Jason Brown

I often forget that behind that sunshine disposition is a very fierce competitor, and I have no doubt that Jason will bring his best. I'm sure Jason and his team have a great plan in place -- already in evidence by his early departure for Japan. Everyone needs those extra days just to cope with the jet lag! And he's not on home turf, but let's call it sorta kinda home turf with all his Japanese fans. Hope he plays his game and gobbles up all those points. Interesting on the 4S. Didn't know they were considering that...Good luck Jason! I want to see you in the GPF!!!! :luv17:

Not sure if you've listened to the Scott Hamilton interview with Jason - if not it's a fun listen! Scott asks him to describe himself in five words, and the very first word he chooses is "driven." So yeah, proof positive that he's a fierce competitor!

As far as I know, no Icenetwork subscription needed and it works on mobile phones!

That was a great interview with Scott Hamilton, and I enjoyed it so much! Jason is able to do well under pressure, so I'm hoping my best for the 4T. It would be so great if he could land it again. I think it was in the TSL interview that Kori said that Jason needed to play HIS game, not to try to be like Skater X or Skater Y. Knowing that Nathan is there, I'm sure all the skaters are giving thought to their quad strategy. I thought it really was evident though at TdF that Nathan did his 4Z / 3T and 4F and then pooped out on everything else cos he got so tired. Glad Jason has had plenty of time since SA to prepare. I'm ready for NHK. Uh oh, 2 more all-nighters like last weekend! Hope I can do it!

It will be fun to see Jason and Grant together again at NHK. I don't think it's been mentioned here but Grant sent a really nice tweet to Jason after Skate America:

https://twitter.com/Grant_Hochstein/status/790255766041092097
@Grant_Hochstein Wow, @jasonbskates. That was amazing. Chills! #SkateAmerica

I'll be keeping stress at bay by (hopefully) welcoming new kittens. A stray I'd been feeding got pregnant and one day when I opened the door to feed her she just walked in and made herself at home. She looks like she has swallowed a basketball so I'm expecting the kittens to be born any day now. I'm really looking forward to playing with them. :) (If I'm unable to give them all away when they are old enough, I'll be contacting a local rescue agency who arranges fostering for cats until they are adopted.)

I don't think they would have the same TC two events in a row. Besides Shin Amano is more a butcherer in the ladies, not so much the men. In the men's event at COC, there were only two < the FS. One of them was Boyang Jin's (the one he fell on, I think, the 4T).

Anyway, I'm eager to see how Jason looks after a few extra weeks of training.

Aww to both! I used to volunteer at an animal shelter socializing the cats, so that story really warms my heart. Lucky mama cat and kittens to have found you, especially with winter almost here.

I know that Arriba and I are both in the Central time zone, so we'll be waking up real early on Fri and Sat. Poor Stitch and Mrs P have it even worse, el Henry a bit better, not sure about the rest of us. I think it might be at a reasonable hour for TMC and Karne, am I right ladies? Anyway, pretty much all of us will look forward to kitty stress relief tales if you've got any (and if mine do anything cutely dumb I'll contribute!). Thankfully I have Friday off.

Go Jason, Nathan, and Grant (and okay, Yuzu and everyone else too)!

PS I thought to myself, what a nice tweet from Grant, how did I miss it. Then I noticed that I'd favorited it already. Oops!

ETA me too Mrs P - can't wait to see where he's at, and that's good news about Shin Amano!

Ice dance is at a great time for me! It starts at like 7 p.m. my time on Friday and Saturday -- I'm really excited to see the Virtue/Moir and Papadakis/Cizeron face-off.

The pairs aren't at a bad time either -- 9 p.m. or so on Thursday and Friday. But yeah the men are at a terrible hour -- like 2 a.m- ish both nights. I probably will stay up on both nights. My daughter, thankfully, is not an early riser -- she gets up around 7:30 or so -- so I can get a couple hours of sleep in.

I just checked and although the earliest events are around 6 am my time, the men's events start at a very reasonable 12-12:30 noon! We're having a big combined 40th birthday party on Saturday (mine was a week ago, my husband's is three weeks from now) and the men's free will happen right when I'm getting my hair & makeup done. I was worried I'd miss it because of the party - my priorities are obviously in great order

Happy birthday to both of you!

