Yulia Lipnitskaya

British ones said the same. :curse:
I mean girl's leg is being massaged right in front of camera, then she holds her leg, limps - and it's mental problem. :sarcasm:

Really? The British eurosport vid that I watched was quite certain it was the knee.....even the Chinese commentators on ELTA were pretty sure it was her body not feeling well, both referencing the warmup leg checkup.

To my knowledge, the only previous reference to knees was knee massage to reduce leg tension. See the first 30 seconds of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDOGDkTOtyg . After the FS performance at Ondrej Nepela we saw Alexei massaging both knees. Any massaging of the knees can be attributed to this purpose. The cramp is more likely what we saw today. Watch Yulia and Alexei after the performance, beginning at about 9:10 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc5cttCxAOM . We have seen many examples of Yulia reacting to bad performances when with Eteri. What we saw today is nothing like that. At one point Alexei gently nudges her with his elbow (just before he waves to the camera). There is an element of disappointment, but I see nothing more. I will go out on a speculative limb with the idea that they knew whatever happened was very possible, but went ahead for two reasons. First, she might get through the program without incident. Second, whatever was wrong, it was not threatening. Certainly a cramp is not harmful but pain and muscle paralysis can make functioning impossible. Cramps are usually brief but potentially episodic. That also agrees with what we saw, where she was unable to skate, but a few seconds later she was functioning well. I know that Alexei would not have risked serious injury, and had it been something serious she would not have had any choice but to stop. The cramp (or whatever) occurred, so they adjusted according to a strategy they had earlier decided on. There is nothing in their behavior during or after the skate to suggest this took them by surprise. Alexei tried to send the message to us by waving with a slight smile, but we aren't listening/watching. Alexei really is good with Yulia, she takes adversity in stride because she understands and trusts. Remember this recent message to us all: Проблемы? Заходите, родные! Сколько лет, сколько зим...🙃 (Problems? Come, dear ones! How many years, how many winters? Yulia is in this for the long haul.

I really hope it's nothing more serious than a cramp. (The way she tried to move on ice did seem like she was suffering from a cramp.)

Her coach is a complete idiot. That makeup and such irresponsible attitude with an obvious serious problem
My first reaction was similar, but now I think he might have got caught up in the moment. He's experienced skater, but as a coach maybe he didn't encounter such bizarre situation: skater wasn't injured per se (cramps usually don't damage muscles afaik), but unable to perform some elements. I've had cramps doing sports sometimes and they may be very weird: you can walk or even run, but can't do some specific move or attain specific pose.
Also when adrenaline runs high in your veins, you can't really feel the pain as much and think you can continue to perform. After all, Aleksei asked Julia and she was clear about her will to finish the skate. I think he shouldn't have done that, just say "it's enough" and tell her to leave - by asking her he had put himself in difficult position.

Anyway, good luck to Julia! I really, really hope Kogan was sincere and it had been cramp indeed, not some serious injury.

Oh my bad! It was Polish commentators - they've even said she needs psychologist. Sorry and thanks for remark.

So you think this cramp ( or pain or whatever it was ) was related to the injury she signed off from SA ?

There is one possibility. A pinched nerve in the spine can cause cramps in leg. We can't judge this based on the videos. There is nothing we saw today that indicates she was suffering from a condition in her back. On the other hand, there have been rumors about a pinched nerve. As these incidents accumulate, it puts pressure on Yulia and Alexei to give us a full explanation. I expect that soon. In the meantime I am going to assume the best. It is very optimistic that Alexei was smiling and Yulia was calm after the performance.

I strongly believe Yulia and Alexei knew this might happen before she began to skate the FS, and they had planned what to do if she had a cramp. In fact, we have evidence that it or something similar occurred a few minutes before her FS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOK-CYFyLNw I believe you are quite right to attribute what we saw to a cramp. Cramps rarely occur once, and we know this occurred at least twice within a few minutes. There are many causes, I see no reason to be alarmed without more information. Yulia was calm, and Alexei at least appeared to be rather cheery in K&C. I see no reason for us to be alarmed based on what we have seen and what we know. It is very unfortunate that it occurred during her FS, but she can be thankful if it is merely a common cramp.

