Canadians.....I don't know how many of you will understand this question but, I'm going to ask it anyway. How many of you make fun of American's for saying Ab(out), instead of Ab(oat). After some of our conversations last evening, I started thinking of all the good times I've have in Canada. I met a very nice man from Saskatchewan and we.....hung out for over a month as he followed our tour before we left the Country. He used to make fun of the way I talked and it used to crack me up. I was watching the Rick Mercer Report and Rick and Jann Arden went on a date. Rick got all excited to see her tour bus and She said "Everybody get's so excited Ab(oat) the buses. It made me crack up.

I'm American, but it is after all spelled abOUT not abOAT.

Many Canadian actors get hired for TV commercials in the US, and what gives them away is that OAT sound!
You do hear something close to that in areas of the US close to the Canadian border, such as Minnesota (aka Minnesoota).

I have complained about horn blowing and booing at Euros. Behavior at figure skating events in Europe sometimes is far worse than anything seen in North America. Remember the incidents of fans getting on the ice and frightening skaters at Worlds back in the 90s?

BTW, "logic" is not repeating the same words over and over again, which is mostly what fan posts do. I know you love your skaters and want them to do well. If you had your druthers, they'd be on the World podium this year and the Olympic podium next year.

Unfortunately, wishing doesn't make it so, and fans can't make it happen. Only the skaters themselves can work on their weaknesses, build their strengths and make themselves more competitive.

After reading reports that Canadian crowds routinely start leaving before a competition is over, while skaters are still competing on the ice, just to get a head start on traffic, I will never attend a competition in Canada.

4everchan verified that lots of people did leave before the competition was over.

Never said you were, Osmond4gold just pointed to a phenomenon that is happening during the US election as a parallel to the situation here.

But Osmond4gold, we should not stoop to his level and make generalizations about FSU. They will operate the community they want but here we do not want his discriminatory behaviour.

I think it was probably harder for the Russians as Plushy was the only Russian Man who had a chance at medaling. Remember, Russian Men were the 2 time and defending Gold medalists in the event

Nooo, you silly goose, Evan Lysacek was the defending gold medalist. Plushy was defending his PLATINUM medal (AKA his silver medal from Vancouver).

Seeing his attempt to go forward and then leave the ice affected psychology of the whole event. I felt strongly that it led to Kevin Reynold's awful SP as he had to come to the ice directly after Plushenko left the ice.....especially as they had faced off in the LP of the team event....

And that seemed to kick off the splatfest that ran through the men's event.

So if stunned and shocked Russian fans felt that they couldn't bear to stay for the event, at that point, I can understand it.

In fact, I recall that after Kevin's SP, I turned off the TV for a while, and only looked at the recording a few hours later....

I've never really thought if it that way before. It makes sense and I appreciate your giving this fresh perspective, as it's true, the scenario likely rattled everyone who was there, from the skaters down to the fans.

Maybe I shouldn't judge as I've never been at an event where a skater has had to withdraw, but as a skating fan in general, I think I would want to watch the competition regardless? Though thinking about serious injuries that have happened in front of a competition crowd, for example, when Tatiana Totmianina had that godawful accident and hit the ice from a faulty pairs lift at Skate America, I probably would feel too ill to stick around after seeing something like that.

Sorry TGee, just to clarify, do you mean the split between them and coaching team was imminent, as in, Kaitlyn and Andrew were going to have an imminent split from Pasquale and Anjelika, or do you mean their coaching team has split, as in, Pasquale and Anjelika aren't coaching together anymore? Feeling like I'm missing something there.

While public mention of a possible split between Pasquale and Anjelika was a late summer rumour, W/P would have been unfortunately in the midst of any tension....

And while Nicolas Morosov is the first coach listed in their update ISU database biography, Pasquale is still listed in second place and Anjelika's name has been removed altogether.

ON the other hand, other dance teams coached by the couple do still list both in there ISU biographies ....This includes Hawayek and Baker...but Anjelika was alone with them at both Autumn Classic and Skate Canada which seems to confirm something is up.

So while not looking to feed the rumours, the evidence is adding up that was an impediment to keeping both Pasquale and Anjelika in their coaching team....

Thanks for the link. I enjoyed the way she mentioned those who are podium threats and said why they may or may not win without devolving into undue negativity.

I was finally able to watch Katelyn's programs at SC and thought they were pretty amazing.

a bit about the history of this thread....

Mango and some other Canadian fans including myself, were often overflowing Patrick's fan fest with other Canadian news and it came to a point when we were asked gently to stick to the main topic (and rightly so )

One has to understand that aside from Patrick's thread, unlike skaters from other countries, and despite having world and olympic champions from Canada, there are very few posts, news, pictures on the other Canadian skater threads.

Mango had the brilliant idea of dedicating a fan fest to Canadian skaters in general, so we could discuss everyone (and Patrick) outside of Patrick's fan fest. However, it was deemed better to start this thread in the Edge for a couple reasons:

We didn't want to burden the fan fest with banter about skaters that already have a thread, even though most of these thread are rather inactive outside of cheering before and after competitions. It would dilute even more the information on those specific skaters and/or make it redundant.

We didn't want to have a long thread that would be continuing year after year but preferred a per season thread...
Right now, Canadian skating looks really strong and normally, we would be all focused on the positive and cheering !!!! However, it could happen in a few years that a similar thread would focus on rebuilding or coaching changes or struggles in some disciplines.

So, for those reasons, as well as opening up conversation for those who don't normally visit the fan fest area and may have constructive comments to add on to this thread, it was decided to open up this thread in the Edge. Mango would edit the first post with medal counts, and results etc....

So, this is not exactly a fan fest but it was sort of intended as such. In general, aside from one user, it's been a very good experience and I would think that the Edge has been a right home for this thread.... however, if possible, I would hope that this thread continues with its original intent at the base : discussing Canadian skating in a positive, constructive and cheering manner.

Is it too much to ask? Do we have to hide in the fan fests when it comes to Patrick, Tessa and Scott, Duhamel and Radford, and our three leading ladies?

I would be very disappointed if we had to ask the moderators to move this thread to the fan fests just because one user is constantly blowing our maple leaf.

I've been reporting on FS sites for almost 20 years and I've only had people react badly to 2 skaters that have been my favorites to report on. They were Patrick Chan and Maria Butyrskaya. I am not the type of person to say that Patrick was "Robbed" or that Maria B. lost at Worlds in 1998 because she tripped during her final footwork sequence. Even though, I'm convinced that that's the only reason she didn't beat Irina. However, in 1999 when Michelle fell in the SP and followed it up with a sub-par free skate, people were simply cruel to me after I congratulated Maria on her first World Championship. People said that Maria won because Michelle faltered, which may have been true. However, having been in the Arena, it wouldn't have mattered if Michelle had skated perfectly because Maria simply had better programs. If they both had skated perfectly, Michelle's Carmen SP was a snooze compared to Maria's St. James Infirmary program.

Their LP's were both spectacular but, Michelle didn't skate well in the LP and was noticeably slower than Maria and Julia Soldatova. I was sad that instead of congratulating Maria on finally skating her best under pressure. That many people called Maria's win a fluke and blamed it on Michelle having the flu.
