HAHAHAHA!! I screamed, for sure, but not the blood curdling kind. More like the "woohoo" type scream, like you'd do at a concert. But it was long and probably the highest pitch I was capable of at the time. I was briefly worried I may have screamed too loud
; thankfully the replays assuaged those concerns since everybody lost their collective s***

I confess, I am 54 years old, and grew up watching fs with my mother in the 1970´s. In german, compulsory figures were called "duty", and the free programme was called "free". Ok.
So I watched it all on german television, even the "duty", which I found mostly boring, but sometimes fascinating. It was understood, then, in Germany, that whoever was not able to perform the correct "duty" was not a good figure skater.
Some skaters, pairs, etc, were able to infuse some artistry even into "duty", wow. It was, sometimes, strangely fascinating.
Later, I watched only sporadically, you know, live happend: work, relationships, death of familiy, less tv - time in Germany for fs..but sometimes I watched.
And then, by chance, I watched Yuzuru Hanyu Worlds 2012. I was: "What is this?" "Who is this?" "Intense!", "the best!". "What is going on in figure skating???" " I need to follow this skater".
So since then, I tried to understand there is no more "duty", but a short programme, which is everything as taxing and remanding as the free, and try to grasp goe, etc...And I went to Helsinki - because I had to see him once in my lifetime life, and am planning to go to Milan. Yes.
I remember the words of B. Orser, that his "pupils" have to learn the basics. And I think "duty" has not vanished, the skaters all have to know their basics, but we, the spectators are not forced any more to watch it on tv....thank God.
I love watching Yuzu stroking for example - but as a "must"? I fear, in former days, the "duty" killed much creative spirit.

I don't think I was ever this invested to an athlete as much as I did with Yuzuru, and I doubt I ever would be. To me, Yuzuru is the skater of my dream, the ultimate skater. I like many skaters once in a while, casually, but there is always something missing. But Yuzuru just strike me like a thunder and give me goosebumps that never happened before 
. Hopefully Yuzuru will go to Milan no matter what, seems like many of the members here are planning to go. And it is always a pleasure to have more and more Yuzuru. After Mao's retirement, I am reminded time and time again that every second we are able to enjoy him is such a blessing.

I always love hearing how people first got into this sport and how they first got into Yuzuru, especially for someone who has been watching this sport for so long
You are right, Orser made their students learn compulsory figures, which is why most of his skaters has outstanding/good skating skills. I am so happy that you get to see Yuzuru live! It must have been quite an experience. I am thinking to go to competitions, but probably only after olympics, regardless of whether Yuzu is competing or not (I actually think I would enjoy it more due to less stress hahaha)
