Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

blech. CBC showed 4CC and the commentary by Kurt and David Pelletier was meh. I don't think they knew what happened in the sp or what was actually planned in the programs.

Kurt mistakenly thought Yuzu had 5 quads planned. They were critical of Patrick, Yuzu, and Nathan, but were the most positive towards Shoma. Kurt seems to really like Shoma. They felt here that he had quads in his program, as opposed to it being a quad program and that he really filled the rink despite his small stature. For Patrick it was many little things, ie. sameness in his music choices. They said it is hard to tell where Patrick stacks up because we haven't seen his program done cleanly against the top guys and he has to stop making errors on the easy 3 jumps. David said his skating is still the international standard for men, though. For Yuzu it was that this program didn't grab emotionally and something had to give in order to get all the quads done, so in this case it was performance. David said he was able to do quads at the 4 minute mark of his program he was so well trained and then Kurt pointed out he had asthma and then David was even more impressed. They wondered if he was so jubilant in the KNC because he thought he'd won. For Nathan, they said he will only get better because Kurt thought his movements were because felt the music, rather than some choreo telling him to do something. He also said he thought Nathan could only do a 3A because he rotates fast, and that he hasn't really learned how to do it. They praised Nathan for his ability to compete so well at his age, and of course these younger guys can do these quads because they grew up knowing they had to do them. David acknowledged all the usual criticisms towards him, but said that it still did not take away from his enjoyment. He was emotionally involved anyway, for a different reason.

Closing thoughts included Patrick having to go home and focus on what he could do well as opposed to trying to catch up to what the other guys are doing. For Yuzu it was to go home and figure out what to do next (or something like how to beat Nathan), I can't remember. David said that it was important for the other guys to not let Nathan run away with the short program because it has 4L and 4F in it etc., blah, blah. They said 3 jumps are kind of filler jumps now.

I was kind of disappointed in their commentary, but in a way it was fair too. They figured 5 quads might be the new normal and that performances/programs are currently suffering as a result, but that in a couple of years it will even out when the top guys figure out how to include everything again without making sacrifices.

Edit to add: they were saying many positive things about everyone too. It wasn't like someone had peed in their cornflakes or anything, they just weren't gushing over everything.

Thank you so much!

And to think I was looking forward to this. To be blunt, as commentators, they should know what the planned program is; various eurosport and NBC peeps did. Then it changes the whole perspective of the skate. Including that conclusion. Sigh.

Wow I'm disappointed...and to think that I was looking forwards to Kurt's commentary :slink:

I mean seriously did they not even hear what Yuzuru was saying in the KnC and explaining to Brian and how did David not know Yuzu had asthma- isn't it a well known fact? In fact on the NHS (national health service) site on the page about asthma there's a sentence saying how asthma won't limit your child to sports because Olympic gold medalist in figure skating Yuzuru Hanyu also has it

Guess I'll stick to watching NBC and Eurosport

Edit: now my annoyance seems to have subsided I feel pretty chill about it- I guess David didn't really do much wrong and although I'm not fond of Kurt's attitude towards Yuzuru's program (this one is my favourite LP out of all of his except maybe POTO, that Ina Bauer was life) I guess it's not that bad. Tbh CBC has been one of my favourite commentaries so I'll let it slide

David has been pre-occupied with hockey training (he is coaching a hockey team now) so I can understand he doesn't follow the sport closely. But I am surprised that Kurt didn't know their layouts before competition at all. And they didn't seem to watch the SP either. Don't tell me they will just act like that for WC?

male commentator (Kurt?): Well if it was competition he already has a one point deduction

(irritated) female commentator (Tracy?) : We don't judge what their doing out on the ice, we judge costumes during the gala.

Edit: Oh it's Andi Petrillo! Thanks!

I highly doubt they will be like this at World's. I think because it was a week later, they weren't as involved in it, so it was kind of toned down. And I noticed this in their commentary in the other disciplines as well. I also find that when it's David sitting with Kurt, the commentary is much different than when Carol Lane is there. I much prefer Carol to David.

I was surprised about Kurt not knowing the layout either, but to be fair, they don't rewatch the programs over and over like we do, right? Kurt is obviously a very busy man. When Kurt mentioned the number of quads he said it was hard to know, but he *thought* there were 5 planned. He said there used to be a time when the 2 triple A's were the first 2 elements and now Yuzu is "doing the 3A as the second last element." Obviously he knew what happened, this wasn't live commentary, but we as big fans would know why that's a big deal because we're following everything. I am sure if he was at the competition watching the practices, it would be much different.

That's Andi Petrillo commentating about the costume. She's part of the CBC announcing team.

And, I forget who said it, but don't just stick to NBC and Eurosport. Kurt is usually quite fair and knows what he is talking about when he is commentating. He was saying many good things about everyone as well, including how easy everything looks when Yuzu does them etc.. This was just a kind of phoned in thing today. I find it much easier to listen to this then Johnny and Tara....although the British Eurosport guys are great !

It was not the first time for Kurt to misremember Yuzu's layout. Check 2014 GPF LP, he said Yuzu was going to do a 3A when it was actually a 3F, PLANNED AND EXECUTED.

And, I have a feeling he just doesn't like the program as much as Seimei because he said Yuzu was a great skater, but in this program he (kurt) wasn't as emotionally involved as he was watching last year's long program.
I have noticed Western commentators don't like Yuzuru's LP much this season. On the other hands, Chinese and Japanese prefer it. As a result his PCS isn't big despite having harder programs.
Some people say Yuzuru should keep his LP for next season cause Olympic will be in Asia anyway. But most judges will be Westerners so I think he should change to a warhorse if he wants general appeal. Programs for Olympic should be some safe choice.
I have no doubt he will have a new SP. But will he have a new LP I wonder. In my opinion he should. But I am not him.
But again, skating to the same LP next season might result in better consistency. And in this sport we know that consistency brings PCS anyway.

I wonder it could be the other way around. He never kept his lp since senior and I am also afraid it might not be favoured by judges neither if keeping the long.

I can't tell about his LP. But hopefully he will change it. Western commentators don't like his LP this season, and it seems the judges as well. It's too subtle and gentle for their taste. I guess they kind of expected Yuzuru to do dramatic programs.
His SP is well-liked I think. But he won't keep it. I guess he will skate to something similar in SP next season.

I have noticed how his PCS isn't big despite the harder programs as well, and I think it also a direct result of this program not being as liked by the judges as Seimei. I have wondered about it all season. You could say he hasn't performed it as well yet, but I still think there is a little less love sprinkled on it by the judges. I really hope he does not keep it for next season. I think it works well as a contrast to what he did with Seimei, but it does not say Olympic Champion program to me. I don't think he'll keep LGC either. I hope he maxes both out in Helsinki and we can see new programs next eyar.

My general preference of commentators these days are the Chinese ones. They don't talk over the music; they simply describe each element done in real time and are very precise about it (type, different variations/entries, and even what level). Then they make a few comments about their overall thoughts after the program is finished, and nothing nasty.
:points:

Well, if I could understand Chinese that might be ok, lol.

edit: I guess I should have said Mandarin or Cantonese, or whatever they use...whoops.

:p My Mandarin is iffy these days so its a double plus that listening to it more frequently helps me with understanding it better. :handw:

Frankly I am not a big fan of LGC so I am more than thrilled to see a new sp. In terms of H&L, I personally fell in love with it in at first sight and would wish judges coulf be a little bit more appreciating to it, but since we are in the figure skating world: fast food edition, I have no problem with warhorse for next season tho I want him and I bet he will skate to some music touching his heart indeed.
