Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

His interview with nikkan sport after practice is soooo chill

He said he pays big attention to atmosphere of the venue this year even more because he wants to reach spectators hearts. This venue is closer to audience than NHK so he doesn't want to "over perform" ? make too much face expressions, that he wants to use all contrasts. Also he said he has managed to build a bit of construction of program in his mind, location of jumps, stsq. spins chsq and so on, now he needs to put it all together...

PICTURES & VIDEOS

To divert away from GPF anxiety,
Let's take a flashback friday look at Yuzuru's 4Lz attempt early this year.
He made the rotation, and as you can see from the slow mo, he very barely prerotated it. If only he can stand on his feet, it will be beautiful

[Videos] Compilation of NHK 2016

The best/worst thing about Chinese platform is that it bypasses all copyright issues, so you can watch the otherwise blocked Japanese programmes there.
This is a compilation of Yuzuru-related videos for 2016 NHK: http://www.bilibili.com/video/av7258739/

· Episode 1: Before NHK(Documentary & Interview)
· Episode 2: Men's Single SP (Yuzuru CUT for Universal) (Preview & Practice & Competition)
· Episode 3: Men's Single SP (Compilation of all Japanese Broadcast) (Exclusive scenes such as warm-up yoga exercise, Yuzu & friends, close-up shots, backstage etc)
· Episode 4: Compilation of GALA from all Japanese Broadcast (Exclusive scenes)
· Episode 5:A talk with Nobu
· Episode 6:NBC SP
· Episode 7:NBC LP
· Episode 8:Interview on Training
· This compilation may be updated in the future.

(It is not with English subtitles (because this is from a Chinese Fansite), but as you know, the Japanese media all have nice camera work - Yuzuru always looks so fine in their camera! It is still a pleasure to watch.)

Yuzu moments in NHK highlights (copy) broadcasted yesterday

NHK Trophy analysis of Yuzu's skating with Arakawa broadcasted by Asahi TV this morning. No translation yet for this video.

This set of photos of Yuzu went viral in Weibo in the past few days, with ~5000 reposts, 800+ comments and 1300+ likes. Quite an achievement (I don't even see this a lot from the most popular stars)

The poster said this is what "absolute proportion of body" is. A set of nine photos (credits to the original owner):

Did we see those CBC and NBC with fluff from NHK? Thank you, dasani!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg5Rtw81wmg&sns=fb

I think it's Johnny who says about Yuzu's 4Lo: "It's such a difficult jump because you have to jump with no assistance from a toe-pick. You have to rely on body positioning, edge and speed".

There's also some light fluff in the Universal HD broadcast of the Men's SP I uploaded in full last night:

https://youtu.be/6R4tTaaMQTA

Tracy Wilson & Ryan Bradley discuss Yuzu during the opening at 0:01, and also the final group warmup around 23:00, and a bit at the ending while showing final results 44:17.

I think they are doing the 2016 gesture?

PnG uploaded the video on their youtube channel (private for now but you can still watch it).
Anyone can kindly translate what he said?
It's a fabric softener and scent that Yuzu says he likes very much because he sweats a lot as an athlete. He says he'd put it on directly if he could.

Fan Art

Sorry if this has already been posted, but today I happened to encounter a beautiful skating boot jewellery with a silhouette of Yuzu, the number 330.43 and the date of 12 Dec 2015 on it

It was made by a Japanese jewellery designer last season and she recently made pendants for Adam Rippon and Ashley Wagner, as well. Adam and Ashley look pleased in this photo

Hi guys! Here's a new video I made, a small tribute to Yuzuru’s never give up attitude . Hope you guys enjoy it. And go, Yuzu!!

OTHER

This showed up in my recommendations. Not anything that much new from what already has been discussed here about his Edea Piano boots, but if anyone wants some actual video comments from a figure skater about it here it is. It starts roughly at 4:50.

why am i even watching these videos, i don't even skate. I'm too deep into this heLL.

Yuzu sent a beautiful bouquet (seimei color theme ) to Mansai Nomura performance in Osaka on 2 Dec.

Nathan said “Hanyu is a huge role model for me. I hope to be eventually what he is now.” in Philip Hersh article.

Shared by Asri @YHIFG, the poll of "Athletes you want to marry" by GOING (a Japanese tv show report of sports). Yuzu is 4th . 1st the baseball player (could not remember the name), 2nd Uchimura, 3rd Kei.

