"A little joke"? "Sense of humor?" when someone is seriously ill and feels so responsible for his absence ? You totally lacks consideration as a human. Get out of here.
And you need to chill a bit. But that's the thing about being a fan of someone, being Yuzu or another skater: there will always be over-reacting fans. :) Better to ignore them.

I believe he withdrew after getting JSF's approval and JSF already promised him the spots to 4CC and worlds. Otherwise, he would've chosen to compete to earn the spots even if he is sick. He is someone who competed after the collision in coc and right before his surgery in 2014 national, so he could qualify for GPF and earn the worlds spot after all.

JSF approves of his withdrawal because JSF actually doesn't want to force their top skaters to do Asian games. They only issued that public statement requiring their national champs to compete in Asian games because they are the host and the public expects their best skaters to be at Asian games. But JSF also knows none of their top skaters wants to compete at Asians Games if that means missing out on 4CC next year. (Asian Games has no value to any top skaters or to the skating community. Sorry, but this is true.) If Yuzuru competes in national and loses, and thus not compete in Asian games, or he competes in national and wins and chooses to not compete in Asian games, either way it makes Yuzuru look bad in the public. Letting Yuzuru withdraw is JSF's way to let Yuzuru skip Asian Games and compete in 4CC without making him look too bad in the public.
Well, the skaters do submit their choices for competition prior Nationals. But Yuzu has learned the hard way to always put health first. I'm not sure he'd have competed even if his spots were not guaranteed. We'll never know but at least we know he'll go to Worlds at the minimum.
Regarding the AWG it's mandatory for national champions apparently, but if JSF end up deciding not to force, it would be nice. As far as I know, the only top skater who expressed the wish to go there so far is Satoko, who's going for her 3rd title this week-end (GO Tiny Queen!), so it would be nice for other skaters who aren't the top ones to go there as well. As a side note, Satton also wants to go to 4CC despite the competition being only a few days apart. So if Yuzu did participate and win... well I still think he'd go to 4CC and not AWG (too much "but" and "if" lol)

About his absence because of flu, I think JSF has a rule (or there’s unspoken rule) that they have to withdraw someone getting flu, since it is an infectious disease has the high possibility to pass it to someone. It must not have been Yuzu's personal decision. In japan, if you have flu, your absence at school is not regarded as this. When Marin missed JGPF, it was the same situation. She went to the competition and practiced under fever of 39c, but one morning her examination about flu got positive, so they decided her absence.

It's possible, but I don't think it's likely because he has competed with far worse conditions when he had to qualify for some important competitions or when the competitions are really important.

Come on. Yuzuru obviously wanted to win another National Title. He would have competed if he could, regardless of whether that would force him to do another competition. He does care about that title.

Or that he learnt from his past mistakes that skating while you are in a bad condition would do noone any good? Someone with a fever would find it hard to stand on two feet let alone land quads and triples. And since there is exception for sickness and injuries to skip Nationals and still qualify, why would he force himself again and make the same mistake he did before. I don't think there is any further hidden meaning like you seem to be implying to be honest.

Yuzu can be considered to automatically qualify for those big events as in the past two years he was the only male skater to medal in the senior championships (thanks for whoever reminds me that). He does not fight for spots, he fights for himself. It must be really hard for him to give up on competing in front of home crowd; the chance to defend his title, to deliver two decent programs, even to land the second half 4S3T in the real competition. Hope he wont get too mad on himself and overtrains again, that's my only concern. So far this season he has been really good controlling himself.

I agree! I believe Hanyu learned his lesson from Boston worlds. If you're not 100% you shouldn't expect to perform 100%. Hanyu is sick with the flu and he has asthma. Skating in a cold arena trying to land quads would most likely end with him getting sicker or injuring himself.

Same. He learned the hard way what over-training does, so hopefully he won't be reckless. Does he have any planned shows in January? It would be good to see him going back to Toronto asap after he's fully healed (well maybe his university work will keep in Japan for a little while, but it's better than shows).

Also, this is his final year in college right? So he might be very busy with college works during this time till April. Can he manage to finish college in time? I wonder if he can graduate normally and not late.

Yes, it is final year if he doesn't decide to go for another degree (but I suppose if he does, he'll retire first. Machida did retire to focus on his study, after all). But I have no idea how college graduation work when you're a high-level sportsman. Mao graduated during the year she took a break. So maybe Yuzu will graduate in a later date? But if he can graduate like normal students this year, he'd gain much free time to train for Olympics.