I think the time has come that we as fans need to accept Jason as a true contender and with that comes hype and predictions and expectations. I also think Jason needs to get used to it as well. He has to learn how to be a favorite eventually and I think we are there. He can't remain the underdog forever. To me we are not seeing hype, we are seeing acknowledgement that he is good enough.

He enters NHK with the highest season score of anyone there including Hanyu. He *should* be able to make the final and he needs to learn do deal with that *should* pressure in order to make it to the next level. So I don't mind the hype and predictions. I think the time has come for Jason to shine. People have been saying for years "When Jason gets a quad he will be a real threat" and we are just seeing that. Even if others are doing more quads - it is very clear that the judges are rewarding what he is doing. This to me was all part of the plan and goal. This is just the new world we are living in...we all need to get used to it. I don't think we as fans should be timid in our support.

Beyond score. I do think Jason likely has the highest reputation advantage in Japan after Hanyu. He is known enough that he has a character based on him in Yuri on Ice...none of the other men do. When Wakaba was training at 7K and being interviewed, the clip included a mention of Jason - they did not have to do that, but that they did is likely because Jason is known to their audience and of interest to them. Also this ad has been floating around for a bit.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CxbYqLlUoAACx2p.jpg

Jason is the only person on that ad without a world medal. But he was who they picked to use. And they put him on top center in a stare down with Hanyu. In short... I don't think Jason is a nobody in Japan.

I do think we will see a 4S attempt if he is in a good position after the short - i.e. top three with at least a couple points above pewter. Though we could see two 4T attempts in the free. If he nails the 4T+3T in the short, i have to wonder when/if two 4Ts will appear in the free. I really wonder what their long term plans/goals are for the quads and layout.

Looking to be about 9pm for me both nights, so pretty good. Watching Jason is always good pre-bedtime viewing.

Thanks! I've been thinking about getting a second cat as companion for Sebastian so the timing is really good. He's been alone since his sister passed away and I think he needs another cat around during the day when I'm at work. Getting to play with kittens for 6-8 weeks is a nice bonus for me. (I'm not sure how he feels about that part yet. )

I'm on the Eastern time zone same as el Henry but, because of the holiday, I'll be off work Thursday-Sunday so I'll be ready to stay up late / get up early to cheer him on.

You've made really good points! But what is Yuri on Ice?

Regarding the poster, Hanyu is the only male World medalist competing at NHK. So they either had to leave him brooding alone over everyone else (who are all dramatically paired, e.g., Satoko v Anna) or choose one of the other men as a worthy "opponent" to fit the theme. I think it's great that they picked Jason! But I'm actually not surprised. Im pretty sure there were a lot of disappointed fans when he had to withdraw last year, and for me the fact that he was selected again this year, and also asked to do "The Ice" is a testament to his popularity and star power in Japan.

I'm actually curious as to whether they considered Nathan for the poster, because he is certainly the "rising star" on the forums and for a lot of columnists, and he had that dramatic tale of landing a million quads at Nats, being selected for the World Team (over Jason, no less) and then suffering immediate injury and having to withdraw from Worlds.

In any case, I hope it's a stellar competition and I'm hoping Jason is as brilliant as he was at SA. It's funny to hear him talk about his thoughts after landing the quad ("don't screw it up"!) because I think I kind of held my breath as he did each element and only relaxed when he went into that final spin.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks that spin was really weird? Did he leave out the layback on purpose because of his back or did he just screw up because his concentration gave out at the very end? Inquiring minds want to know! But I think he lost a level, so I'm betting it probably wasn't intended.

OT but I'm really looking forward to seeing Yuzuru here, too. There are a lot of parallels here between his season last year (underperforming and losing at Skate Canada) and this year. Wouldn't it be amazing if we saw a repeat of NHK last year -e.g. a pair of brilliant performances and a new world record?! Last year Boyang drove that competitive fire in Hanyu. Will Nathan and Jason combined have the same effect? Can't wait to see!