So I was watching an old video about the meaning behind Etude as I had no idea what it was about previously. Is the Hope & Legacy costume supposed to be connected to Etude's, where both are portraying nature but one is destructive and causes sorrow while the other is the beautiful and gives hope? Or something along that vein? Is that why the costumes are similar? I'm sorry if this was obvious or doesn't make sense, it just popped into my head so I thought I'd ask.

John Wilson's video of the GPF skaters using their blades. I knew Yuzu used JW Blades but I didn't know exactly which type of blades he used.

A brief translation of Yuzu's part (Source: 羽生结弦资讯台 Translated by: cherryncy @Golden Skate Please credit!)
1. (Pretends to be a reporter interviewing Hino) How would you improve? Hino: I don't have enough huge techniques yet. That will be improved later. Sorry for having you all to wait for my improvemen Yuzu: Above is the interview from the dinner.
2. Yuzu: I really enjoy the competition this time, I enjoy it till the very end of it including the GALA. I will continue to work extra hard, and hope that I can offer a performance that I can wholeheartedly smile to and be satisfied.

[Video] 161201 Nobu talks about Yuzu's dance video and his quad

Here's the video: http://www.bilibili.com/video/av7332597/

Translation (Source: the subtitle Translated by: cherryncy @Golden Skate Please credit)

REGARDING THE DANCE

Host: Mr Hanyu also danced to that right?
Nobu: Yes, I asked if he wanted to join and he happily joined in immediately. Great dance from him! Because he danced so well, I actually feel embarrassed to dance together
Host: Just to confirm, are Satoko and Keiji san...
Nobu: I think so too...Yes, they are not familiar with the dance and probably did not even watch the TV drama. But when we suggested to do it together, we all danced.
Host: Is Mr Hanyu able to dance so well from the start?
Nobu: We only danced to the chorus part, but he knows the entire choreography for the dance.
Host: (amazed) We tried this on (a dude)'s wedding too but it was really embarrassing.
Nobu: Yuzu is truly an expert. No wonder he's the King.
Host: We'll further discuss this later.

Host: Next is the section "Weekly sports" (...) Nobu's dance is so kawaii. Hanyu-kun's dance moves are ...
Another host: Really exaggerated, especially his waist.
Nobu: Really good at it, with the waist movements, hahaha
Host: How do you feel about it, Nobu?
Nobu: (Imitates Hanyu) It's dope to dance like this...haha
Host: Nobu-san is shrinking next to Mr Hanyu (due to Yuzuru's large movements)
Nobu: Yes, because of the limited space...But it was fun

REGARDING THE QUAD

Host: Regarding Mr Hanyu's new quad, could you please explain it to us? To start with "weekly sports", can you talk about the strengths of the "Absolute King" Yuzuru Hanyu (I loled at the word choice! Very anime!)
(.....)
Hanyu: 4lz. When this season finally comes to off season, it reaches the stage of "sliding" (he means, an imperfect land)
Narrator: Nobu will explain this to us later. Let us first appreciate Yuzuru Hanyu's LP on NHK. The programme begins with the new addition of 4Lo this season.
Nobu: Yes, right here. Although his axis is slightly tilted, look at his knees! The ability to make use of his flexible knees is Yuzuru's strength in jumps.
Host: Truly wonderful.

Narrator: 4Lo is the third hardest jump, aside from 4A. He executed the 4Lo, and creates the season highest record with over 300 marks. What ignites the "fire" in Yuzuru Hanyu's heart is the talented jumper, 17 yo USA teenager, Nathan Chen.
Narrator: Hanyu adds three quads in his free skate, which is a very challenging programme. On the other hand, Nathan Chen surpasses Hanyu by having four types and a total number of five quads. That is beyond the regular programme.
Hanyu: I am still unable to add in five quads in my programme. After watching Nathan Chen's programme, I feel like I am still doing basic stuff (whaaatttt)
Narrator: Therefore, Hanyu prepared a new jump, that is 4Lz. That is the hardest jump apart from 4A.
Hanyu: After hurting my left instep joint, the least burdensome jump to my left foot is 4Lz and 4Lo. Although I am not suggesting that it will be added to my programme next season, I think it is better to start (becoming an asset) as soon as possible.
Narrator: Jumping in figure skating creates an impact to your feet when jumping and landing. (YALL HAVE TO LISTEN TO 3:53. Hanyu gave a faint squeak when he fell. I can't be the only one thinking of a kitten) Yuzuru, having an injury on his left foot in April and then taking a rest, challenges the less burdensome 4Lo and succeed. We are all looking forward to his new 4Lz. We'll leave it to Nobu to explain to us the difficulty of 4Lz.

