I actually dropped by to ask... I was explaining to someone that the skaters we see in these competitions call themselves "amateur/competitive skaters," that being a Professional Skater is it's own profession, and many competitive skaters retire from competition and then go Pro.
I could have sworn Yuzuru had an interview at some point where he corrected the interviewer on the term? Can anyone help? Or was I dreaming this up....

hmmm, has yuzuru ever done spirals and/or layback spins? just wondering because he is flexible as a male skater (but maybe not flexible enough for a classical layback or some of the crazy positions that some women skaters can get into )

I sort of want to do a poll to see if people think she actually has a crush or if she just admires him . I really tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but the evidence is becoming a little overwhelming, especially when I think of myself as a young girl in her position. She is doing everything I'd be doing .

i think she just admires him. i hope. she's too young for him anyway. besides, Evgenia is not my cup of tea in figure skating.

On another topic, I've added different English Subs for Yuzu's Notte Stellata exhibition from NHK Trophy. Special thanks to Lys for looking over the Italian to English translation! I don't think English can fully capture the nuance of the song in Italian, but I think that this translation is less literal than the one found online. I did end up doing three different versions of the same exhibition video though (they all have different merits, and quality of video!).

Yes, Ishida Sui tends to make birthday artwork for his characters, but he was late for a couple of them (Uta's birthday was on Dec 2nd, Mutsuki's was on Dec 14th).

"Since I mostly finished some long-awaited work, here's 14-day-late Uta-san. Next is Mutsuki and... Hanyu-kun?"

He's really sweet to his fans (he works himself too hard for us, I swear that man never sleeps), so he might really make a drawing. It wouldn't be the first time. I think he was surprised to learn that Yuzu was seen with TG merchandise.

No you are correct. But the terms now is a bit not so textbook (?) than what it was years ago, I think. Back then once you go pro, you are not supposed to compete in the amateur level anymore. There are even competition for pro skaters. Partially because pro skaters do more ice shows and don't need permission from their Feds to go to pro competition/ice shows that they want. Back in the days, when you go to non-sanctioned ISU events/competitions you would lose your eligibility in competing in ISU events (olympics included). Pro events are not held by ISU.
It was the case prior to 1994 (?) olympics, where they finally allowed pro skaters to go back competing (thus petrenko, boitano, katarina witt etc compete again) in ISU competition. I don't think the ISU is so strict about this anymore, and skaters don't strictly go "pro" anymore, they just announced retirement, enabling them to return to competition and go back competing if they want to?

The rules said so but is it still that strict though? Japan Open is a non-sanctioned event (though it is organized by JSF) and many retired + still competing skaters participate there. I don't see them being banned from ISU competition. But I also remember just few years ago, Plush was banned because he went on ice shows without Rus Fed permission and was sanctioned for it. I think iSU in general is just more lenient now, especially since they can't afford being too strict when the sport is dying

Not that I know of at least. I really don't think so.
I know they abandoned the 1992 ruling in 1995 and then shifted to what we have now, so it might be that these days they've reformulated it (even if unofficially) to sanctioned by the Federations equals all right, less work for them too and as you say, the sport isn't exactly flourishing so they settled for that. It would explain the JO that is organized by the JSF.

Yeah, that's the problem with trying to fit an essay into a sentence... the explanation I've been typing up has already reached three paragraphs explaining the topic, complete with videos of ice shows where we see competitive skaters hired alongside professional and retired-competitive skaters. (And if those videos happen to feature Yuzuru and/or his idols... and if they happen to be HD and showing Yuzuru with gorgeous costumes and programs... He just happens to have wonderful ice show programs and he happens to fit well with the topic. I'm totally not trying to convert more people into watching Yuzuru skate, nope. )

I was just trying to find clips or articles or references where we had a currently competing figure skater refer to themselves with the terms "amateur" or "competitive" instead of "professional"- that way I won't have to go "Just trust me on this." I'm pretty sure Ishida-sensei was referring to all the work he's had recently (omake for the 9th volume of TG:re, the usual 2~3 illustration card designs distributed to stores for the release of the volume, the 100 character stickers he designed for a magazine, the Tokyo Ghoul booth at this year's Jump Festa, illustrations for the fourth TG novel: Quest, and keeping up the weekly chapters), which is why he was so behind with his usual character B-day illustrations. Then there's Kaneki (the main character)'s birthday in a few days...

So if he does make something for Yuzu, it would be sometime during the double-issue break this week or in two weeks!

This type of smile is not the seductive kind. It is the Zhang Ziyi type of smile in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the "I give this smile because I am suppose to be a sweet girl but you and I both know that I have the sword that you want" smile.

In this case, it is the "You and I both know that this will be the best program that will win this event" smile.

You can join as many ice shows or even non-sanctioned events/competitions as you like and do not lose your eligibility for ISU competition as long as you got your national Fed permission (e.g for Yuzuru it is JSF for Plushenko it is Russian Fed), whether it is during competition period or not. Plushenko's problem was because he did not get Rus Fed permission. It is written in the handbook I think, you can look it up on ISU website. I don't think the term pro meant much nowadays, because you can return to competition easily even when you are retired. There is also no prominent pro championship like back in the days (e.g world professional figure skating championship), meanwhile ISU has adult skating nowadays. There is even a "comeback skaters" policy that ISU set up (Skaters/Couples who were previously seeded (placed 1 to 6 within the past 10 years at a ISU World Figure Skating Championships) and got assignment for GP series. This can only be done once, though.

Those are two very confident staring into the audience, I love them both Btw I noticed that, in rare cases both Yuna and Yuzu have similar facial expressions, like for example when they sit in the kiss&cry and curiously wait for their scores to show up. Maybe I just imagine things but I really noticed this after watching Yuna's performances one billion times and Yuzu's one million times.
