I was thinking about this exact same thing. What SHOULD the scores have been. Looks pretty good on paper. My guess is that it would be mighty tough to pull it off. I think Mr. Piantao can do it though.

I really thought Shoma had it in him to win, especially after landing his 4F because it seemed he was *on*. His lp is wonderful and his PCS are better than Nathan's, imho, particularly in performance and interpretation. It is a complete program and he always commits to the character. I truly believe what he is trying to sell. I hope he can go clean at World's and then we'll see where those chips are falling.

Does anyone have Shoma's total score if he had landed everything in the LP? Would that have been enough to beat Chen, or is it impossible with the current layout?

I usually don't like to compare competitions scores as each one is different and Nathan FS beat Shoma's at GPF, but just as comparison at the GPF Shoma's 3A scored 10.6 and his sequence
jump scored 17.59 for a total of 28.23. Here at 4CC the 3A scored 6.35 and the sequence jump 3.55 for a total of 9.90. Shoma lost a lot of points on these two jumping passes which hypothetically
could have made the difference between bronze and gold.

Thank you, very interesting indeed! There is some talk of Nathan adding something even more spectacular, probably pushing the base value even more...urgh. I just watched a recap of the Men's event on Eurosport and I must say, even without any bias that I'm very aware I have, Nathan Chen's program falls short. He is not connecting to the music and audience at all. Quads are nice and all, especially if you see them live but I felt nothing watching him skate. And I think the music is horrible, and I want it to stop. And to think that I hated Shoma's music when I first heard and saw the program. It's so amazing that he is able to turn my opinion like that. First skater who ever did it. Normally I like a program or dislike it and that's it. Amazing.

Since Nathan was off the ice for so long (due to his surgery), I think he did the best he could with his programs for this year. In the beginning of the season, he could still barely do a 2A, so it's amazing that he's now doing a 3A, even though it is a little wonky. I don't really find either one of his programs captivating (for lack of a better word). I have a feeling next year will be a totally different story. I have a feeling he will put in more time with Marina. I am happy to see him do well, but of course I love Shoma's skating! For me, Shoma's programs are so good this year! He had to learn an entirely different way to skate to do the tango with the gorgeous lines, expressiveness, sharpness of movements, and musicality. He has a REAL program, and I think the judges recognize that.

Maybe during the off-season when we're suffering from No Shoma News-itis we should discuss what kind of programs we want to see from Shoma next year. And (the always burning question) who should choreograph for him (besides Coach Fluffy).

Although I would love for Shoma to change his little formular he has going in the choreography (I think that Nessun Dorma and the Tango piece are structurally quite similar) I'm not quite sure if the next season would be the perfect time to go to another choreographer. After all Fluffy & Yamada know Shoma best and can perfect the program and choreography with Shoma right on the move. For me personally I would dislike if Shoma found another coach or team before the Olympics, the way Yuzuru did. I hated that he left Nanami Abe to train with Brian Orser. I can't deny that Brian helped him and it was probably the best move for him but I honestly disliked all of Yuzuru's programs until Seimei. And even now, when I read that Brian Orser thinks that Let's go crazy and Hope and Legacy are just stepping stones, when they are simply perfect for Yuzuru I have to roll my eyes. I just couldn't understand how they thought skating to another "Romeo & Juliet" would work after he so passionately arrived on the scene with the Baz Luhrman piece. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think Fluffy can make an iconic program for Shoma without any foreign interference. (Which she already did, like several times) I think the japanese choreographers and coaches should be more confident in their skill. Honestly, people from overseas should come running to the japanese coaches and not the other way round. I totally trust into Fluffy's senses and Yamada's expertise.

I think if Shoma does a good SP & LP at Worlds, he should finish at least 4th. I'm not sure how that would stack up against Hanyu, Chen, and Fernandez. I think having the good performances will do more for his confidence and progress than the result.

Fluffy really knows how to bring out the best in Shoma with her choreography. I do like the touches though that seem very Stephane-like. Plus the couple new things that Shoma added to the SP seem as if they may have come from his working with David Wilson. Question if some other things come from Shoma's work with Vladimir Fedorov. Definitely would not want to mess with their recipe for success going into the Olympic season, but I can see where all these new experiences for Shoma are terrific.

I have to try to find an article about Fluffy where it talked about her work as a choreographer. I was stunned to read about all the people she had worked with. Very interesting. She's pretty amazing.

I don't have a crystal ball to predict the outcome of Worlds but imo Shoma has as much firepower to be on the podium
as Yuzu, Javi and Nathan. Heck a lot of folks had him off the podium at 4CC. I think a medal will do more for his confidence
and progress than a good performance. Just saying...

Did anybody else just love the face he gave at the end of his free skate when he slapped his hands on his face cause of the triple axel falls and lack of combos ? 😂 I just find that hilarious

the expression by our Mr. Piantao was already compared vis-a-vis on Twitter to Edvard Munch 'Scream' painting

Shoma was within Gold's reach here, at 4CC. I told people in the comp thread they shouldn't underestimate him, but at the moment I'm fine if they do. The others mentioned his face after the long, He's smiley all around soon after the Munch-face with Fluffy but I bet inside he was boiling from frustration. He's angry. He's hungry. He knows he can do it, he knows he has it in him. I hear a lot of commenters saying they think he could be the one who gets the gold. I honestly believe he could be World Champion this year already. I don't want him to be, because he shouldn't go into the Olympics as current World Champion but he can do it.

Let's look at his current competition. They need to be clean to get high scores. Javier and Patrick don't have a cushion anymore due to the tech score. They need to be clean. Yuzuru clean will be hard to beat, but it can be done because Yuzuru is not consistent. Nathan Chen seems to be at this moment of his career. How long that will last I don't know. If he becomes the Med of Men's it will be hard but a perfect Shoma can beat him.