He’s been doing an amazing job keeping up with his undergrad studies. I’m more curious if he’ll go to graduate school right after (while still competing) Its a wonder he's not sick more often, with the stress and all.

I think he mentioned somewhere that he will do a master afterwards? Likely he will do that after retiring.

My Professor in college told me to not go to class when I had flu, so i could see JSF doesn't want Yuzu to be in the arena and made everybody sick ...

Lol he's the very definition of an overachiever. Or as my parents would call it, the perfect child  lol

Not sure it is not planned yet or not announced yet:slink:We Toronto seems to be in a good shape this year at least no one gets flu around me, unlike last year. So come back to us early Boy!

Thanks for the info mikaboo! This is the ceremony schedule, not the broadcast schedule right? Wew, that is just 1 month away from 4CC.

I guess he will attend it (Big Award) this year. He did so last year although he was trying to go to 4CC.

It feels like it may be a refreshing experience for him. He can meet up with other top athletes, like Uchimura. He won the Olympics again. There’s a recent new clip yuzu deeply felt with Uchimura’s way of practice and words. His words most impressive for yuzu were “ It” might be easier if I hadn’t won” (sorry, can you see the meaning of this translation for “勝たない方が楽だった”?) The one who is allowed to win again and be expected to do so is only one, a previous gold medalist. Uchimura is the person and the one actually won, beat everything like pressure in spite of adversity.

ETA: I found the news clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oPhVEaJeaA (before GPF, around 0:50-5:30)

And I remember I promised you that I would summarize Daisuke’s comments in a news clip at NHK cup. I’ve kept it in mind and waited for a chance to tell you about it. The main two points Daisuke mentioned at that time were, 1.Sutamina at latter half 2. 4 quads. About point 1, Dai referred that he lost his usual brilliant skating at NHK cup in a latter half because of his lack of stamina. But he strongly stated that we don’t have to worry about his stamina. It is caused by his late start this season for his injury and it’s certain it will gradually be settled. About point 2, he says what he should be aiming for is completing 4 quad until Nationals considering the Worlds next year. It’s a pity he lost his chance of it. Even if it is not totally clean, landing 4 quads would be a confidence for him towards 4CC and worlds. Anyway, get well soon, yuzu!

Thank you hamaguri! :thank:
I guess if he is healthy and confident enough to have adequate training, it is not really a bad idea to attend the ceremony. I would think he probably would have already feel bad for skipping Nats and may compensate it also by attending this. :)

I also don't think his stamina is the problem. It does look like his 4S combo problem is a timing or mental thing, because he can land other jumps after that just fine. Considering his late start, I dare say his performance actually exceed my expectation

In Japan there's even a law that forbids you to attend school if you are diagnosed with flu as it's highly infectious. In 2014 it was during 5 days after the symptom appeared (that day not included) AND 2 days after the fever is gone. Yuzuru is reported to have fever yet as of today. Appearing in public with flu is considered highly dangerous and antisocial indeed! Yuzuru is an instinctive athlete who just goes to a competition at all costs if he can not be forbidden!

Are you allowed to take flu shots if you're an athlete? I know it won't necessarily prevent you from getting ill, but it will reduce the severity of it to some extent.. provided they correctly anticipated the active flu strains for the year and included them in the shot.

Toronto does not have much flu? Great... but just wait. There is a nasty cold here in SW Ontario that is much worse than any flu I've ever had. Severe chest congestion, difficulty breathing, coughing non stop, hoarse voice....I didn't develop pneumonia, but many of my patients were hospitalized because of it.... and this is the giving and receiving season!! I would have rather had the flu, to be honest...

I hope he just rests until the New Year... time for training is after he has recovered... that is one lesson he learned from the events before London, so let's hope he remembers that and does not play catch up and trains too hard... that is when injuries occur, or you fall ill again.

I was wondering the same about flu shots. Considering how he's come down with the flu before and it affected his preparation for worlds I would've expected him to get vaccinated each year, unless he's allergic or athletes aren't allowed to get vaccinated for whatever reason. It made me wonder if Japan puts an emphasis on getting the vaccine or not since Marin also got the flu.

I don't see why they wouldn't be able to as it doesn't contain any banned substance. Unless your Meagan Duhamel, since they're made with eggs. ;)

And a vaccine doesn't make you invincible, it just decreases your chances of getting the virus and it can lessen the symptoms, but you are still susceptible to the virus.
