I guess...I highly doubt he'll win NHK cause Yuzu but he'd need atleast a bronze right? I think that's doable with the field. Buuut, Nathan and Kolyada will also be there. I don't know.

A bronze should be enough. Even if Boyang wins COC Jason with a bronze would still be ahead of him. Kolyada and Nathan are both 4 points behind him so would have to beat Jason by two spots to come out ahead.

Also remember there are two spots up for grabs really.

Assuming Javi, Chan, Shoma (not Boyang as I had on the brain before) and Hanyu are givens. That gives us some mix of two of Jason, Adam, Boyang, Kolada, Voronov, Nathan, Breznia... if we are looking at 4th and better placements. And of those listed Jason is the highest.

Wow. I never 'got' Adam Rippon and his SP is still much too camp for me personally, but this was beautiful and amazing, and just wonderful. Sad he's going to miss the GPF. Sad he has the likes of Nathan Chen in his team because this guy is so dangerous, he's probably melted the ice. Everyone should be afraid of him. Good for the US to have such a competitive team. Didn't like Denis Ten's LP nearly as much as his SP, but happy he's back (but I've always disliked his fistbumps during the program....wait til you're done Ten). Mura did well too, at least a bit of redemption. Javier looked so good I was sure he would be close to cracking 200...but, oh well...he didn't need to so that's okay. I like the programme, he has style, no question. All in all, a great evening! I remain scared of Nathan Chen though, because Shoma is one of my favourites and I see Chen as a very serious rival. *_* Let's see what happens.

Which is as it should be. All those who trumpeted Nathan as this year's "thing" should be sentenced to watch his LP, with falls, no choreography, and no performance chops, and understand that the US men's field is way deeper than Nathan.

That's just one bad skate, it's not 'proof' of anything, other than Chen had a poorly performed LP here.

A year ago people said similar things about Boyang Jin. He capped off his season with a medal at Worlds.

He won't have the reputation boost in NHK. Besides, Yuzu, Kolyada, Nathan are there as well.

... I think Jason will have more reputation there than Nathan or Kolyada. He was a hit on "The Ice" this year remember.

Also Jason has outscored Nathan in non US comps as well.... just saying.

I kind of, very secretly, wish that the Canadian men's field was deep enough for 3 of our men to have such fans that they are argue over who is better than the other. For us it is Chan......... and everyone else.

since i'll get accused for it anyway I may as well say it: i'll be extra salty if one (or more) of the US men makes the gpf (less so jason than adam or nathan) especially if they do it without wining one, because it should have been max last year, and it wasn't his fault that he didn't.

Missed all the skating so far today and instead slept in criminally late. But Adam landed a rotated 4T??? Good for him! Based on protocols, it really looks like the performances to watch are Adam and Denis. Anyone else or do I risk disappointment?

Mark Hanretty's opinions are so subjective, and he's clearly rooting for certain skaters.

Haven't watched any of the men yet but I'm thrilled to hear Adam did so well. And bravo to Rafael too.

I like Marina challenges Nathan with choreography. Surely, there are so little time for choreography when he attempts 5 quads in one program. But her approach was making the stsq and the chsq concise and explosive. He certainly doesn't shy away showing off his strength in those moments. Maybe she wouldn't allow quads unless he mastered those sequences at least? I think he had learned a lot preparing for this competition as well as finishing after Adam and Denis who had less quad, but strong performance.

I think Javier and Takahito did well too. There were mistakes but I did enjoy them.

I'm falling more and more in love with Javier each time i see him! This program really suits him! :luv17: But I thought his 3lz looked a bit iffy? There's something weird about the way his left blade leaves the ice?

We'll need to take a look with slow motion when shareable replay is available, but it's likely that he started shift to an inside edge just before takeoff.

On the the lutz thread last month, we looked at his 3Lz among others, including one of Javi's from Worlds. He definitely lost the outside edge just before vaulting with his pick, and that changed the arc before takeoff. But compared to other skaters, the amount of pre-rotation on the pick of the free leg wasn't so bad.

From what I could catch on the replay going by for this competition, actually seemed that he had a good vault and counter-torque/rotation compared to coming in on the skating leg, but I do think that there was a visible skid if not a shift of edge.

Looking forward to our being able to analyse a gif....but it looks like the judges weren't in love with this 3Lz...didn't get a carrot, but the GOE was mainly +2 and +1 despite the elevation....
