Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

thanks for your post. I'm always fascinated when I see fans that've known about the sport for years. It's very interesting to read how the sport changes and has better things but also lacking stuff.

Off topic but reading about Mao's retirement, who I love too, just makes me think how I'll feel when Yuzuru retires. I can't imagine the feelings that one must go through when the reason you became a fan of the sport retires. I don't think the level of investment is the same after that, fortunately many people find a new skater to love and follow but I can't imagine myself getting so invested in another skater or in general in another athlete like this :sad21:. Things like this remind me that we have to enjoy every second we can watch our favorite skater

Oh yes, we have to enjoy every second: I honestly don´t think there is anyone like him or will ever be...perhaps I am proven wrong in future, but at this moment, this is my opinion..

Some might be really strict and having really high standard, while others might be more lenient; as long as they are consistent, it should not be a problem, in my opinion.

It is the same with PCS. Some judges prefer .., others prefer ...

If only it would be really what judges think and not what their federation wants to see in protocols

Oh, I was a kid when compulsories were still on - but I watched the sport ever since I was a toddler, my mum loved it and she loved Rodnina/Zaitsev. By the 1980s I was old enough to understand what was going on - only just. Ah, sweet memories...
And I had an opportunity to go to the Worlds in Moscow twice now - but both times I was sadly out of funds. I'd have seen Lambiel and Patrick win.
No, I mean I missed that shift from 6.0 to COP... though I could have followed the sport then.

Yes, Rodnina/Zaitsev! I remember! Especially him! I think I had a crush, but I also admired them sincerely.

I hope the people who plan to stop following after Yuzu retires will change their minds. There won't be another like him for many years, yet eventually it will be possible to fall in love again. I loved Johnny Weir, as infuriating as that was. It was different, because he wasn't the best or greatest ever, but you never know where your heart will lead. And now that I went to Helsinki, I feel more affection for many of the skaters, even ones I dismissed before. They work so hard, and have unique gifts.

I know how real the problems of money and time are, but I have to say again that you should try to see Yuzuru live. Make the sacrifice if you can, because you will always regret missing this shooting star light up the sky. Even if he isn't at this peak of performance, his simplest movements have a special aura. If you are his fan through the screen, there's no way you'll be dissatisfied with the real thing.

It's funny but when I watched FS during 6.0 it's always about the pairs. I watched singles during that time but not many people impressed me much. I preferred Yagudin and Kwan during their time but the memories are so blurred now.
I didn't remember the first time I started following Yuzuru. At first I thought he was a cocky and hot-blooded kid. I didn't expect to follow him up to this point.
We don't choose whom to love. It just happens.

Thank you raebia for sharing your experience with the old system! It's amazing to think about compulsory figures and how the sport really has changed! Generally I think it's changed for the better (especially now that we don't have anonymous judging) because at least now we can see how marks are rewarded, even if we disagree with those marks.

Well at the very least I do think Brian's mindset has shifted as he did admit that Yuzu was right. I think if Javi is clean with 5 total quads (SP and FS) he still has a chance for a medal, but it will depend on how well the rest of the field does. He is putting himself at their mercy, but how likely is it that we'll have a clean competition. He'll want redemption himself, but I guess with that comes the pressure since he wants a medal and doesn't have anything yet.

It will be interesting to see how the top 6 shake up because it will be the first Olympics for half of them and the other three are experienced veterans, we can only hope that they all inspire each other to have great performances so that the entire world can see the greatness of men's figure skating People have been saying it, but it is really like a golden era of men's figure skating with so many different styles and the extremely high technical standard.

After Sasha Cohen and Plushenko in 2006 Olys I took a step back from the sport. I'd been ubering them since 2001. After that I watched casually but I just didn't have the same passion for it. In 2010 I got slightly more invested because my all time fave pairs team Shen and Zhao were trying to get olympic gold again. After that I fell out of it again. And then in comes Yuzu and his PW program in late 2013. And by the 2015-2016 season I was full on uber mode. I still love skating, but I love it a lot more when I have some favorites.