Yuri on Ice is anime about figure skating. You can watch it for free with subs (you'll have to watch ads though) here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/yuri-on-ice

IT's actually quite popular in Anime circles. I knew it was when one of my friends -- who is not a figure skating fan, but an anime fan-- recommended it to me, lol.

I've watched the first two episodes, but I haven't gotten to the part where they introduce the "Jason" character. Apparently one of the skaters -- maybe the same guy -- has a spin similar to one of Jason's spins.

I feel like he was starting to lose focus toward the end -- adrenaline was really high, clearly -- I noticed that he wasn't holding his spiral positions as long as he usually does. So I'm sure it will be back at NHK. Anyway, props to him for keeping it together on the jumps.

I hope all the skaters are safe. Nagano looks pretty far inland, so they should be OK.

Yuri on Ice is a new anime TV show about figure skating... and it is awesome! It is really well done and finds a good balance between general interest but still lots of skating - it really does cater to both types of fans very effectively. It appears to be well received. The show many focuses on a young skater (Yuri) from Japan and a Russian skater who decides to be his coach... and by about episode three his love interest. The characters clearly take inspiration from real skaters though there is debate as to who they are based on and how much - part of the fun of course! The last two episodes were basically the short and long program of the Cup of China and the creator has confirmed that the skater from the USA in those episodes was based on Jason. Also the fictitious Jason's coach is a female Rohene. It is worth checking out if you can tolerate animation. The thread about it is here if you want to know more.

Also you can see Rohene side by side here.

and Jason's here

The character's hair is basically a manbun version of Tristan and Isolde's hairdo.

True there are no other world medalists, but they do have a reigning European Championship medalist and the reining JGP champ. It would have been defensible to pick someone else, but they picked Jason, which i see as a sign that he is seen as a draw. Some have said "but Jason won't have home field advantage in Japan like he did at SA" well... he may not have home country rep, but he does have a favorable reputation... likely more than anyone else there.

Again Nathan is the reigning JGP champ and that should count for something. They may have thought about it, but in the end Jason was who they seemed to think would sell tickets.

He got a zero for one spin in the SP, but the Free was pretty good. His last spin was a level 3 and not sure why. He does sometimes get level 3 so i suspect it is just part of the plan... i.e. when and where to hold back. I would guess it was the spin equivalent of doing a double vs a messy triple. I was actually traveling during the free, so my first info on it was seeing the score. To be honest my first thought was "wow looks like he nailed the quad based on that score" I was rather shocked to see he did that well with a UR.

OT but I'm really looking forward to seeing Yuzuru here, too. There are a lot of parallels here between his season last year (underperforming and losing at Skate Canada) and this year. I mostly am just hoping for a healthy and happy Hanyu to be honest.

Oh no a 7.3 magnitude earthquake has hit Japan, in the same area as before. There is tsunami warning. Those poor people.

https://twitter.com/reutersworld/status/800808306025648128

I pray that Jason and Kori are safe.

47 miles from Sendai, where Hanyu is from. 147 miles to Nagano, where the competition is.

New York Times:

NHK is in Sapporo this year. Not Nagano.

USGS says the quake hit near Namie, Japan ... which seems to be approx. 100 miles from Sapporo.

ETA, correction: The distance is approx. 380 miles. Sorry for getting it wrong originally.

Hope everyone related to NHK Trophy is safe.

Okay -- I had thought it was in Sapporo! Anyway, I'm thinking that everyone should be okay, but let's send good vibes.

Stitch and Mrs P, thanks for the Yuri on Ice info - I checked out the clip and it looks really fun! I am pretty ignorant of anime, as in totally, so looking forward to learning about a whole new world. Funny they turned Rohene female!

The earth quake was apparently downgraded to 6.9 and 3 foot waves have been seen. And the power plant is safe I guess. Hopefully there are no fatalities and no aftershocks.

Mrs P I think I agree with you - I remember noticing the timing and was off - that he got to the spin too soon and that something is wasn't right - but I don't think I figured out it was the spirals. I think having watched it a few times, I've grown used to everything except the spin so I'm going to go look at Lombarfia or DLC to compare.

And yes, Stitch, I hope Hanyu is healthy.
