2016-2017 State of U.S. Men Figure Skating

Picture this last group at Nationals next year:

Max, Joshua, Jason, Adam, Nathan, Vincent (in no particular order).

Can you imagine? Can you imagine if they all skated perfectly? We would all die.

:dbana: :dance2: :dbana: :sad4: :dbana: :ghug: :dbana: :yay: :dbana:

The following skaters have finished in the top six previously (in order of number of top six finishes) during this Olympic cycle (3 Us Nationals; in order of highest placement, then number of top six finishes):
Nathan (2 1st, 3rd)
Adam (2 1st, 2nd)
Jason (2 1st, 3rd)
Max (2 2nd, 4th)
Vincent (1 2nd)
Josh (1 3rd)
Grant (2 4th, 4th)
Ross (3 5th, 5th, 6th)
Jeremy (1 5th-- keeping him on the list until he says officially he's not coming back in' 18)
Alexander (2 6th, 6th) ...

Sorry to be a dummy, but why is Adam -- with one gold and one silver -- not at the top of the list?

And no not accounting that those just outside the top six but in the top 10 like Andrew T and Tim D. Plus Alexei rising from juniors...

It's going to be brutal.

Why is Nathan second on the list? He's the current champion.

That is going to be one awesome showdown. My dream olympic team is probably different from everyone esles.

Nathan
Max
Josh

I really wish we could send more than 3.

Well, since everyone else has supplied a correction, I will too  Max has: 3rd (2014), 4th (2015), 2nd (2016) and we don't talk about this year.

Nooo, I want Max, Jason and Josh. Mostly because the world could not handle that much cute and adorable.

Nationals was just so rough on me between Gracie and Max I was a wreck.

I actually love Chen and Zhou, I have always been a fan of the gutsy jumpers. I also do think Chen is rapidly improving in artistry. That being said Max is and will aways be a favorite of mine and someone that I just will always enjoy watching. I have always loved that Max was going for things others were not, it was always awesome to see. He also was working so hard to play catch up to those with better skating skills and last year he rightfully should have won. I agree there is a double standard, and the way people have treated Max is just horrendous.

On another note I was overjoyed he was skating to the Lion King this year as it was my favorite film as a kid. It's sad how things turned out.

What a lovely and heartfelt post! :agree: I too appreciate Nathan, Vincent, AND Max, for reasons similar to those expressed.

Regarding Max, I think the biggest thing holding him back has been his lack of consistency in international competitions. His sheer athleticism is where he shines, but he tends to have doubled or popped jumps and/or shaky landings here or there that distract from the overall impact of his performance. I'm always so disappointed for him when that happens. Given all his work on artistry, I've no doubt that if he more consistently skated on par with his wonderful technical abilities he would start to be viewed differently and receive higher overall scores, and would then be up there in the conversation w the current international medal contenders.

LOL, I had him on top. Then ice coveage wondered why Adam wasn't on top since he had the two better placements.

And I'm not counting 2014 cause that's part of the previous Olympic cycle. For this exercise its placements in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Man you all are hard to please!

I admire Max for trying to work on the artistry. But I think it's really challenging to not let the wild goose chase of pursuing a weakness affect your strengths. Jason is truly in the reverse situation to Max, but has been able to do relatively well internationally cause he works on what he needs to do technically (and generally does enough most days for solid national placements/GP medals) while maintaining what he's good at.

At one time Jason had been the charming rising junior challenging the veterans. One time people wanted off with Jeremy's head so Jason, Josh and et al could come in. I never said such things cause I knew that one day they would all be in the off-with-their heads position. (Well Josh isn't really....but Jason, definitely. :P)

You almost got it right. It will be Nathan and Max.

If USA earn a third spot, that will go to either Vincent or Andrew or Josh. Unless USFSA stupidly screws the bronze medalist out of the spot in favor of the sixth-place finisher or something.

Mrs P, couldn't you tell I was only being intentionally aggravating?

I was just funnin' you.

I know. Did you not see all the LOLs and laughing emoticons.

Golly, I can't wait to look back on these predictions come Jan. 8, 2018 (hopefully while in the arena in San Jose!).

I'm not gambling. So no predictions or wishlists from me.

Nonsense. You have to join the fun!

We're all babbling about who will outskate the others a full year in advance. Surely you're willing to provide your expert opinion?

If you don't, I'm going to tell everyone you DM'd me your predictions and post them with "your" insulting comments about the non-medalists.

What expert opinion? I'm terrible at predicting these things.

Prediction: Nathan and two other U.S. men (one other U.S. man). (j/k)

I'd say -- Max, Vincent, Jason, Adam. Pick two (or one)

Dark horses: Andrew T. Grant. Ross

We're only one off. Close enough. My picks are just my favorites. I need Max and Nathan, I love me some quad kids. And Josh is just too adorable and amazing, and his comeback has made me so happy.

Plus I need Nathan there for mor Raf gifs, Raf is entertaining.

Max will get it together next year, I believe!!!!

I seem to have a tendency to like some of the most inconsistent skaters. I think last Season Max overall did very well, I think this season was more of a side effect of balancing everything he is doing with school, keeping up his tech and working on his PCS. He really could make that olympic team with more consistency.

I just really wanted a clean Lion King performance from him, I may be one of like 5 people on this planet who actually loved that he did the Lion King.

It's just a dream team of my 3 favorites. I want them all there so bady.

I very much like Adam. He has risen to "Five Tollers" with the Beatles at Worlds and (my very favorite Adam program, and no one agrees with me:() Liszt at Finlandia in 2014. I loooved the Liszt program. Not as many five Tollers as Jason, but who does?

I *really* can't get into the Broken Bird, and I'm afraid he'll keep it for next year. That would be a bummer. But heaven knows, it beats that godawful monstrosity of "music" for his LP he began the season with. He does learn!:agree:

I agree with you! That one is my fave Adam programme, too, and that was my favourite performance. I was there and gave him a standing ovation :D

Well, maybe if we cross our fingers, he will get to go to WTT, and we will see that clean Lion King  I believe!

I can't sleep, it's not Thursday anymore, but thought it would be fun to see all the junior U.S. champs that will be vying for a Olympic spot next season.

#tbt:

These are all their free skates from that year.
2017: Alexei Krasnozhon
2016: Tomoki Hiwatashi (this is from Jr. Worlds)
2015: Andrew Torgashev
2014: Nathan Chen
2013: Vincent Zhou (Casablanca is clearly a good-luck program for him.)
2012: Nathan Chen (fan cam)
2011: Max Aaron (from JGPF couldn't find his nationals performance)
2010: Jason Brown (also Joshua Farris, who was second, but won the free skate)