(...)

Host: Is it fine to skip 4F to 4Lz directly?
Nobu: (displays 4Lz) Look at the knee. Outward is Lz, Inward in Flip. When you look at the upper body, you know it is impossible to jump without twisting your body. You cannot twist less when you are jumping. It is difficult, but I have seen Yuzuru's 4Lz a few times in ice shows. It is gradually improving.
Host: Shoma learnt the 4F jump, right? So with the 4Lz, Yuzuru can have four types and can do five quads.
Nobu: Yes. And this will become a huge thing, after Nathan Chen.
(...)
Nobu: Because Yuzuru is now the record holder, by having 4Lo, people are already wondering if he will break the record again.
Host: If there is 4Lz, will he get to 350?
Nobu: yeah, how far can he get to?

Yuzu's popularity in Japan is no joke!

"An 88 year-old Yuzu fan submitted an article to the newspaper. She was really depressed because two people of her age passed away. However, in hospital, she was cheered up when watching Yuzuru's magnificent ice performance on Television. Yuzu to her, is a lil prince that brings her happiness to live on. She wishes Yuzu well and healthy."

For myself, I am really surprised at first that my parents also enjoy watching Yuzu's performance. They barely know anything about this sport and, to be frank, Yuzuru is too "immature" to their taste considering what they usually prefer. I guess there is this something about Yuzu's performance that appeals to many people of all ages and cultures.

There were some problems on lo and sal mostly on edge jumps, the ice is soft and other athletes also had same kind of problems mostly on edge jumps. Yuzu " Its kind of subtle feeling, having difficulty on creating good axis for jumps, so there are some problems, On the other hand , on positive note, skating itself is going very smooth"- again

Well he seemed calm and positive about it, so at least there is that

Just thought I'd share because I've found it useful, especially in these threads. There are extensions like Imagus for Chrome (and I think Firefox too) that shows pictures and gifs as a popup preview, even from Instagram, when you hover over the link, so you don't have to click on every link to see the pictures.

By the way Tracy Wilson is there so she will provide help how to skate in such ice condition I think.

I'm in bed with a bad cold, and had to call in sick to work. An hour after, the DHL truck came with my Amazon Japan order, which included Aoi Honoo II. As soon as i opened it, i saw Yuzu's cute face peeking from the package. I started dancing and screaming and i have to admit, the cold vanished for a few hours while i looked at the pics and tried (with moderate success!) to read the first pages of the book. I can't wait until tomorrow, although i would have preferred to call in sick tomorrow so i could cry at the stream at home ha ha

You're welcome. It was awesome to see him for real!

Yes, quite a number of skaters have complained about the ice, like Eric & Meagan if I'm not wrong. Shoma did too. Chan probably did too, considering how picky he is regarding ice condition (and I'd agree with him lol). I can only hope that the staff will fix this issue. The ice rink is way too warm in my opinion, I didn't even need my jacket, I was fine with just my sweater...

How was it? Seems like he didn't jump much and saved his energy. How was your impression seeing him skate in person? So nice to hear that you seem to be having fun hahaha

Yeah, heard complaints about the ice too. First heard it from junior skater. I wonder if they will fix it considering at TDF nothing was changed much :dbana:

Salchow and Loop will be big challange on this ice, maybe they should consider to do 2 quad toes in free :slink: or at least quad toe in short

Yes he wasn't jumping that much, mostly feeling the ice and being cautious (that's how I feel it anyway).
As for me I had this BIG grin when I spotted him and Pooh during the ice-surfacing. And we were sitting so close to the ice, it was impressive how much he stood just a few meters from us. He's soooo cute lol!
And we weren't far from the entries, so we heard the fans singing HBD to him, it was adorable!

Thanks for sharing. I hope you can see many special moments like these. Your heels are extremely beautiful. It's a treat to my eyes. I trust and believe that everything will be okay tomorrow. Yuzu ganbatte!
Thank you all for keeping us informed about our prince. Anxiety and nervousness decrease with updates.

that may or may not change. Last time at Finlandia, on the first day I was too warm with a T-shirt and my jacket open, and on the third day I was freezing my butt off even with a T-shirt, sweater and the winter jacket zipped up to my ears :roll9:

Isn't it nice when you are at a practice, waiting for the skaters and then you suddenly see pooh, and know yuzu will be just around the corner? It always makes me happy:love:
