interesting story he had many shows in 2010 Japan, he received many gifts from the Japanese fans: He ordered a container, because the gifts already more than 500 kg! ( Like a rock star https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsEpvr0_eV4 traffic jam front of the hotel )

Plushy's life since 2010. His victory in 2012 ECH, his story since 2013 when he was operated in Israel. Russian Championships in 2014, and his spot in Sochi...discussion. His inspirational story to his withdrawal before the individual competition. And after the attacks and supports in Russia and in everywhere...

He is the most famous skater in the world. He has fans (and he has haters, of course ;)) everywhere. For example he is the favorite skater of Catherine Zeta-Jones, she and Douglas wanted to meet him in Courcheval after the show..He played golf with Morgan Freeman( they were in same team ) Jessica Alba etc.
The last news on him yesterday, he is on the list of the Russian Forbes. He is 36th Russian celebrity, he earned 3 million dollars in last year.( He is on the list since 2007 except 2015??? ) His house in Moscow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REdYfgRGqYE

Plushy has a proposal from the Russians to make a movie about his life, but he didn't want to make it. Yet.

Uhm- a Yu Na Kim and Mao Asada film of course. Imagine, two star crossed skaters destined for greatness, with pressure and adversity on either side. Federations pitting them with each other, fans screaming, the world stage. Their life stories are also colourful and would make for a great screenplay. Kim with her story of starting small and dominating the scene. Was she pressured to compete after 2010? Why did she leave Brian? How did she feel about her comeback in 2013 and the so near yet so far plot of 2014?

and Mao- the what could have been ingenue of 2005. She beat SLutskaya and Cohen but was barred from Turin. ALso competing with Kim all the time, pushing the boundaries. The showdown at Vancouver. Losing her jumps. Losing her mother. Going through her slump. Vindication at Sochi.

I swear. It would be like Rush-meets-Cutting Edge-meets Rocky in sequins.

There was a movie about Oksana that came out in 1994, I forget the name but it sounded very LifetimeNetwork. Full of Heart: The OB Story? In fact it might have been a Lifetime movie, but it was a whitewash. I think Galina orchestrated it, so she came out looking like a saint. Not that great.

That sounds like the movie I saw. It was either on lifetime or the family channel. You're right about them leaving most of the drama out of her life. I think the final scene was her OGM win which means that most of her post Olympic drama was not included in the movie.

Yao Bing. First (?) Chinese pairs skater in the Communist China where they have no ability to bring in outside coaches or resources to build a program. Goes to Olympics or Worlds, places last by a heck of a lot but remembers/records everyone else he sees, goes on to build one of the best pairs programs in the entire world. Encounters struggles like his own country's interference and the criticisms of the international skating community in the process. The film could end with Shen and Zhao's Worlds gold in 2003 (because of the stunning Turandot program), with a postscript about their Olympic win in 2010.

Holy Cow!! When did Plushy get those Tattoo's ?

I approve!! So, is Plushy considered a "Rebel" in Russia? BTW, I still can't get over how cute baby Plushy is.......He's like a little clone of his father.

No, he isn't a rebel. But he lives, he is doing everything as he wants, he is an "inwardly free man", he doesn't care of his haters, he knows how many fans he has in the world. He doesn' want to "be good" for everyone. He is very loyal, he loves his family and the children in general. And the children love him so much. He will be a good coach.

And probably he will never live without ice.

I recently finished reading Joy Goodwin's The Second Mark (about the 2002 Salt Lake City pairs event) and I would absolutely LOVE to see a film adaptation of it. All three of the podium finishers had such incredible stories to bring them to that point, and it was such a complex intersection of stories. I wouldn't want to see it take a position or focus on the scandal, actually, but, as the book does, show three amazing pairs who ultimately were so much better than the hardships around them and the disservices done to them.

Alternatively, you could do it as a Roshamon-style story, showing the same events from each of their perspectives.

I think I'd like to see The Second Mark as a movie or maybe a mini series. Goodwin really went deeply into their stories. It's such an engrossing book that I have some ambivalence about translating it to a visual medium.

For Elena, I think it would be interesting to explore her life post-2002. She has, I think, 3 children with Steven Cousins and a quiet life. It's an interesting contrast, particularly as it seemed to me that being separated from her mother when she was young was such a hardship. What she gave up, what she gained, and how she feels about it now. Although she may prefer to keep her private life private.

If all the skaters' post 2002 lives were explored, though, the Jamie/David part could be a little, I don't know.:slink:

But I wonder, if the angle were to be, who chooses to give up much of their childhood and why? (that seems to be Tara's focus in the series, and how that affects parents, etc.) It's been a few years, but I think I remember the general feeling I got from the book was that Jamie and David chose their paths; the others, it varied, but less so.

Plushyfan, that was a great post about Plushy's life, it contained a lot of information that I hadn't heard about. Who needs a tv show after that amount of detail!

I'm curious about the backstory of his wife, as I tried googling her but couldn't figure out what it could be that made you describe her as "infamous". She doesn't have a Wikipedia page, which is usually my first go-to.

