Possibly, too, he felt slightly intimidated by all the quad fire-power surrounding him at this event... he may have felt he was an unknown quantity going into the short. This is the first time he has faced this group with anything close to a quad. Now he is solidly in the mix, earning his spot, can measure his ability against the other competitors in real time, so can evaluate, assess, what is possible, probable for him in this group... he still got the 2nd highest PCS score, well deserved, and can build from there. He does this so well
Hoping against hope for a wonderful FS from him!! And, if not, I still LOVE watching him skate!![]()
Hmm. I would be surprised if he was intimidated by top level skaters with lots of quads - he's faced them many times before, most recently at SA. I actually see this as more akin to his FS at the Olympics, after a brilliant SP unexpectedly put him within striking distance of bronze.
A month ago, he was doing pretty well, but he was still that guy who hadn't yet landed a quad. Then at SA he not only landed one, but skated the rest of the program brilliantly and earned a very, very high score. And suddenly he was being talked about as a real contender. Pretty much everyone has been expecting him to take silver at NHK and qualify for the GPF. And I'm willing to bet that those expectations are coming from USFS as well as media and fans.
The good thing - and what's different from the Olympics - is that he still has a chance to come back in the FS.
Hopefully he'll right the ship tomorrow and we'll see a gorgeous FS.
