blech. CBC showed 4CC and the commentary by Kurt and David Pelletier was meh. I don't think they knew what happened in the sp or what was actually planned in the programs.
Kurt mistakenly thought Yuzu had 5 quads planned. They were critical of Patrick, Yuzu, and Nathan, but were the most positive towards Shoma. Kurt seems to really like Shoma. They felt here that he had quads in his program, as opposed to it being a quad program and that he really filled the rink despite his small stature. For Patrick it was many little things, ie. sameness in his music choices. They said it is hard to tell where Patrick stacks up because we haven't seen his program done cleanly against the top guys and he has to stop making errors on the easy 3 jumps. David said his skating is still the international standard for men, though. For Yuzu it was that this program didn't grab emotionally and something had to give in order to get all the quads done, so in this case it was performance. David said he was able to do quads at the 4 minute mark of his program he was so well trained and then Kurt pointed out he had asthma and then David was even more impressed. They wondered if he was so jubilant in the KNC because he thought he'd won. For Nathan, they said he will only get better because Kurt thought his movements were because felt the music, rather than some choreo telling him to do something. He also said he thought Nathan could only do a 3A because he rotates fast, and that he hasn't really learned how to do it. They praised Nathan for his ability to compete so well at his age, and of course these younger guys can do these quads because they grew up knowing they had to do them. David acknowledged all the usual criticisms towards him, but said that it still did not take away from his enjoyment. He was emotionally involved anyway, for a different reason.
Closing thoughts included Patrick having to go home and focus on what he could do well as opposed to trying to catch up to what the other guys are doing. For Yuzu it was to go home and figure out what to do next (or something like how to beat Nathan), I can't remember. David said that it was important for the other guys to not let Nathan run away with the short program because it has 4L and 4F in it etc., blah, blah. They said 3 jumps are kind of filler jumps now.
I was kind of disappointed in their commentary, but in a way it was fair too. They figured 5 quads might be the new normal and that performances/programs are currently suffering as a result, but that in a couple of years it will even out when the top guys figure out how to include everything again without making sacrifices.
