2017 World Ladies SP

Tech panel is either totally blind or extremely pro-USA because neither Wagner nor Chen got any URs here. One could think these championships are skated in US again. Most laughable tech panel I have seen for a while. They are really pushing for three spots for US for next season.

Wagner's EXTREMELY clear URs.

Chen's clear UR.

As you are "The Finn" maybe you could tell us: Did the US buy Finland? That was the only explanation offered by an esteemed poster as to why the judges or technical panel would favour the Americans.

That 3L is perfect. The transitions leading into it and out of it are exceedingly difficult. Few men do 3L's as tough as that, and no ladies (except maybe some of the younger Russian girls) can even begin to attempt a 3L like that.
This really is the best part of Evgenia's SP. Stunning. She has another moment like that in her FS with the 3S.

Trump didn't get the Trumpcare bill through because he was too busy making deals to buy Finland for figure skating reasons.

Some final random thoughts about the Ladies short program:
- I became delirious around the time I heard that pop click Cicero of Nicole Schott's.
- At around 5:00am Chicago time, I had a very dark moment watching Laurine Lecavelier fall. I felt like this is the most important moment of her career. Maybe that's overstating things, but she had a lot of momentum coming in and she is working with (in my opinion) one of the best short programs ever created. Her combo jump has been so divine. To see her take such a nasty fall and wind up 22nd. Wow. She still skated her guts out after the fall, and I admire her so much for that. But it's really such a shame that she didn't skate to her potential. She has so very much, and I firmly believe she could have landed in the top 10 if she had gone clean.
- Zijun Li was robbed. What is there to say about it? She was boss today. F*** THAT SCORE. She and Laurine are skating 1st and 2nd on Friday in the First Group... what a world, what a worlds...
- Ivett Toth - genius. Brilliant and funny kid; so full of potential and so charming. It was so redeeming to see her nail that!
- Angelina Kuchvalska is back. It wasn't perfect, but I just felt that she is back. It's been such a disappointing year for her, but she is going to find her groove again. I feel relatively certain about that. I wish her great luck in the Free Skate. Nobody knows how to shake things up with a totally clean Free Skate than Kuchvalska (except maybe Zijun Li).
- Tursynbaeva is bae. Her mom is 100% living. That was magic. Good job, bae!!!
- I do not trust anyone who would say a bad word against Wakaba Higuchi. Sorry, not sorry.
- Shuran Yu should have qualified over pop click cicero. Also, can someone please tell me was Shuran's dress really so low cut or was in a 3:30am delirium?
- Kaetlyn Osmond knocked everyone's d*mned socks off. Goodness gracious, me. That was a joy to watch.
- Maria Sotskova's music gave me everything I needed to live this morning, and I officially really like her now.
- I am always rooting for the underdogs, so the last group is just icing for me. They are all incredible. The field is so deep with talent this year. And to think that Radionova and Miyahara aren't even there!

Ashley finished RIGHT before class started for me. So I had to wait 1 hour and 15 minutes before I could see the final scores...and BOTH CANADIAN LADIES IN THE TOP 3!!!! WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THAT HAPPENED?!

I was freaking out when I saw the results.

Maybe this panel wants to call the Olympics. I bet the ISU would prefer lenient callers to someone like Shin Amano at the biggest event for the sport where tons of casual viewers and non-technique people are paying attention and commenting.

As much as I adore Elena, this wasn't the competition where she would've shone. This was the competition of big jumps. So I doubt she would've placed better than Sotskova.

Can we go back to talking about Ivett Toth yet? I'd like to see her move up in the FreeSkate and counter all the negative Ju Ju that Im from getting from Zijun Li's scores.

Well, when you have two junior-ish ladies who are under a lot of pressure and an injured gal who tends to be undermarked, what can you expect? It's a real shame about the injuries of Rika and Satoko this season, really bad timing (I mean there's never a good time to get injured, but still... bad timing) :(

I get what you mean with "bad timing". Injuries ARE always bad, but when it matters for Olympic qualification, they seem even worse because even if a skater will recover by next season/the Olympics, they're now fighting for less spots.

Similar issue in gymnastics this past summer. Larisa Iordache of Romania, one of their best gymnasts, broke a finger (much more damaging in gymnastics than FS due to hand usage requirements) in March 2016, and had to miss the Rio Test Event (final qualification event for gymnastics, like Nebelhorn is for skating next season). Romania was already struggling since they hadn't qualified a full team at the previous Worlds, and without Larisa's scores, they were unable to qualify a team to Rio.

I vastly prefer Kaetlyn's program to Zhenia but that's just my personal preference. My last girlfriend urged me to unfriend Kaetlyn on Instsgram because she was too pretty and too high on my previous searches so maybe I'm a bit sweet on Kaetlyn too

I see she was your last girlfriend. Kaetlyn 1, girlfriend 0?

Score and Protocols thoughts:

Evgenia - scores too high, I really dont see anything worth a 9 in components. At most I would give mid-8s. Technicals all well done.

Zijun - TOOOOO LOW. WHAT THE HELL ARE THE JUDGES THINKING????? She deserves at least mid 7s on her PCS!!! Jesus...

Medvedeva were doing the most with her blades and her body, comparing with other skaters. It's quantity which judges awarded there. Even she looks enjoyable for watching, Zijun was too static, in terms that she moves only her arms, and in some part of her program she running with skates instead of skating. She lacks quantity in PCS and skating with harder movements. Its like doing triple lutz comparing to triple toe, both jumps can look good, but they are not awarded the same.

It's really her best jump, IMO. It even has pretty good height, and doesn't look muscled at all (which some of her jumps do).

I didn't think any of her jumps looked muscled today.

Her 3+3 was also spectacular with the tano followed by the Rippon (lol, she's been watching Zagitova). Both her and Osmond deserved +3 on their combo, albeit for different reasons. Her 2A lacked height, as usual, but it still felt light and it's as well as she can perform it.

Med's jumps looked so effortless today. I would have given them a +3, +3, and a +1. Osmond's I would have given a +3, +2, and a +2.

Yes I want to keep talking about her. I love her Free Program as well! She is so d*mn cool.

Can someone speak to how Evgenia looked live? (Or link fancams?) I'm curious as to how her speed/ice coverage looks.

Was she? because i did notice that she has watered down the choreography quite a bit: no more illusion at the beginning of the program, less transitions on the solo jump (that's required) and the 2a, no split jump at the end of the program,...

I do agree with the judges that her teammate Xiangning was better here. (though to me she deserved at least a 60)

So I guess the big question for U.S. fans is, can Ashley finish high enough to help Karen out in the race for three spots?

Next question: How did Canadian ladies get so good so quick? :)

There should be rule where the home country for the olympics gets automatically 3 spots. Just like football where they automatically qualify.
It could be a thing if the judges weren't so subjective sometimes, or if the federations weren't so annoying.

This is not really a great idea given the already limited spots. That would be 10% of the available spots just for hosting, which is a bit much. A single host spot is really sufficient enough, but I do think it shouldn't be limited by spots remaining in the "Additional Athletes Quota" for Team Event countries needing to comprise a full team.

Gabrielle, I think Orser has a lot do with it. Kaetlyn was always pretty good, I remember 2013 she was hailed as the next biggest thing but then she got injured. I also think this SP is really, really helping her.

They were always good, they just never knew how to deliver when they needed to. Being healthy for an extended period of time goes a long way, when you're trying to build the competition consistency.
