Others are too young and still have a long skating career (or at least performing) ahead of them. They could be future successful coach/public figure at the later part of their life too so maybe not a good idea to make movies about them now just yet

I second suggestions for Javier Fernandez, Yuzuru Hanyu, Tatsuki Machida and Gordeeva/Grinkov/Kulik films (sometime after the first two finish their sport careers). Ioanna, thank you so much for sharing Machida's story! He sure deserves a film of his own.

Other skaters whose biopics I'd have enjoyed seeing are Kurt Browning, Midori Ito, Miki Ando, Irina Rodnina, Lu Chen, Grishuk and Platov, Evgeni Plushenko (in which the rivalry with Alexei Yagudin would only be a part of), Torvill and Dean.

There are also skaters who are equally or more well-known as coaches whose biopics I would have found very interesting: Brian Orser, Moskvina and Mishin, Igor Shpilband, Eteri Tutberidze.

Of the current skaters I'd have loved to see biopics of Yulia Lipnitskaya, Ilinykh and Zhiganshin, Alyona Savchenko, Maksim Trankov, Kavaguchi and Smirnov, Sui and Han some day.

It would have certainly been very interesting to see biopics of Elena Berezhnaya, Irina Slutskaya, Johnny Weir, but I doubt that films that could deal honestly with the way they'd been hurt by politicking at the crucial junctures of their sport careers could be produced. However, it's noteworthy to observe that they've all sprung up wonderfully from these setbacks. Figure skating may be a subjective sport, but time is a fair judge.

I'd have also loved to see a film about Davis and White, but also doubt that a truthful account could be produced, in this case regarding not the judging, but various parallel stories that entertwined theirs.

In general, I'd have enjoyed a fs biopic that has both great skating and an interesting story, not focused mainly on getting OGM, rivalry with another skater, a sports scandal or somebody's love life. I'd prefer a story that shows life in all its richness.

However, the main obstacle for creating such a film would be that it would be extremely hard to find actors to play any of these skaters. It's not just about the elements. It's also about the way they move on the ice in general, the way they express music, their charisma. After all, we've seen the real thing, at least on you tube, and I think it would be impossible not to compare. I think it's like when Hollywood decided to do a biopic of Enrico Caruso: they hired Mario Lanza to play him. I know that film wasn't particularly accurate, but what I'm trying to say is that Mario Lanza could walk onto the stage, and one could believe it was Enrico Caruzo. Who could go out onto the ice and make us believe that we're seeing Kurt Browning or Midori Ito or Yuko Kavaguchi and Aleksandr Smirnov, or Yuzuru Hanyu, or Johnny Weir, and so on?

I would love to see a something like a docu-drama called "The Feds" Each week we'd get a different 2 hour drama that follows the skaters and coaches through their training and personal lives. They could interview coaches from the major feds about their past and current students and show dramatic "Flashbacks" of their former stars. The Drama between pairs skaters who are not getting along and how they work through their differences and make it to the top of the podium. The drama between the top singles skaters from each fed and which ones actually get along together as well as those who don't.

I'd love to see a session with a Sports Psychologist and the effect it has on the skater. There are a ton of possibilities.

I feel ya on this. While I was reading about Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze in The Second Mark I kept thinking that if the story were fiction one would say it was in incredibly poor taste. And there were a ton of fluff pieces during the time they were competing that just came off as creepy and exploitative. Berezhnaya herself must be made of absolute steel, which comes through so beautifully in the book but certainly not in the NBC TV commentary.

It all comes down to how it's represented, though. It is possible to do real-life stories that are moving without being cheese-fests. The Woman in Gold springs to mind for me.

Poor taste if it was fiction, yes... But it was her reality. *shrug* I think her story is interesting.

I'd rather prefer watching more documentaries and fluff pieces about figure skating world. There's not enough of them these days, ISU should try to market it this way too using social media more on top of it.

Movie about figure skaters or some drama would more likely than not turn out to be cheesy or utter embarrassment. Your suggestions are quite interesting but difficult to realise.

There was a movie about Oksana that came out in 1994, I forget the name but it sounded very LifetimeNetwork. Full of Heart: The OB Story? In fact it might have been a Lifetime movie, but it was a whitewash. I think Galina orchestrated it, so she came out looking like a saint. Not that great.

That sounds like the movie I saw. It was either on lifetime or the family channel. You're right about them leaving most of the drama out of her life. I think the final scene was her OGM win which means that most of her post Olympic drama was not included in the movie.

No, he isn't a rebel. But he lives, he is doing everything as he wants, he is an "inwardly free man", he doesn't care of his haters, he knows how many fans he has in the world. He doesn' want to "be good" for everyone. He is very loyal, he loves his family and the children in general. And the children love him so much. He will be a good coach.

And probably he will never live without ice.

I recently finished reading Joy Goodwin's The Second Mark (about the 2002 Salt Lake City pairs event) and I would absolutely LOVE to see a film adaptation of it. All three of the podium finishers had such incredible stories to bring them to that point, and it was such a complex intersection of stories. I wouldn't want to see it take a position or focus on the scandal, actually, but, as the book does, show three amazing pairs who ultimately were so much better than the hardships around them and the disservices done to them.

Alternatively, you could do it as a Roshamon-style story, showing the same events from each of their perspectives.

I think I'd like to see The Second Mark as a movie or maybe a mini series. Goodwin really went deeply into their stories. It's such an engrossing book that I have some ambivalence about translating it to a visual medium.

For Elena, I think it would be interesting to explore her life post-2002. She has, I think, 3 children with Steven Cousins and a quiet life. It's an interesting contrast, particularly as it seemed to me that being separated from her mother when she was young was such a hardship. What she gave up, what she gained, and how she feels about it now. Although she may prefer to keep her private life private.

If all the skaters' post 2002 lives were explored, though, the Jamie/David part could be a little, I don't know.

But I wonder, if the angle were to be, who chooses to give up much of their childhood and why? (that seems to be Tara's focus in the series, and how that affects parents, etc.) It's been a few years, but I think I remember the general feeling I got from the book was that Jamie and David chose their paths; the others, it varied, but less so.

I agree generally with your list other than the Chinese pairs are rather ho hum, yes it was the rise of the Chinese pairs but that is better done in their coach. I might add Liz Manley who dealt with depression, financial issues and crumbled all the time. Elena and Anton and her accident. 2002 I suppose along with the Canadians is fine. Kira Ivanova the forgotten Russian, almost unwanted, who was hated on by the American broadcasters, fell into depression, alcohol and murdered , Maria B, the unwanted old lady, Carolina K and lying so to speak in respect to her boyfriend, Michelle Kwan because she is the queen, Irina Slutskaya and her health issues, Oksana Baiul the orphan waif, who was cut before the freeskate due to the none to careful opposite jumper Tanya Sawechenko, Tai and Randi and olympics that weren't to be, AIDS and how it affected the sport of figure skating from John Curry to Brian Pockar, Rob McCall, Rudi Galindo and a list of other male skaters,Christopher Bowman what really happened with his marriages, Toller Cranston the artist, the legend, the skater, Scott Hamilton his life, Brian Orser: The Story of His Life the Susan Lucci of figure skating and outed.