Well, let's hope it's just a cramp and the worst is over - though, it's good that Urmanov said they are staying in Moscow for check ups. I do think each time she competes there's more pressure on her to get out of this funk, so I would like her to go to some less important competitions before RN, if she can, of course. From what I can gather, she really wanted to get a skate out, a good one, that's probably the biggest reason why she didn't want to WD. It's not rational, and we can all agree that maybe going home to reevaluate her health would be better, but at the same time I can understand her hunger to compete well.

Can you imagine seeing an entire arena crying with her? The camera was focusing all around on people with tears in their eyes. In the same way it puts unwanted pressure on her, it shows how people love her.

Gah, I just want her to be happy. I really don't want to see her crying again like today. And I really felt she could have done it. Maybe the skating gods know better.

We will very likely see her wet eyes again. She is facing a long road with many ups and downs. I don't think many, if any of us appreciate the severity of the anxiety she feels and the way it affects her physically. Here is an interview quote from Dec., 2015 that brought me much closer to her feelings:

Q: Was this kind of free program performance expected today?

A: Honestly, I expected that I wouldn't be able to do anything at all today, because I wasn't ready, not mentally, not at all. I was sitting in the hotel room before the free, and all I wanted to do was to cry and to run away from here. I must do something with the mental background of the free, because I develop such an anxiety that it's like I really don't know what to do and how. I don't even know myself what I'm scared of. I really can't understand it. Like, I am afraid of not doing it right, or letting everybody down. All of it at once.

This much anxiety can affect every part of the body and the mind. It is what Alexei meant by the "colossal psychological" burden she had when she came to Sochi. They have made tremendous progress together, but as Yulia muses "How many winters?" Watch Alexei in the K&C today. He knew how to buoy her, how to tell us that it wasn't the end of the world. Their progress shows great promise for her future, as Yulia has said, everything will be fine with enough time.

Yule! @sunnylipnitskaya you're a big fellow! You went to the end, I did not give up half way! It shows and proves that you are an athlete with a capital letter! Life is so much to not predictable, and you do not know what will happen in a minute ....! God gives tests only to people who are in power to pass it surprises 😬! You have a huge army of fans and relatives to you people who support you at any moment! I'm proud of you! Bit you! Everything will be alright!

I read to skate that was Yulia's decision. I'm sure the only one Russian skater not going to risk a withdraw front of the home crowd. She came out to the warm up as Plushenko did, this would have been a little bit similar situation. Probably Yulia remembered what happened with Plushenko in Sochi ( She defended him ).... Some people mentioned the II. WW, :ohwell: he needed to skate with incredible pain for Russia.:palmf:

I feel sorry for Yulia. After the SP I believed this will be her real comeback.

Oh, it's not that I don't want to see her crying again, but competing to her home crowd and seeing so many of them getting emotional because of her played its part in her crying bout. And it was such a change from the other day - that's why I said it would be beneficial for her to run away from big competitions and try to get this clean skate without the pressure from the crowd.

I do think Urmanov and Sochi are playing a big part in bringing her back, I don't doubt it for a minute. I mean, she spent almost two years without jumping clean triple loops, now she has an actual edge on the lutz, her jumps, if not stable, are coming back slowly, getting higher even, and she's more comfortable in her body. But she's still so young, there's so much she can do in figure skating, I just want her to smile through an entire competition. Some tears I can take, but I want them to be happy.

Oh my bad! It was Polish commentators - they've even said she needs psychologist. Sorry and thanks for remark.

Germany and Poland had the same opinion, a miracle

Anyway, it was so absurd when they said "if she has an injury she CAN'T continue", as if it's not possible.... they obviously don't know much about sport:ohwell:
If they watched Yuzuru's COC14 FS i'm sure they thought the head bandage was part of the costume :rolleye:
