Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

Yup, sounds like he wants to try it all... in his head he hears what Brian is saying and understands it... but the other part of him is like, yes, let's try this! I know I can do it!! He has to strike the right balance and prevent any injuries. He already had to deal with that this past season, so to do it again would be less than ideal, although doable.

I like that Brian was right about Yuzuru at World's when he made him take it easy the day before the long program. Yuzu is all about working harder and practicing, but there is also a time when you've done the work and it's about rest. That bit of wisdom was imparted to Yuzu and it worked out for the best. It's like a student cramming before a test after studying for days already.. you already know the stuff, so just relax and go in and do it. Brian does know his students and does know a thing or two about what he's doing!!!

Does anyone know what is being talked about here? https://vimeo.com/192273788 It is the ita esp guys and they seem to be mentioning Hanyu during Han Yan's skate? Just wanted to see if there is a translation buried somewhere here in the fan fest.

Not sure about a translation elsewhere but what I could grasp from the video is that the music reminds them of Yuzu's performance from 2012 Worlds. Then they were talking technical about the 3A and how it's worth almost as much as a quad if you put it in the 2nd half and get +GOE, and apparently Yuzu had said something similar, that he considered his 2 3As in R+J1 like 2 extra quads (according to Max at least).

The “victory menu” of Yuzuru Hanyu, who recaptured his title as world figure skating champion, is revealed. Hanyu received conditioning and nutrition support from Ajinomoto’s “Victory Project,” increasing both food intake and muscle mass.
Sorry if I sound offensive to some people but this article is very probably paid by Ajinomoto for PR. Many Asian households have used their products (including my family) and there's nothing special about them at all except the fact they're easy to find.

video + based on what i can see in the photo:

main points to the menu is (1) simmered foods/stews that are easy to digest (2) pork + soybeans to increase metabolism (3) cutting out fat

IIRC, he said that his favorite food was nabe, because he felt like his body was being properly nourished by it, so he likes stews.
(Although there is a video where he is eating tamago kake gohan and he mentions how happy he feels when he eats it hahahaha)
they also seek to sculpt the “Gold Body
Well... They are right in more than one way...

probably. just a little fluff ^_^||| it is still, after all, what he is eating

Hahaha well, PnG days is pretty much ad too but always a pleasure to know he is using Downy and Febreeze  (anad whatever dishwashing liquid/laundry detergent he was using)

What's next? Pantene?

I wouldn't mind a rant....:slink:

I will indulge myself in a small one as "balletic" is being thrown around this forum as incorrectly as GOE and PCS to undeserving skaters. :angry2:

In a nutshell, ballet has a very well-defined and distinct dance vocabulary. There is a proper way to stand (back straight, elongation of the spine from the top of the head to the tailbone, neck long, shoulders down and relaxed). There is a proper way to position the feet. There is a proper way to move and position the arms (port de bras). There is even a proper way to move your head and angle your shoulders and torso (epaulement). All positions, steps and elements such as turns and jumps are also well-defined. Hence, something that is "balletic" should be a good approximation of ballet as defined by its vocabulary and should be easily identifiable to someone who knows ballet. When Nathan does temps leve sur le cou de pied, pas de bourre, temps leve sur le cou de pied in his Le Corsaire SP, I can see it. Or when Yuzu does his 3F entrance and exit, I can see it as chaine arms in 4th into a 3F landing plie arabesque into a pirouette arms in 5th and a plie arabesque out.

I can tell you now, of the top skaters, there is no one I can call "balletic". Nobody has constantly proper ballet posture with a straight back, long neck and low shoulders, not even Patrick. Most evidently, Patrick, Javi, Shoma and Boyang do not have ballet arms at all. Nathan is the closest but only in his port de bras as he needs to work on his lower body and the way he moves his lower body does also affect his posture.

On Yuzu, it's true I wouldn't call him balletic generally but there are moments where he really is and he does it so beautifully I just have to replay. On his upper body, he doesn't always use balletic movements and carriage but when he does, he has excellent 2nd, 4th and 5th positions in the arms and moves between these with proper low shoulders, soft elbows and (as someone mentioned before) beautiful Russian fingers. On his feet, he has amazing turnout so his spread eagle really looks like ballet 2nd position, his Besti squat looks like grand plie in 2nd and his Ina Bauer looks like a cambre backward in a lunge with feet in 4th open position. His soft knees and deep edges remind me of a ballet dancer with fluidity in plie and groundedness in the feet. So ironically for such people throwing around the word "balletic", if I absolutely had to rank the top skaters, I would say Nathan for his proper port de bras then Yuzu because he has so many moments I would call "balletic" while I cannot say the same for others.

I love the shamisen idea because I love Change. I wonder if he'd do an EX with that... Doing it as a competitive program would be too risky, but why not an EX? :luv17:

That would probably be better so he can focus on the choreography and not worry about jumps :agree2:

I think he already talked about pantene :o :o but i want wet-haired yuzu if he's doing that >:D

I think people start referring to male skaters as balletic because of Curry (and it helped he skated to don quixote maybe lol)? Just out of curiosity, do you think he is balletic? I take few basic ballet lesson to support my ballroom but to be honest with skates is it really possible to be "true" balletic?

I think he already talked about pantene :o :o but i want wet-haired yuzu if he's doing that >:D

yeah he did last year. But what else could be left? SKII? I don't think Yuzuru would promote gillette :p

That was me haha, it was one of the first things my dance teacher praised about him. She said that Yuzu's lines are what every ballet teacher aims for, that she was in awe at how she could see the lines forming while he skated :)
There was also this comment :)
I've learnt to not pay attention to everyone who says that Yuzuru isn't "balletic", like you said, he has his (gorgeous) moments. And i agree with my teacher: Ballet has so many things that have to be done the "proper" way, that i think we wouldn't have the same Yuzu we have now if he skated following the rules of ballet. I like how emotional he is, and ballet feels a bit more unflexible for the kind of interpretation that Yuzu does.