All this is nicely said but Shoma needs to focus. His 3A mistakes are so frustrating because we know he can do this in his sleep usually. Sure the perfect quads took a lot of strength, but I believe in him. I believe he can be on top . This year or next year, let's just wait and see and cheer.

Oh, please share, if you find it! She seems like such an interesting person and I know so little about her work outside of what she does for Shoma.

Hmm, while the Olympic season is usually not when most skaters would want to take huge risks, I think that this might be the right time for Shoma to broaden his horizon artistically and a helpful way of doing that would be to work with (a) different choreographer(s), who push(es) him out of his comfort-zone. Although he already has a distinct style it would be an opportunity to even further distinguish himself from the rest of the field! :) After all his primary role model was never afraid to challenge himself when it came to expressing himself in new ways, even in the 2009/10 Olympic season and it worked out splendidly for him! Shoma has proven to be a remarkably ambitious guy - both technically and artistically, so I think he could pull sth. like that off too. (succeeding while straying from his "safe" repertoire)

Not to take anything away from the awesomeness that is Team Higuchi/Yamada  - they're highly experienced and gifted and because they understand Shoma's weaknesses and strenghts so well, always bring out his best qualities - it would still be great to see Shoma taking his own spin on other people's work. (His new David Wilson choreographed EX is a promising start in that direction.) It's a sign of greatness, if you can take ANY choreography and make it your own - he has the talent to do that and I'd love to be able to witness this as soon as possible. For the Olympic season it would be great to see him try sth. edgy in his SP (he already headed into that direction with "Legends", which I think worked pretty well) and then he can still play it relatively "safe" in his FS. Maybe Kenji Miyamoto, Pasquale Camerlengo, Shae-Lynn Bourne, Tom Dickson or Massimo Scali would be good choices - I think they're all tried and tested enough and very apt at creating sth. unique, which is closely tailored to their clients' strengths.

But then again, because he's already so accomplished - I think we, or at least I, sometimes forget, that he's only 19 and the artistic maturity he displays for that age is - with very few exceptions - head and shoulders above his peers! Most skaters start developing that side much later. Taking the technical difficulty he incorporates in his programs into account, he's probably even peerless atm in combining the two. Can't repeat it enough: He is magnificently exciting and has so much potential, that it feels like the sky is the limit, so I just wanna see him fly as high as possible!

Honestly, people from overseas should come running to the japanese coaches and not the other way round.

100% agree with this. Look at all the emerging riches Japan has to boast in the choreography department alone: Machida, Suzuki, Miyamoto, Reed, Higuchi - they're all still shamefully underrated internationally! Not sure, if it's due to a lack of confidence on their part though. I guess one of the biggest challenges is the language barriere. Kenji is the only one, who has forayed a bit into international territory so far and his popularity might rise even further now that he has the YoI credit on his resume. Hopefully more foreign skaters give the other ones a chance as well - they definitely deserve it! Cathy even has the advantage of being fluent in both English and Japanese! :)

I am guessing Shoma will do another "Legends" type of SP next year, just because he's so good at it. I think they did Ladies in Lavender to have a contrast from "Legends", and now next year they can go back to a style that is so uniquely his. Who else besides him can be a magician like that (as Kurt Browning calls him)? For the FS, I am trusting that Fluffy is already thinking about his music for next year too.

And this is the guy people said would become another Kanako Murakami if he stuck with Fluffy and Yamada?! I think not! (no offense meant to Kanako). If he ever left them, it would be a dark day. And I truly hope he stays in Japan.

I couldn't help but wonder if this was a bit of a stamina issue too, and if it had been, would he admit it? Lately his 3As have been pretty decent. People do seem to underestimate him, and it used to really annoy me. Now I feel like "Go ahead and underestimate him so he can fly under the radar!" My biggest hope is that they don't mess with his jump layout before Worlds like they did last year. Hopefully they won't think they need to this year.

Kanako was never that ambitious. I think you have to have the drive and ambition to get that olympic gold. Not every skater is ready to sacrifice everything for this sport. Yamada was also Mao's coach before. I think she is a good coach with so many years of experience, and Fluffy and Yamada...they've practically raised him (on the ice, not as a person) I think sometimes it works to go to another coach or country but I honestly believe that Shoma is not that person. And like I wrote he doesn't need to go elsewhere as I firmly disagree with those who thinks he should leave, as the results say something different and people love his packaging. It's good that Jfed has Yuzuru. They probably will leave Shoma alone regarding his career. Or not. Who knows?

Any of these choreographers would work well with Shoma, I'm sure. Interesting that at the beginning of the season we were wondering if Shoma would EVER get a real EX. Now he has 3 -- 2 done by other choreographers.

I guess we're perceiving this differently then. ;) To me this year's SP is closer to a representation of "his style", while imo "Legends" was a successful experiment, that I would love to see more of.

I agree, that staying in Japan with Fluffy and Yamada as his main base (and occasionally working with overseas specialists) is crucial to his success! Forget the naysayers - there is no ONE right formula. What works for Shoma doesn't have to work for Kanako. For Shoma the current coaching arrangement seems to be in his best interest - personally and career-wise.

True!

Whatever it is, loss of concentration or stamina, I'd rather have it to be stamina, because that's one thing he can really work on. If it's more a mental thing, it could happen again, it's harder to rule out. If he has the strength all will come together. So honestly I hope it is stamina and not mental.

Can we watch Asian Winter Games somewhere? And are these results official? Maybe he can break 200 in his long. I think it's a less pressure event, so let's see.
