2018 Olympic Figure Skating in the Morning

If you include Alaska, the US has five: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific and Alaska.

There is a 14-hour difference between Korean time and Eastern Standard time.
So if an Olympic program is shown at 10 am in Korea:

It would be seen at 8pm in NY and 4 pm in Anchorage
10 pm in Newfoundland and 5 pm in British Columbia.

OMG, so it is totally unfair, who would watch figure skating at 4pm? . And of course it does not matter if basically all Latin America (20 countries) could benefit of this time.

I was just there, so I'll thrown in that Hawaii also has a different time zone. -3 hours from Pacific and -2 from Alaskan.

For all Asian competitions, most events are in the wee hours of the morning, which means live watching is nearly impossible.

As for events being in North America, you can count on the fingers of one hand the number of events in NA in any given year. OTOH, the number of events in Asia might require the use of the digits on both hands and maybe even one foot....

And the events in Europe---you'd need an abacus....

What about Boston, London etc.? We in Europe also get up in the middle of the night if Figure Skating is in North America. If Olympics were in NA I could understand, but actually having the competitions in the morning in South Korea? It just seems rude.....(And for Japan, Russia etc. who have real gold medal contenders, it's not an ideal time to watch either)

I was under the impression that USA was the country that pushed the time change to morning, and not Canada.

oh i mentioned North America.. because if the time change is good for New York, (all the coast even Florida) Detroit and Boston for instance, it's also good for Montreal and Toronto... right there you have a lot of larger cities or cities with big skating traditions....

And honestly, the USA, can challenge in Men as well... lots can happen in a year... a year before Sochi, Patrick was largely the favourite... by GPF it was perhaps 50-50... so there you go... Right now, it may look like D/R are out of it, but they could also come back and win it all... and we could go on...

Me too. It will be 3 AM here, I already missed quite a lot when it was in Vancouver, but I was waaay younger and there was school, so I hoped that 2018 would make it up for it... This is annoying as hell. If it was at 6pm, it would be 11am here. PERFECTION.
2013-2016 WC : Canada, Japan, China, Boston. We got lucky this year because the last 4 years were exhausting for European FS fans.

This might be true, but the Olympics are in South Korea and not North America. The "Rest of the World" just has to live with it, because the USA wants their prime time quota? Because whatever happens in the World, the USA is the most important? It's that kind of attitude that keeps on damaging the image of the USA. It's bullying. Plain and simple.

i don't deny this. i was surprised to read about the morning figure skating.. it will be interesting for the athletes.

but the olympics are about tv rights and the one time every 4 year americans (casual fans) watch figure skating is at the olympics.. so i think the ISU is thinking that by scheduling the events like this, Asia, a large and still growing market, as well as America will see it primetime...

did they sacrifice Europe? Yes they did.... but in these cases, you cannot please everyone.

Swimming at Rio was so late... exactly because they wanted the west coast of the USA to get it in prime time

i was in vancouver.. i got NO tickets for figure skating.. I TRIED so hard... but nothing.. (it was a lottery draw) i was very upset... events were non-stop... all day long... and i watched all the time for two weeks... from the morning until the night...


So, of course, people work and what not but many people will still watch live in korea

I agree, its so annoying in my opinion. I live in Asia and I thought that I would never have to deal with time differences at the 2018 games and can enjoy it during the prime-time but guess I'll probably be in school at that time and have to give it a miss again...

As always, money talks. NBC pays the most money and they get what they want. Incredibly insufferable, but nothing new... unfortunately.