I think people start referring to male skaters as balletic because of Curry (and it helped he skated to don quixote maybe lol)? Just out of curiosity, do you think he is balletic? According to my dance teacher who has skated, she says she found it almost impossible lol, especially something that people bring up every now and then: Pointing the toes inside the boot!

I think he already talked about pantene :o :o but i want wet-haired yuzu if he's doing that >:D
Can't he talk about what he uses to wash himself... For science

Two interesting articles from NBCOlympics (USA station)

Where Are They Now - Sochi Champions

Interview with Brian Orser
Brian Orser"s Week At Worlds with Skaters Yuzuru Hanyu and Javier Fernandez

This part was particularly interesting:
I knew he was disappointed after the short so we needed to just let him be disappointed for that night. Then we did our practice the next day and he was on a mission to prove something. I totally had to hold him back and say, “Just do one practice. Don’t do a run through. We’re just gonna treat this like a day of rest.” He was kind of like, “really?” And I said, “Yeah, just trust me on this. I want you fresh for tomorrow; you’re gonna be fine.”

This is exactly what my friend who is doing dance told me. And her profession is Chinese traditional dance. She said all those top men will be thrown out of a serious dance competition from round 1. :laugh2: Only Yuzuru and maybe Nathan (if his body doesn't change too much) can be considered as having acceptable body lines for dance. ;) she says Yuzuru's body is what most dancers prefer to have.

On Yuzu, it's true I wouldn't call him balletic generally but there are moments where he really is and he does it so beautifully I just have to replay.
My friend also says he is very natural and very musical, his moves and sense of rhythm is what she prefers.

And there's a Ballet choreographer (yes he's a professional) who saw Yuzuru at GPF 2015 became an Uber Yuzuru's fan. He replayed Yuzuru's performance and said something like "I have never seen anyone sensitive to every music note in such a natural way" :luv17:

I will never go out and call Yuzuru as "balletic". I am not a ballet fan at all, it looks so restrictive to me. But I am surrounded by ballet fans and even dance teachers. So it's annoying to see people on this forum or others throwing out that "balletic" comment so frequently. :roll9:

I mean, if these skaters were balletic then the ballet dancers my friends are adoring are... dancing gods from heaven? :laugh2:

k done.

It's actually interesting in that they mention he started tracking his condition beginning last October (body weight, fat free mass, body conditioning, training duration) and eating/training accordingly. They probably should have started doing that much earlier :p

But those dishes look pretty yummy :3 maybe I should make stew for myself too

as for what's left.... crest?

Lol okay so indeed he did not really have a serious dietitian/nutritionist before :p
But well as always better late than never ;)

Thank you as always gladi :ghug:

video + based on what i can see in the photo:

main points to the menu is (1) simmered foods/stews that are easy to digest (2) pork + soybeans to increase metabolism (3) cutting out fat

left hand column with the orange tabs are his lunches each day in helsinki, right hand column with blue tabs are dinners.

i'll edit the post and add translation of article. hold on.

----------------

The “victory menu” of Yuzuru Hanyu, who recaptured his title as world figure skating champion, is revealed. Hanyu received conditioning and nutrition support from Ajinomoto’s “Victory Project,” increasing both food intake and muscle mass. He was able to complete his difficult, 4-quad program as a result. Looking ahead to Pyeongchang Olympics, they also seek to sculpt the “Gold Body(:laugh2::rofl2: SORRY. LOL) where Hanyu will seek to defend his title, a feat never accomplished by anyone else in the past 66 years.

[flowery prose, skip]

“We want to create a body that is less susceptible to damage. If nutrients aren’t completely absorbed, the physical burden from training will directly hit his internal organs. And we think it’s necessary to cover that from the nutritional/ food-intake side"

Although Hanyu lost stamina in the final stage at Autumn Classic, the first competition of the season, with each competition he increased the level of completion. Hanyu, who had a small appetite, became more conscious of eating well in order to train well.

After 4CC, he skated (trained) a considerable amount. His body had become one that can handle the amount of training. Compared to before, his rear muscles have visibly buffed up (this is for you hydro). Calories consumed at WC have also been markedly increased from 4CC. Metabolism has improved, and a strong body that could sustain a high level program skated with high precision is created. (ad ad ad ^_^)

In October last year, he began to do “conditioning checks” that include tracking of body weight (reminds me of that recent interview where he said he only recently started to weigh himself, lol), fat free mass, body conditioning, and training duration (so I guess 14 hours/week on ISU is honestly just whatever?). At Skate Canada in the same month, he felt strained landing four quads and there was the impression that maintaining stamina for second half would be hard without enough muscles. He worked hard to increase his food intake at meals and supplements in order to try and gain more muscles.

[blah blah blah about the victory menu ^_^|| Mainly: (1) simmered foods/stews that are easy to digest (2) pork + soybeans to increase metabolism (3) cutting out fat. Trying to strike balance between weight increase and stamina]

rear muscles rear muscles rear muscles rear muscles

Take stroll through the UA folder of my collection, you can see that, indeed, he has gained muscle!
Thanks for the translation, as always <3 i started reading the article but gave up in the middle because i'm at work lol
And thank you for the shout out lol:laugh2:

I think we have all carefully examined where he has gained muscle... hehe.
