2016-2017 State of U.S. Men Figure Skating

Nathan once again is a nominee in the male category for Team USA Awards . (And the Shibs are nominees in the team category :).)

Voting for December nominees ends on Mon Jan at 11:59 pm ET.

(The link for voting is not working at the moment (at least for me):

Never got around to mentioning that Nathan was on the USOC's list of Top 16 Men of 2016 ... along with the likes of Michael Phelps, Ashton Eaton, and the Men's Basketball Team.

(But I'm sad to say that even with her drought-ending World silver medal, Ashley was not included on the comparable Top 16 Women of 2016 list.)

NBC has started shooting stuff for Nats coverage :

Just noticed that Vincent Zhou signed a contract with IMG in November. His agent is David Baden, no less.

Emmanuel Savary has landed clean 4S at competitions.

Happy to hear it. Thanks for making note of Emmanuel :yay:.

Good things coming for Vincent, he'll probably do some more skating shows with this. I've been following David on IG, he's also D/R's and Javi's agent, among others. Not bad to be in the company of World Champs!

Thank you, Tavi .
And thanks to Jackie Wong  for a great interview :luv17:.

I am hopelessly biased, of course, but I would say that Max's like-ability is off the charts in this interview.
He is so open and honest. And he sounds so energetic and cheerful about everything, even when mentioning that he does receive some negative comments.

His explanation for why he started designing his own costumes is incredibly sweet. Bittersweet, really -- makes me want to give him a hug :ghug: -- but he says it in a positive way, and his compassion for others is just amazing. His thoughts about social media make me want to cry :sad4: and give him another hug :ghug:, but he sounds very comfortable in his own skin (thick skin :)) and able to shake things off.

I think Nathan is looking awesome in respect to competiveness with others; not sure I want to promote him versus Rippon if healthy or Brown or even Aaron. I can't believe how Nathan is in the top 16 male athletes in the US just crazy compared to Ashley. His Grand Prix skates are great but not sure he deserves to be considered at the upper echeolon with other US athletes. That being said Chen right now looks to have healed amazingly fast and on a path to a US title and world medal. Hanyu and Chen and Umo appear to be the leaders with strong contention from Javier and then maybe Boyang.

Why would he not be considered in the top echelon? He has more quads than the other competitors and he's a GPF Silver medalist. I don't think it's question of top echelon in the US. He's one of the top in the world right now and his scoring potential can be higher if he shows consistency.

And luckily for Nathan, his competitive record at lower levels proves that, while he might make mistakes due to his technical difficulty and bad 3A, he's not a headcase.

^Going back to juniors Nathan has never finished below 4th in international competition. Pretty amazing.

A good chunk of Max's new bullfighter SP as posted by Coach Tom Z:

Tavi, Thank you so much for posting that clip of Max. You can tell he's really feeling this new SP and I think the Character fits him like a glove. I truly hope he skates his heart out at Nationals. I have always liked his drive and his tenaciousness as he simply refuses to quit and is always looking to move forward. The fact that he took on this new SP at this point in the season was quite risky. There's a saying "No Risk, No Reward" and I hope this risk pays off in a nice reward of a second championship for Max.

Rotational speed is too low to complete the rotation. It's a fantasy unless something drastically changes.

We'll see. My instinct is Adam will do the 4Lz and 4T next year for the Olympics. With Adam out, Nathan and Max will likely go 1, 2 this year.

Don't count out a clean Jason!

*shakes head* I will never understand how anyone can listen to Max when he talks and still dislike him. How?

Now please excuse me while I pick myself up from that wallop in the feels.

I doubt anyone dislikes Max as a person, even if his skating isn't to everyone's taste.

Anyway, it was a great interview. Now I'm rooting for Max to make the Worlds team (alongside Nathan, whom I think NEEDS to be on the team if we want any shot at getting 3 spots back). But if I listen to a Jason interview I'll probably switch to Jason....and so on and so forth. The wonders of a good interview :agree:.

Sincerely hoping Max at Nationals skates with the verve and passion he has in his interview and that he had at Skate America last year. His Nationals LP last year lacked that same energy and oomph, but based on listening to him, I think he'll bring it this year. I suspect he will need it in order to beat Jason.