  • Platov/Grishuk/Usova/Zhulin/Navka....their dangerous liaisons will be a great story for film
  • Yagudin/Plushenko/Mishin/Tarasova/Morozov - drama! drama!
  • Morozov's affairs with various female skaters
  • Surya Bonaly - iconic figure regardless of whether you do or don't appreciate her skating.
  • Gordeeva/Grinkov and Kulik
  • Katarina Witt - third participation in Olympics as two time Olympic champion after the unification of her country.
  • Yuna Kim - her life and journey to the two Olympics and thereafter
  • Rudy Galindo - his epic success in 1996
  • Lu Chen and her coach Mingzhu Li
  • Bin Yao - saga of how to make Chinese pairs strong from the scratch
  • Shen/Zhao - finally winning the OGM after all hardship
  • Pang/Tong - their fairy tale-like retirement at home
  • Artur Dmitriev - two OGMs with two different partners and coaching
  • Nicole Bobek and Christopher Bowman - wasted talents and beauty
  • Delobel/Schoenfelder - finally rose to the top, but what a misfortune
  • Miki Ando's motherhood
  • Tiffany Chin's life with her tiger mother
  • Shizuka Arakawa - her journey to Torino and thereafter
  • Suzuki Akiko - anorexia and late booming as a skater
  • Ashley Wagner - broke out the long drought of U.S ladies in Worlds. Her domestic rivalry with Gracie, Rachael, Mirai, Alisa and coaching changes
  • Debi Thomas - if she is out of the current slump, her story will be a great source for film
  • Joannie Rochette at Vancouver

Each skater has their own intriguing stories, so other people would like to say about others as well. :)

I agree generally with your list other than the Chinese pairs are rather ho hum, yes it was the rise of the Chinese pairs but that is better done in their coach. I might add Liz Manley who dealt with depression, financial issues and crumbled all the time. Elena and Anton and her accident. 2002 I suppose along with the Canadians is fine. Kira Ivanova the forgotten Russian, almost unwanted, who was hated on by the American broadcasters, fell into depression, alcohol and murdered , Maria B, the unwanted old lady, Carolina K and lying so to speak in respect to her boyfriend, Michelle Kwan because she is the queen, Irina Slutskaya and her health issues, Oksana Baiul the orphan waif, who was cut before the freeskate due to the none to careful opposite jumper Tanya Sawechenko, Tai and Randi and olympics that weren't to be, AIDS and how it affected the sport of figure skating from John Curry to Brian Pockar, Rob McCall, Rudi Galindo and a list of other male skaters,Christopher Bowman what really happened with his marriages, Toller Cranston the artist, the legend, the skater, Scott Hamilton his life, Brian Orser: The Story of His Life the Susan Lucci of figure skating and outed.

https://www.instagram.com/rudkovskayaofficial/ more than 1 millions followers . She has Russian wiki page.

shortly: her father was army officer
her mother: PhD, neurologist
Yana: dermatologist doctor -but her Russian haters didn't know it they thought she is a stupid blond... (https://www.google.hu/search?q=Нико...UIBygB&biw=1366&bih=630#imgrc=6QMbUujLw8vYUM: - Plushy already doesn't allow to take such photos, But I think Yana knows she is a mother of 3great guys. I find this photo very beautiful.

She got married with a Russian biliionaire, Viktor Baturin.-Yana became a b**** in many Russian eyes because of this marriage with an older and isn't too handsome man. Baturin already had a son Andrei from an another relationship and he lives with his father. Yana and Baturin's son is Nikolai.

So she was a billionaire's wife but she wanted to continue the work. Yana opened her first beauty saloons in 1998. After she became the agent of Dima Bilan who is already one of the most popular and famous pop singers in Russia.

They had a bad marriage( 2001-2008) with Baturin and they divorced . But the divorce was very loud in the media. Yana fought for both sons, finally she is rising them with Plush. She adopted Andrei.

But she became an evil b**** again who stole the son of the biological mother. Andrei's real mother who was a nightclub dancer wanted to her son after many years when she didn't want to see him. But Yana fought for Andrei in court again because she believed that Andrei is on right place with her. And she loves him as his own son. And this story started again in April.

Many Russian think that woman who is works in show business that is not real worker. But Yana is very succesful, talented in it, and as Plushy said she is a workaholic, stubborn, full of energy. She goes to work morning and arrives at home evening. Many Russian women hate her because of she was/is beautiful, she has great wardrobe, rich, and she has a famous Olympic champion husband now. The family https://twitter.com/ruhellomagazine/status/756900699238232068
They met in London in 2007. They say "it was love at first sight" They needed to fight for that relationship, The Russian media said that is just a PR action. Yana is not the type of what Plushenko likes sexually, he likes the dark-haired women as his first wife etc. Plushenko was in hard situation with the sons, but the guys already admire him.

Sasha Plushenko's Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gnomgnomych/ 112 000 followers. He is incredible cute and smart.

I'm not a fan of Yana despite she is a kind woman, she is kind with Plushy's fan. She is smart, she knows how to handle and how to benefit Plushy's popularity. Masha Ermak-Plushy's first wife didn't know it. She was extremly jealous. Many Russians think Yana pushes Plushenko to compete all the time, she doesn't care of Plushy's health. But I don't think it. She is a strong woman, supports him but Plushenko is also a very strong-willed man he knows what he wants.

One of Plush's tattos his latin motto: "Viam supervadet vadens." --- "The path will be overcome by the person walking it."

edit : I looked for an interview of Yana, but I didn't find it. But I found this:

Yana described Plush' appearance. When people ask her what she thinks about his nose, she says that his big nose speaks about his sexuality. :rofl2: ( good answer Yana!) She added that maybe he is not a super handsome man in a traditional sense, but "when you talk to him, you feel his charisma and power, and when he skates, he is just the God of Ice!"
