I wonder if I can pronounce it correctly. If I'm not thinking about it, I default to the incorrect North American way with long, stretched out vowels (Yoo-zoo-roo). As far as I can tell, Japanese vowels are shorter. Sometimes I can hear the announcer voice in my head but it comes out of my mouth wrong anyway. I have to congratulate all of you who speak multiple languages for coping with these challenges!

His name is pronounced LH HHH (L=Low tone H=high tone)? Idk if it's correct but I think it is Oo
It's nothing to be praised in my case, all vowels except u are the same in Japanese and Spanish :P the Japanese r gave me some trouble but not anymore

You can hear it here in the first few seconds - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x58jjgu_yuzuru-hanyu-fs-nhk-2016-sbs-aus-1_sport

Yeah the vowels made it easier (I studied Spanish first). You know, I couldn't roll my Rs for the life of me when I first started to learn Spanish. I would do a sort of growl to compensate . But eventually I got it. rr is a part of the alphabet after all. But the Japanese R's came pretty easy to me. Not sure if the years of anime exposure helped that or what. It's funny the different things language learners struggle with.

I started studying before watching subbed anime :P at the tender age of 9 😂 nowadays, I looked at the diagram of where you're supposed to articulate it and I'm doing it right :P (I have to admit it sometimes changes into an l for no apparent reason...)
On the other hand, I never struggled with English but I'm so out of conversation practice that my accent is noticeable now...

Watching more anime is a good answer! Reading about the Japanese pitch accent in different regions and syllables vs. mora wasn't helping so much. Guess I will kill time before WTT rewatching Yuri on Ice :scard8: And I can't believe I forgot but I haven't watched the new Shingeki no Kyojin eps :agree:

^I still have yet to watch either of those series, lol.

I'm still decent with my accent but my problem now is that because the vowels are the same, I actually find myself scanning my brain a little more to make sure I'm saying it in Spanish instead of Japanese, especially because I have been practicing my Japanese more. I can read and write in Spanish without this issue though. Even if I'm thinking in Spanish grammar while speaking, there may come a time when I want to use a Japanese word. "Doko" instead of "donde". It's so annoying.

Yuzu seems to like languages. He always learns a few phrases local to the country and then I was surprised to hear his brief little Russian convo with Kovtun (which seems forever ago now, haha). I'd love to hear him talk about some of his struggles.

oh nooo i'm now worried i pronounce his name wrong V_V

ETA: I confess I accidentally dropped my Japanese flag inside the arena at Worlds and my first thought was "Oh no Yuzu would kill me" as I quickly picked it up back.

Hmm... I think watching TV shows/drama is better because the Japanese in anime is way too dramatic haha. I got the pronunciation by singing a lot :D

Lol my Japanese notes are written in Japanese, Spanish and English 😂
In any day I think I use all three languages with the same frequency, so I'm used to switch quickly between any of them. The weird thing is that I seem to default at Japanese, someone might ask me a yes/no question and I would answer "hai" or "un" if I'm not paying attention haha.
I could analyze Yuzu's English acquisition forever and I would never be bored :P (I melted into a puddle of fangirl when I heard him speak Russian and Finnish)

I guess that's how he manages to stay a ninja kitten for ... well most of the year. Do TONS of CM's and campaigns in one go  I wonder how many P&G yuzu days he did in one go XD

He probably will do tons in between ice shows because hell yeah olympics and I bet all of his endorser really want to monetize on that.
Anyway, just random thought, I never thought nishikawa is a really big company hahaha. Their endorser beside Yuzu is Neymar (the football player), shohei otani (the baseball athlete) and that famous Japanese football player too, among their other endorsers. Speaking of which, this &Free CM by Yuzu has already reached 423 K views in 6 months lol wow.

I'm all for getting more Yuzu cms because that means we will get a lot of "making of" videos :D and i love how he talks in those

Both Lotte ghana and xylitol usually have a new CM each season, it is probably part of his contract obligation so we can expect at least that. Not sure about nishikawa and bathclin, since at the time Yuzu first signed with them, they don't have a CM with him and only use his images for promotional purposes, but I am guessing that is also because of Yuzu being busy. I assume they would want to shoot a new one too since the ones they shot were already from last year,. Also another PnG days series with all of their products. For ajinomoto, it has been ages since they shot a CM with him though he is still their endorser, so we'll see. While ANA... I don't think ANA would demand anything much from him but OP and presscon about his programs?

Phew that is quite a lot of PR/endorsement stuff to do, he'll be busy as heck. Stay healthy, Yuzu. :ghug:

I hope Xylitol doesn't come up with Yellow Ruffle 2.0 or something like that

This! Sometimes it is not just about the medals and results, but there is also that X factor that helps an athlete have better general public perception/following/popularity too. I'm not American, but I have this impression that Kwan and Cohen has much higher/bigger fanbase, popularity and public awareness compared to Tara Lipinski or Sarah Hughes (despite the latter two winning OGM and Kwan/Cohen did not). Another example like in Japan would be how Mao Asada, imo, is more popular than Shizuka Arakawa or Miki Ando, eventhough Arakawa won OGM and world title and Miki being a 2X WC. You can't really force the public to like/support someone, despite how many achievements/awards/titles/results they have. If they don't care they just won't care, though having titles/medals/results will help the public to care/be aware more.

In my opinion, Yuzuru has that X factor and likability about him that just make people want to root for him. It is not necessarily explainable or describable

I don't know what happened to my post responding to this.

I think popularity of a skater has to do with longevity (how long they compete in the senior circuit) and their results. Kwan and Cohen were around for multiple Olympic cycles and were repeat winners/medalists on the National and World stage. Even though, they didn't get the OGM, they at some point were good enough that they were considered real OGM contenders. Tara and Sarah were both around for only a couple of years in the competitive circuit before retiring after their respective OGM.

I can't speak for Arakawa, but Mao has been around for a long time with 3 World medals and multiple Japan titles. She's been popular since her Junior days and remained that way.

Yuzuru, had he retired immediately after his OGM, would not be nearly as popular as he is today. His story would have been similar to Sarah's where they're not really the front runner and won a surprise OGM (Tara actually was a front runner so I'll leave her out).

It also has to do with which athlete a nation's skating federation is pushing and who's story the media wants to cover. I remembered NBC tried to push Rachel Flatt's story during Vancouver and I (the American) thought, who are they kidding. She's not really a contender and frankly, don't have that X factor.

Some nice person put a dailymotion link with Yuzuru's parts of PJKwong's icetalk a few pages ago, but I can't seem to find it. Anyone knows which page it is/when it was posted?

(Also interesting that neither Yuzu nor Evgenia appear in the Shibs worlds vlog)

Zhenya did, she hugged Maia at the gala finale and blew a kiss at the camera. As for Yuzu, well we could see the back of his head when they were learning the choreography at the Gala practice
