Jason Brown

Okay -- I had thought it was in Sapporo! Anyway, I'm thinking that everyone should be okay, but let's send good vibes.

Sorry :hopelessness:, I totally messed up the distance.

The distance from Namie to Sapporo is approx. 380 miles. (If I have it right this time ...)

NHK is in Sapporo this year. Not Nagano.

USGS says the quake hit near Namie, Japan ... which seems to be approx. 100 miles from Sapporo.

Hope everyone related to NHK Trophy is safe.

Thanks not sure where I got Nagano. I checked google and unless there's more than one Sapporo, it seems to be on the north island, 595 kilometers (370 miles) from Fukushima. But I don't know where Namie is, and I guess there could be secondary quakes? According to this picture, the quake was off shore.

https://www.google.com/amp/www.tele...3-magnitude-earthquake-strikes-fukushima/amp/

I think this is old in that it still says the quake was 7.4.

I think traveling might be more of an issue for the skaters than anything venue related on the quake. Who knows what air travel looks like and will look like for the next couple of days. I hope no one is stranded.

Can you imagine what would happen if it was canceled in whole or in part, like TEB last year? Remember the angst among skating fans?! That's a very selfish thought right now, and I really hope everyone - not just skaters -is okay.

It is not selfish, it is realistic and reasonable and normal. Things affect us in different ways and this is how it is relateable to you and many of us. I suspect there are going to be some competitions of some sort that are affected by this. We as skating fans can empathize a bit - no harm in that. I also think it is worth remembering crap can happen and affect things. Having backups just in case is not a bad thing. TEB would have been a great chance to start thinking about contingency plans... rather than a duct tape solution.

Yes, sorry again, I messed up the distance from Namie (near where the quake hit) to Sapporo.

I had posted a correction above ... as you were composing your post :ghug:.

Namie is near Fukushima and Sendai.

No worries!

I just keep thinking how hard this has to be on the country as a whole. Even if the skaters, coaches, volunteers, officials and fans are safe, as I pray they are, I imagine many of them must worry about loved ones.

I just want to be shallow and think about the competition, but until we know more I can't, quite.

Then again, I have never lived in a quake prone area (except Berkeley CA for a year where my house was actually on the San Andreas fault line) so maybe they take it more in stride, dunno. My only experience with one was a teeny tiny quake in Ecuador, that caused the computer screen I was looking at to wobble a bit -the Ecuadorian lawyer I was working with just said very matter of factly, oh it's an earth quake. So sanguine!

Actually, I take it back, that was not my only experience: I lived in NYC for years and was surprised to find out it sometimes has quakes. And I think I maybe felt a teeny one once.

Ah, enough rambling!

Stitch and Mrs P, thanks for the Yuri on Ice info - I checked out the clip and it looks really fun! I am pretty ignorant of anime, as in totally, so looking forward to learning about a whole new world. Funny they turned Rohene female!

I think they made Rohene a woman in a nod to Kori, since in YoI world, skaters only seem to have one coach.

You do not have to remind me of the shambles and the totally wrong result from TEB. I would like to hope that this time around if something had to be rescheduled or cancelled, they would come up with a result that is actually fair and right.

Yes. I hope it will be unnecessary. But I guess we'll just wait. I expect Jason should be arriving there soon unless flights have been canceled.

So many posts to read; now that Jason is finally going to skate!:yahoo: I am of the pagan mindset: I agree he needs to learn how to deal with the pressure, but I am not going to call down the wrath of the Skating Gods with hubris just yet ....

So there is not a "Men's SP" thread up in the NHK subforum; when *is* the SP in EST? (or even Central or Mountain, I can translate. :) ) I am going to try to get my niece to watch Yuri on Ice with me Thanksgiving Day ... my first anime and her first figure skating, well, if it works.

@Katmari, how wonderful you are to foster the kittens. I would be a complete foster failure, as they say in the trade, since every cat that has shown up in our yard is now in our house. Let us know what happens.

Here's Ice Network's schedule page, which is in EST -- http://web.icenetwork.com/schedule/2016/11/2016_nhk_trophy
The SP starts at 5:05 a.m.

I have checked it again the current schedule posted on the ISU event page and it checks out.

Happy Birthday! :hb:

Thank you! Now I just have to figure out how to watch the competition without appearing too rude - I already feel bad because I'm asking my hairdresser to sacrifice her Saturday for me!

I couldn't sleep last night (again) and so I watched episodes 2-6 of Yuri on my ipad in bed. I had seen episode one and liked it, but not enough to make a point of catching up with the episodes as they appeared. I definitely will now, it's hilarious! Leo is SO Jason, and I love the Rohene/Kori hybrid coach.

The delay on getting the NHK threads up was due to the fact that the CS event, Tallinn Trophy, started having events skated already; I had to do them first.

Thanks to Mrs. P, the men's threads are up :cheer:

So, NHK has a US technical controller and Japanese TS for men and ladies. Please tell me it could be someone there is someone other than Shin Amano? He was ATS in China...

https://twitter.com/neil_redknap/status/801586151303868416

The names can be seen on the ISU pages. http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1617/gpjpn2016/

Shin Amano is not among them.

For men, the TC is Steve Winkler of the U.S.
The TS has a name of Japanese origin. (Caveat that so do the All-American Shibutanis :).)

For ladies, the TC is Jeroen Prins of the Netherlands.
The ATS is the men's TS.

The other member of the tech panel for both men and ladies is from Italy.

Ah, thank you, Ice Coverage to the rescue! :)

I had visions of Jason with many <<<<<.

Shin Amano calls only what is real. If he called on Jason, we might see one or two < and maybe an e, but I doubt it.

And if he did call them, I would be glad that Jason and Kori would know there was a problem and take steps to correct it. Burying your head in the sand or having other people "protect" you does not fix a problem.

Sorry, but I will not accept the argument of harsh TS = bad. If there were more TS like Shin Amano, the sport would be far better off, because skaters could not limp by on favours from lenient TS.

I couldn't agree more. Shin Amano follow the protocol and holds all skaters to the same standards regardless of their nationality and seniority. I have heard from someone sitting right behind him at COC that he watched the replays of each jump over and over again and took tons of notes in between

It's not fair to skaters who are fully rotated to get the same BV as skaters who are short of rotation.
It's also not fair that some skaters are marked harshly on the technical side while other skaters at the same competition get away with under-rotation/edge calls.

I wish there are more Shin Amano out there.

Really what matters to me is that jumps are being called consistently, and clearly that isn't happening right now.

FWIW -- Shin Amano was the TS at JGP Brisbane and he did get an edge call on his 3Z and a < on his 3F in his 3F-2T-2Lo combo.

He was also the TS at Skate America 2013

Agreed that consistency is what's needed most. But instead of people whining and complaining about strict tech callers, I'd like to see them whine and complain about the soft ones. But when their favourites benefit, people don't complain.
