Kanako Murakami | Page 39 | Golden Skate

Kanako Murakami

These two crying somehow just made me laugh. They are just adorable.

In fact, I think this time of the year is a perfect timing for retiring. Heading into the Olympics, skating events and TV shows will certainly increase, creating a lot more opportunities for retired skaters. I heard that Mao will go to Pyeongchang as TV reporter or hostess. That is a very nice way of participating in the grand event in my opinion.

The sad thing about being a rather new FS fan is that some skaters retire just when you were beginning to know them and love them :(
But that show is awesome and seem to be a wonderful way to begin a pro career :)
Good luck Kanako !

Nooo, Kana! I'm devastated. :sad4: The sunshine of Team Japan! Even though she's a few years younger than them, I always saw her as a member of the "golden era" generation with Mao, Akko, Miki, Dai, Nobu, Taka and all other skaters around that age range. They're all connected by a special bond reaching beyond their shared love for the sport. It is so sad to see her go as the last one of that bunch. She and her joyful spirit will be sorely missed on competitive ice. I'm not worried about her future - good things happen to lovely people. :) Thank you Kana-chan!!!

I've just heard of Hyoen. The Japanese are really not messing around when they make an ice show. Top notch production :jaw:.

Check out those photos of leading skaters in this show. They are just gorgeous! Glad to see Dai, Nobu, Shizuka, Akiko, Mai, and Kanako team up in such an event.

It's a fusion of figure skating and traditional Kabuki performing art with both Kabuki actors and figure skaters performing on the ice. It's going to be a hella lavish production incorporating projection mapping, wire fu, sword fights, live performances by "Drum Tao" and Vogue Japan is involved in the art direction. They're pulling out all stops! :cool14:

Kana joined the cast just recently, so she's not yet in the promotional video, but her character has been added to the official website.

I can't wait to see them all together in this!

We're avatar siblings now, synesthesia! Everyone looks good....Akiko plays Daisuke's lover! Great for an avatar, too....and Shizuka always gorgeous!

I live for Kanako and Nobu shenanigans...a match made in dork heaven, these two. Their relationship is special!

High five! ;)

It's also great to see a few lower profile skaters like Akio Sasaki being part of this. He's always been a talented on-ice actor and is gonna make a fantastic supporting character!

The definition of soul mates!

According to google translate, after retirement, Kanako will still study from Coach Yamada to become a coach herself. She hopes to become a coach that can take the athletes to the Olympics. Coach Yamada said Kanako is like her granddaughter.

Is that translation correct?

So glad that her post amateur life already seems filled with exciting projects. She always seemed so joyful and full of life... an infectious attitude to be sure! I wish her the best of luck in everything she does. One day it would be marvelous to see her coaching future stars.

Yes that's correct. Also she will be a professional skater.

I think Kanako could be an excellent coach. She seems to have to always have a calm and positive attitude and demeanor.

Good Luck to Kanako in the next stage in her life - she has so much to be proud of.

Murakami was badly affected by the rule change which came into effect a few seasons ago and she has been consistently downgraded for underlotation since then. No matter how hard she practised, she could not overcome the problem. The Japanese skaters from the Sochi generation mostly retired except for Hanyu, who is still evolving as a skater.

Thanks for the recap. ;)

Translation: Kanako MURAKAMI official retirement message (translated by yui on tumblr)

Today, I, Kanako Murakami, have decided to retire from figure skating after 19 years of competing.

Although it’s been 3 years since Sochi Olympics, I haven’t been able to leave the results I expected to leave and it made every day very hard on me. As for last season, I couldn’t get to the results I wanted no matter how much I practiced hard. Sometimes, I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing all this for. But I had a strong determination that I couldn’t end this the way it was and that’s what kept me going until now. Before last year’s nationals, I set my heart on doing a satisfying performance that could also be my last one. Since then, I thought a lot about what is a satisfying performance for me.

As a result, after speaking to my coaches, I felt the importance of skating in a way that would remain in the hearts of the people who came to watch, even if that required lowering the level of my jumping passes, which was a regretful decision as an athlete. Then, I concentrated on training while keeping in mind that objective.

After the competition, a lot of people congratulated me by telling me “It was great!!” and mostly, I saw my coaches being happy for the first time in a while and that filled my heart. Since then, it felt like a string that was under pressure let go. I thought “… let’s end here” from the bottom of my heart and I made the decision of retiring.

When I think about it, my skating career had a lot of ups and downs, and I caused a lot of trouble for the ones supporting me. I am very sorry about that. But all your rooting has been a big support for me, and moreover, my biggest motivation. I am so thankful, I don’t know how to express it in words. Thank you so much for all your support until now.

From now on, I want to be involved with figure skating in many other ways. I will work hard as an adult part of the society so people can support the new Kanako Murakami. Please take care of me from now on too.

Murakami Kanako

I like Coach Yamada's comment: '(Kanako) is like granddaughter. Although I worry spoiling her sometimes, she's been working hard.' And I can still remember the scene from 4CC-2014: after Kanako winning the gold, watching her and Coach Yamada walking out of the arena, hand-in-hand, just like grandma with the happy granddaughter.

I am shocked to learn of Kanako's retirement. Really, team Japan for Sochi Olympics was pure gold. I will miss her bright smile and positive energy on the ice.

On a side note, I noticed that Yuzu seemed kind of cold to her during the WTT gala. I wasn't expecting him to cry (like how Nobu reacted), but at least I was hoping he would hug her at least. They are childhood friends after all. Sorry for even mentioning it, but it just kind of bothers me a bit. :sad4:

Sorry, but there's no reason it should bother you. You only see what's shown on tv, not when the cameras are turned off. No doubt they had a moment to talk, at least. As you said, they're childhood friends, after all.

I also wouldn't worry about it. Kanako and Shoma are very close. You barely see them interact in the Gala either. It doesn't mean they suddenly dislike or have problems with one another.
